Have been collecting GBA games in the wild (i.e. not online) for years I've only seen Aria of Sorrow once and Harmony of Dissonance twice, got lucky I think. Double pack is definitely more common, also picked up that as insurance against losing one of the separate carts (my OCD kicking in...have two copies of DoS and PoR too)

BTW, if you think PoR is better than Super Metroid then you are sick and wrong :)

Those older Castlevania games might be hard to find because they had limited print runs. The double pack might be easier to find and cheaper than the two games seperate.

Don't get me wrong Retr0 Metroid games are great but I'm just totally loving this Castlevania game right now. Played for ages last night the longest gaming session I've had in a long time, really enjoyed it too it was good to just sit back and immerse myself in a game for once.

Great game, but I thought Dawn of Sorrow was better. If you like Portrait of Ruin you should run out right now and buy that too ;)

TBH I thought that POR was a step back from Dawn of Sorrow.(And I never really liked Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia either.)
Useless irish based fact , but both Aria of Sorrow on the GBA and Dawn of Sorrow both feature a sword called Claimh Solais.

Was just on fleece bay there and Aria of Sorrow & Harmony of Dissonance double pack is €40 and singularly they're €40 also god damn it looks like I'm gonna have to learn to solder and replace the battery in my GBA flash cart

If a GBA flash cart battery is anything like Snes cart batteries, you don't need to solder.

The battery is held in by a metal tab. All you have to do is separate the battery from that tab by breaking the solder. Sliding a hot knife between the tab and the battery works. In fact the knife doesn't even need to be hot. Just apply pressure slowly and it'll separate.

Then tape a new battery in for easy future replacement.

Well I had it apart before and it's kinda exactly the way you describe so I'm gonna give it a bash as soon as I can find my screw drivers

Playing Portrait of Ruin is now on the back burner cos the missus is addicted to Phantom hourglass and won't release the DS

You'll get it back when she gets well and truly sick of the temple of the ocean king.

Not retro but a retro series. I beat Thunderforce 6 last night. Not a bad shooter a few annoying things though. Graphically it's kind of crap, it looks like a bad DC game which is not good when it's main competition is Gradius V which is one of the best looking games of last generation. It's also really easy and Bosses don't last very long, which might be a thunderforce staple but it's annoying when you finish them off in about 30 seconds and they don't even get through their entire attack repetoire. There's some nice nods to the older games though.

She's already trying to confiscate my laptop aswell so she can scan gamefaqs as this is her first time playing any sort of Zelda game or any RPG for that matter

I don't like it when Zelda is called an RPG because it's definitely not one! She'd be even more lost if she played a real one :)

Well it's bad news on the Castlevania PoR front just played the Nation of fools level and the Sandy grave level and when I was fighting the boss it's a big brain thing that bodies fall out of when the game crashed out...Bugger gotta do it again. When I tried it again it still crashed so thats me pee'd off big time. Gonna abandon it till I get a working copy.
Trying Dawn of Sorrow now hope thats not messed up either as I don't wanna have to download the roms to play these beauties

Got Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles for PSP yesterday.

It's both retro and new, but all good.

Going to complete Rondo before playing SotN.

Skip them all and go straight to SOTN!

Bull****. SOTN is amazing but Rondo of Blood is just as good and I'd rank Castlevania 3, Super Castlevania 4 and Bloodlines up there as pre SOTN games that are just as good as it.

Rondo is awesome, why the hell would I want to skip it!

/backs away slowly from the rabbid Castlevania fans.

I didn't mean skip as in 'don't play', I mean't skip as in 'skip to'.

No other Castlevania game is as good as SOTN. Fact. I've never even played Rondo of Blood but can state this. You know why? Because if there was a game better than SOTN the earth would have collapsed in on itself around the late 90s. That didn't happen.

    Whats the Castlevania HD like?
    Is it a worthy purchase?
Isn't it a pain that it's download only, if it was on physical media there'd be the chance of another nice package of goodies like the SOTN set, booklet, soundtrack, you know.

Plus, with the Ico/SOTC HD pack on the way, how long will it be before we get a remastered Halo/Halo 2?
And Retro, you can cut that crap right out already!

Seriously you really need to play Rondo of Blood. Chopper isn't lying, it's as good as SOTN.

The download only castlevania is awful in single player but meant to be more fun the more players. No local multiplayer though. Looks like a total rehash or assets to me.

As for the Halo HD remakes, do we really need them? A remake of an average dated FPS with unacceptable backtracking and terrible second half and then it's terrible sequel. ICO and SotC are classics. Sly Raccoon games are underappreciated gems. The Halo is a bastion of mediocrity that console peasants seem to think is earth shattering.

    .

I'll certainly check it out. Didn't know that Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles not only includes that, but SOTN too? What a bargain.

Yep it does. It's a 3D remake but has SotN and the 2D original on there as well. The only stupid thing is they are secret unlockables so get on to gamefaqs and unlock them. The emulation for rondo isn't quite perfect but good enough for most people. If you are pedantic like me then the VC or emulated version is the one to go for. I think you'll like it o1s1n. It's not a metroidvania, more in style with the older castlevanias but it has multiple routes to beat the game like Castlevania 3 (seriously check out the japanese version of Vania 3, better music, it's amazing and the producer of SotN says it's his favourite game in the series) so there is plenty of replayability.

    Cheers for that!

I think it's quite possible I already had this on my PSP a while ago but didn't really bother with it as I didn't like the visuals. I'll put it back on my PSP when I get home and give it another go.

It's moronic to have those extras as unlockables. They should be plastered all over the box. More extras in a game, especially of this quality means more sales. The mind boggles.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,387 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Yeah it's kind of stupid especially having to unlock the original Rondo. I think it looks way better than the 3D update and has some of the best 2D art of the 16-bit generation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,106 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

You have to unlock both the original Rondo and SotN, but I will happily play through all of Rondo to do that and then get stuck in to SotN.

I bought mine from play-asia.com for €18 delivered.

Playing Resident Evil, the Director's Cut: Dual Shock Edition. It's just the same as the original Director's Cut but the entire soundtrack has been redone, more of an orchestral tone to it. It's interesting. I'm listening on my headphones too =]

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,387 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Didn't realise the soundtrack was redone. Interesting. Always thought the resi soundtrack was excellent.

I'm sure you could find some examples on youtube. I'm not sure if it's an improvement really but it's sort of interesting.

Finished RE 5 so I started Psychonauts last night. Great game. Only one gripe so far though - 1.5mb worth of memory card space?! why?!!?! The amount I had to delete to make room :(

Played a bit of Muramasa: The Demon Blade for the first time last night, gorgeous looking game. Reckon I might turn on the 360 for the first time in ages since Super Meat Boy due out tomorrow I think.
