I have no idea where your getting these ideas from but I am sorry to tell you your completely off.
The HD box looks nothing like that,More like a matt black version of their d4a (silver standard set top box) and will include hard drive. channel line ups are ....

    channel 4 hd
    bbc hd
    nat geo
    nat geo wild
    discovery hd
    Bio
    history.

    Start date is 05/08/09...this Wed.

Well I was getting my info from noobs on the phone.

Thanks for the correction that list looks better.

That is the HD box in Holland.

    7 channels then?

At first anyway, the list I suppose will only grow. Sky are unlikely to let any of their channels HD go before xmas considering they do a lot more installs round then.

Their new box looks a lot like this and uses the 2008 model Philips remote.
Seeing as all their previous set top pieces were Pace (pace having bought the STB devision of Philips) excluding their DVR it seems likely its Philips Tech inside as well as the eternal similarities...

Remote looks like this (in black)....

    No EurosportHD then? - That's a shame.

    Great news about the HD.

Does anyone know which package you have to be on to get the new channels?
I'm on Digital TV Select & Digital+ package but was thinking of dropping down to Digital TV Value & Digital + as we never watch BIO or QVC.

    cheers

I just phoned them to order it and they told me that they are not officially launching it until tomorrow, so I have to phone back then to place the order.

All the information on here is correct, price and the list of channels.

Sorry, I was looking at the list that hightower1 posted. The price will be 7.50, so 2.50 on top of the current DVR.

Any idea if it has HDMI pas through. I need my PS3 connected and TV only has one port :(

What capacity and type of Hard Disk?
Is the HDD changeable to a larger capacity?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,258 ✭✭✭RangeR

I just rang up to chance my arm in ordering it. Not a sausage. However, she said that if I already had Digital+, then I wouldn't need a new box. Is this correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,171 ✭✭✭fbradyirl

Really?? I have digital+ but there's no HDMI output on the box

Of course you will need a new box. The current DVR does not have HDMI.

That's what I was thinking. To be honest, I shouldn't have posted that. The rep even said that she wasn't technical and that I would get better answers tomorrow when the product is officially released and their scripts are updated*

*Was that too cheeky of me?

    Duh!

DVDs will fit in a CD player too.

Not sure, but the new box does have a larger disk. Forgot to post that earlier.

Cheers. I do have many questions, so sorry for posting them all randomly, but I'm really interested in this. I was never interested in Digital + before due to it's lack of "features" but it seems to have stabilised recently [series link?]. This added to HD would top me over the edge in forking out my monthly moolah.

When HD is released will there just be one HD package for the moment, regardless of what digital package you sub to?
HDMI pass through [BIG thing for me]?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,858 ✭✭✭paulm17781

I was told initially there will be 7/8 channels and they will be available to anyone who subscribes (on the max package anyway). Nothing premium as yet.

If it's the same box as they use in Holland, the manual only shows on HDMI port so pass through looks unlikely.

I was told €90 install fee  So I don't think I'll be rushing to get it.

Wow, that seems a little steep, and there was me hoping I wouldn't need to get them to install it, that they'd just deliver the box out :D

I was told €20 installation Fee. I was also told if you're on the Digital Select package you only get 4 of the HD channels. The girl I was speaking to didn't seem like knew too much though, kept telling me to ring back tomorrow or Thurs.

The HD receiver costs more than €90. Of course you never own it.

You made the correct decision in my opinion. We've been hearing this scatty drip feed of information from NTL/UPC for years. If I had a choice it would be SKY without doubt. Better quality TV all around, less compression/noise and HD availability.
Hmm ... Was just about to sign up for Sky+HD but now I see the buzz around UPC launch. I guess I'll wait a few weeks to see how well the UPC product is received.

I would prefer a cable service, but right now SKy looks to have the edge in terms of picture quality and services (EPG, disc recording, ...).

Very interested to hear how the cable service shapes up!

Record video data on hard disk for viewing at a time of your chosing (time shifting your viewing). SKy call it Sky+ (which seems well received), UPC digital+ (which has mixed reviews).
