Playing Kingdom Hearts 1 for the first time. I haven't a notion what I'm doing tbh, in the Deep Jungle with Tarzan now having been hockeyed by enemies in the Coliseum (and I don't think I was able to go any further in the Wonderland).

It's a thrill to see the Disney and FF characters but... I don't know if this one will pick up?

The jungle world is far and away the worst world in the game, it picks up after it.

Also if you want to keep up with the series after KH1 be warned that after KH1 the story becomes the most god awful piece of fiction ever written by mankind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭Burkey0

Aye I hear the story is almost not worth keeping up with, and in any case I probably won't be able to play all the games in the series. Have 2 waiting for me if I complete this though!

Played some Motorhead on the PS/PS3 last night, not bad, ok so they reduced everything to the minimum, set a night, some draw distance issues masked, but it runs at 60fps and plays well.

Gotten back into Phantasy Star IV last night and visited Alys's home town. The game got a few chuckles out of me here, it's implied that Alys was bullying some of the towns folk to tell her how pretty she is and some other really nice touches. It's the level of detail that went into the game that I love and how every area no matter how small has its own personality.

Finally got around to digging out the gba, flash cart and Zelda and the Minish Cap.

Rather surprisingly the flash cart and cable installed no problem on Windows 7. No additional drivers required. I was expecting a head melt installing it to be honest given the age of the devices.

Got Sonic Racing Transformed, it's pretty good - particularly the Golden Axe track! HAven't unlocked the dwarf yet though. You change crafts as you race from cars to boats to planes, it's more reminiscent of Diddy Kong Racing than Mario Kart 7 even if the latter similarly doesn't confine you to one vehicle in the race

Ciderman's secret shame. Here he is dressed up as Gilius Thunderhead. That disguise fools no one!

R-Type delta, had to give it a whirl after a (once :S) poster here uploaded a video to youtube. What a splendid game!

[trolling] But it's not as great as R-Type Final! [/trolling]

Been playing a good bit of R-Type Leo on the cab the last couple of days (off sick with man flu).
Not the best R-Type game but I've been enjoying it anyway.

I remember playing that in Dr Quirkies and doing quite well in it, this is why I know it's not the best of the series!

I am lucky enough to have a whole range of R-Type games to suck playing, with R-Types and R-Type Delta for the PS, R-Type Final for the PS2, R-Type, somewhere, for the Gameboy, an excellent version is currently living on my Turbo Everdrive for the TG-16.

When the great war of 2011/2012 was raging here on the A&R forum, between the armies of Raiden, Gradius and Darius fans, R-Type fans were the ones in back, laughing, all the time knowing they were all the cooler for not joining the fray!

I think Leo gets a lot of flak for being different. It's still a great game. I'd play it over Final any day.

I've been noticing a trend with shmuppers recently where they can't stand the old school shooters, it's something akin to shmup hipster-ism. Apparently Radiant Silvergun is an over rated heap of junk. They seem to think anything that isn't bullet hell is terrible.

I've always liked the various versions of R-Type (the older classics rather than the more recent editions).
I was into the side scrolling shooters well before I started really playing the proper shmups like Donpachi and its ilk.

I don't know about calling dodonpachi and it's ilk 'proper' shmups. They're all shmups to me. I much prefer the old school shooters to the bullet hell games. There's more imagination and variety in one stage on Einhander, R-type or Radiant Silvergun than most bullet hell games.

Well I meant what most people would call a proper shmup.

Well most people would be wrong since the term Shmup was coined by C64 magazine Zzap 64 and I'm not aware of a conversion of dodonpachi and it's ilk to the C64 :)

I'm really glad I'm not alone in this thinking. Give me Raiden any day over Dodonpachi black label younger pre teen bezel art edition.

Well most people are usually wrong, in my experience.

Ahh, hipsters are a bit mainstream these days anyway.
It's actually true when you think about it :)

So in an age where hipsterism is considered mainstream, surely these are worrying times for the likes of Sir Ultimate? How does a hipster retain that degree of exclusion from mainstream culture?

Personally, I wouldn't class Einhander or Radiant Silvergun old school at all, way too recent. R-Type, Image Fight, Raiden and that ilk are old school to me - and better games.

By the way, I dont think this is 100% true. New shmup players who got into the genre via bullet hell games tend not to like the older ones.

However, anyone whos opinion actually matters (!) still plays and appreciates pre bullet hell. Its still reflected in the prices of boards rightnow.

Well I suppose I should paint everyone with the same brush but I do notice a lot of bullet hell players looking in disdain at games that aren't bullet hell. Radiant Silvergun was considered the best example of the genre when I was following shmup games over 10 years ago, there were a few that said it was overrated but still a great game. However now there's a lot of people saying it's flat out crap compared to bullet hell games. I feel these people expect silvergun to be a bullet hell (and idiots in the gaming press love to call it a bullet hell shooter) when it isn't so even comparing the two is wrong. And it's not just games like radiant silvergun, I've seen them dismiss stuff like R-type and Gradius. For some reason they all love Raiden though.

Ah there's always a wealth of pretentious indie games and mediocre but "underappreciated" / "rare" Japanese RPGs to go around!

In a current gen mood at the moment. Far Cry 3 is a lot of fun, but having only got to the second island after a lot of play it seems to share its predecessors problem of offering too much content. At least the campaign missions have a bit of imagination to them!

Also have made a start on 999 sequel Virtue's Last Reward. Seems good so far, and the puzzles are a bit more involved. I haven't been on public transport much in the last week - my usual 3DS place - so have to remind myself to play more at home!
