BotW is an amazing game, Nintendo really nailed how to build an interesting open world. For me though, the total lack of dungeons (apart from the x4 divine beasts) was a massive, massive let down. The shrines got very old, very quickly.

A Link Between Worlds is kinda like an open world game in that you can do the dungeons in any order. But it's a really tight game as well. And the dungeons and puzzles are great.

Yeah i really enjoy LbW, it's a great little game. Not quite on the level of LttP or OoT, but a tasteful nod to the former, and an enjoyable use of the 3D tech too.

I'm not that far into the game (just about to get the second pendant), but I can tell that is a genius peace of art! I actually haven't played none of the Zeldas (I'm more of a PS fan), but I'm definitely gonna upgrade my subscription to get the N64 games too! Super, super excited lol

After a long break away (well mostly playing current gen), I am currently on :

    SNES: Super Turrican (Completed today)

3DS : Majoras mask (Only at first dungeon now)

Switch : Gris, It takes two (with the kids)

PS4/5 : Last of us 2 (60% through - much better than I was expecting)

PSP : FF IV (About 80% through on the moon).

    PS VR : Superhot.

Thousands of games from all generations in the queue but prime candidates for next up include: Stray (PS5), Witcher 3 (debating wether to do Witcher 2 first on 360), GTA V (Series X), BOTW, Ori Blind Forest (Switch), Super Metroid (SNES), FF V (GBA)

Inside plays great on the Switch but Christ, it gets weird at the end.

I got stuck near the start of Limbo. 🤣 Think I'll restart, I must have missed something obvious. And then go on to Inside.

Just play Inside. Limbo is all style no substance. Inside is soooooo much better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,035 ✭✭✭Inviere

Ah I enjoyed Limbo....theres a certain 'void' and emptiness to it that really fits the tone of the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,210 ✭✭✭Quigs Snr

Enjoyed Limbo on the xbox 360 back in the day, based on the above Inside for 1.99 on the eshop for switch is a no brainer.

👍 Cool, thanks for the head's up. I'll give em both a whirl.

    Limbo.

    That poor, poor spider.

    Just leave him alone!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,390 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It's not a bad game but it just says absolutely nothing with an ending that it meant to make it seem deeper but it's just a load of twaddle really. There's some pretty awful puzzles later on that are only tough because they place important puzzle elements off camera.

It actually put me off playing Inside because I thought it was similarly overhyped but nope, it really delivers on everything. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Started playing punchout and in terrible at it. Getting my ass handed to me by the first bald bull fight.

Did a bit of messing around with latency and turns out my IPS monitor might have awful black levels and colours but the latency is actually really good. Only had to add 2 frames of run ahead, after that you get it feeling wrong and dropped frames. It kind of lines up with the manufacturers claim of 20ms latency.

    A bit of N64 at the moment…

Super Mario 64 - 109 stars. Tony Huge Island, Rainbow Road and Tick Tock Clock under way. Not a fan of the last two states really but it absolutely still holds up.

Blast Corps - Another banger. I 100%ed this on a PAL version back in the day. Opening the harder stages now and it’s really hard. The backlash is a tough one to control and some stages where you need to shove dynamite around… Hnnggggg.

Getting my ass handed to me but soda popinski now. No tricks to him, it's a straight up slugfest.

The Wii reboot (or Wiiboot, if you will) of Punch Out is in my GOAT top 10. Never really gelled with the original in the same way.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,390 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Really? Because the Wii version is pretty much a straight up remake of the original. Most of the attack patterns are the same and so are the controls.

Playing Punchout now I can see why it's so fondly remembered. Such a simple but incredible game.

Just finished playing through Inside in one sitting. Didn't know anything about it at all so went in totally cold. Wow. Absolutely incredible. Couldn't put it down till I was done.

rather interestingly it gives me really strong Half Life 2 vibes. I think it's the non stop one take kind of action throuout, feels like one long take in a film.

Cannot recommend enough, for two euro it's a steal.

Punchout is one of those games that's really simple and just works well. I have a cabinet of one and I still play it the odd time, the top monitor is going a bit wobbly though

The only picture I have of it, took an age to find a replacement knock out button

Ninja Usagimaru - The Gem of Blessings on the 3DS. Beautiful little puzzle-platformer on the 3DS eShop, actually reminds me a lot of the handheld Klonoa games — the difficulty kind of spikes pretty hard, mind you.

Also trying to force myself to finish off Yakuza 5 so I can get on with less fragmented, stop-start entries in the series. Think I'm coming up on the last whack of chapters, but yeah, feels a bit too big for its own good at times.

Not heard of that game before but see it's on steam as well.

Picked up the Atari 50 collection for cheap in Smyths. Don’t have any nostalgia for Atari games and wouldn’t be particularly interested in revisiting them, but heard it’s a new gold standard for retro collections so gave it a go.

It’s very impressive. There’s around 100 games from arcade to Jaguar, but it’s all presented via an interactive timeline full of original art assets, rare documentation, archive video clips, new interviews with the developers etc… Then you can choose to just play the games they’re talking about, or in some cases extra updated new versions / remixes from the Digital Eclipse team.

Definitely an impressive and novel way of presenting the material - goes well beyond just having a bunch of emulated games. Would love to see this replicated for future anthologies of stuff I have more affection for. The same team did the Turtles collection earlier this year which is also bundled with tonnes of extras I believe, but think they’ve got the extra step in putting this Atari one together.

Fished my 32X down out of the attic this evening, realised I hadn't actually used it in the guts of a decade, which is mental!

Bloody hell it takes a lot of effort to get actually working. I'd totally forgotten. If a game doesn't power on, the issue can be a dirty cart, a dirty cart slot on the 32X, a dirty cart slot on the Megadrive, a dodgy RGB cable to the 32X, a dodgy connector cable between the two consoles, one of the two power supplies on the fritz, One of the 5 ports on the consoles needed for it to work being broken - madness!

I know a lot of them 'didn't work' when people got them initially, I can only imagine how many were down to folks just not being able to get the whole mess set up properly.

Throw two Switches on the Megadrive and a region switch on the 32X into the mix and it actually took the guts of 30 minutes to figure it all out. Thought it might be broken at one point. I even had the odd situation where my Megadrive games would boot but 32X games wouldn't. Then the Mega CD kept fecking up too.

So after all my farting about, I managed to get it going and rewarded myself with some Motocross Championship.

    ..

Now I remember why it's been in the attic for so long :pac:

Yeah they're finicky alright, as you say there's a lot of points of failure. I'd add the internal 32X ribbon cables to that list too, they're a nuisance for needing reseating.

I still like the 32X though, along with the Mega CD....totally subjectively and inexplicably, but I still have a soft spot for them. Actually have a soft spot for hardware that failed because it wasn't used or developed properly for...Jag, 3DO, 32X...what could have been 😔

I totally forgot about the ribbon cable issue. When I bought my 32X that was the first thing I actually had to do with it, wasn't working at all.

I know what you mean re 'what could have been' - was playing some Starwars Arcade last night on it and I'd love to have seen what a proper library for the console would have looked like. It's really quite something seeing a Megadrive pushing out a game like that.

I never really invested all that much in the Mega CD for some reason. I've had both models and a handful of games but haven't spent that long with it at all. Always had plans to play through Snatcher but have still yet to get around to it.

Gave Contact (DS) a whirl for the first time in a while. Aside from it kinda trying to do too much with itself, I'm always struck by the fact it set out to be a spiritual successor to Earthbound and ended up getting completely overshadowed by the actual sequel to Earthbound.

Snatcher is reason enough to own a Mega CD. I played it in the 90s, knew nothing about the game other than the back of the case made it sound very good....and sure enough it became one of my all time favourite games. If I were to play it though for the first time today, I do wonder would it still have that same effect....maybe not? I finished Policenauts towards the end of last year, knowing that has a significant cult-like following. I enjoyed it, there were moments of greatness in it....but also a LOT of text. Glad I played it, but likely won't ever revisit it.
