I don't really but it always worth a try!

    UPC standard response is:

In about a week you shall get a reply apologising for the delay and can you send your account details........

Or they have sent a booster signal to your box which should resolve the problem

Or contact their customer service number.....

And you will almost certainly starting getting unwanted advertisements of UPC services ( MUTV big push at the moment) to your email address...

God knows how many times I have tried to mail them and always got a random standard answer (like one of the Infoanon examples), as it seems like CS never knows what is going on.

Last time I sent them a request (stupid me) I asked them about the series link and dual recording and was told they were working on it and it should be up an running with the next couple of months. 4 days later it all was implemented (well almost)!

So geting back to the OP: There are enough non-Sky channels availble in HD and I could imagine that these channels would want to push these services. There is plenty of availble frequencies on the grid so what's holding them back is the million dollar question!

2 days now gone does this mean I have to wait until Monday for the third day, or is Saturday looked on as a working day by upc??

UPC have obviously up'd there customer service!! I received the following mail from them with regard to there HDtv service,

Thank you for your email, please be advised that we are in the process of carrying out field tests for the High Definition service but unfortunately we do not have a set date for when this service will become available.Should there be any changes we will notify customers in advance.

I know it doesn't set a release date for the service, but at least I know that it is being worked on, let's hope it release is sooner rather than later.

Possibly more to do with the fact that you posted the mail on Boards.ie

I have 2 emails with them for the last 2.5 weeks with no reply......

It was a 12 day wait before I received a response to a mail I'd sent 3/4 weeks ago, so it's still hardly stellar. To be honest I wasn't expecting a response at all though, so I guess that's an improvement :)

I'd said if it worked for me then you should also give it a try, if your queries are not private;)

I posted this same message on another thread:

UPC should get their ass in gear as according to the following article SKY is seeing a significant growth and demand in it's HD service in the UK and this is driving new customer numbers.

    http://www.breakingnews.ie/business/eycwaugbgbau/rss2/

I know this is UK based numbers, but a similar relative scenario could be expected in Ireland. UPC could miss the boat if they don't move soon.

    Here's hoping!

I got my NTL BB and TV/Phone package yesterday, as a throw away line I said when is HD available, she said after the Summer!

It was worth asking I guess ;)

But the question I would have responded with would be "Which summer!??"

I was toying between UPC and Sky and finally opted for Sky. Whilst speaking to a UPC salesperson I said that the deciding factor was the HD service. She said that UPC would be launching HD in 2-3 months, and that I should I sign up and get upgraded later ... I guess they would say that wouldn't they.

You made the correct decision in my opinion. We've been hearing this scatty drip feed of information from NTL/UPC for years. If I had a choice it would be SKY without doubt. Better quality TV all around, less compression/noise and HD availability.

Whoops! My bad. Seen the ad.

Well i phoned them as well to ask, and they told me that it arrives next week.

There will be 8 channels, unfortunately no Sky 1 HD, movies or sport but BBC HD and some National Geographic channels.

Instead of 5 euro for the current PVR box, it would be 7.50. So 2.50 extra a month, but didn't ask about HD sub like sky. I'll be inclined to wait till Sports get on there before i go for it!!

I just saw the ad on boards which says "HD available now". I called to check and I was told it will available from Tuesday. Upto 8 channels I was told. Sounds good. :)

I bought A full HD TV this week. When I tried to connect my UPC box with the component lead i came across a problem. I called UPC and they said the HD box will be out in the next three weeks and what i was trying to do was impossible.. ( I called 1st Aug). Anyway the question is if i change over will the picture be better on the non HD channels if I am using a component lead rather than a scart lead.

Component is for Games consoles deisgned for US market. US does not have SCART.

Unless your TV is substandard then SCART RGB is same quality as Component for SD.

VGA is essentially SCART and does up to about 2560 x 1540 happily. The decision in Europe not to enhance SCART RGB for HD is political rather than Technical.

Most newer HD setboxes (DTT, cable or Satellite) will only output SD on Component. They mandate HDMI due to HDCP for HD.

The HD UPC box likely will only do HD via HDMI. It will likely upconvert SD to HD on HDMI too.

Are they offering HD for cable and MMDS customers or cable only?

Is it possible to do HD over MMDS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,461 ✭✭✭✭watty

Yes it's technically possible to HD on MMDS.
No, it's unlikely. There isn't the capacity on MMDS unless they changed EVERY setbox anf then changed the headends feeding MMDS to MPEG4. That's not economicaly feasible.

So it is very likely to be Cable only.

Freesat is a UK exclusive service [available anywhere you can receive Sky]

I hear UPC will be making an announcement regarding there HD service on Tuesday the 4th. But only time will tell.

In the very unlikely event that RTE launches HD, it won't be free on Satellite.

DTT is unlikely now before 2010 and won't initially have HD.

Even when irish broadcasters do launch HD, there will be very few HD programs for quite a while. BBC HD content is like BBC 2 in 1967 :(

Surely the amount of American imports shown would be HD. Even the Australian soap operas are HD these days.
