    You need
    a) HD for these?
    b) Irish TV via Pay TV on sat/Cable rather than free UK channels?
    c) You would REALLY buy an HD TV & PayTV for that kind of stuff?
    d) Unless stuff is shot really for HD only rather than for SD & HD, most of the shots are too close / framed too tight. :(

TBH I was thinking of what BBC HD is like and likelyhood of compelling home produced stuff.

Other than Sport or Wildlife shot for HD and Cinema on a 48" to 60" screen, HD is utterly pointless compared with changing 405 Line B&W to 625 Line Colour.

There is no doubt there is a lot more "HD" labelled content than a year ago and that UPC are picking exactly the right time to launch. There was little when Sky Launched.

Unless people have more money than sense, Sky's so called 3D next year will be pointless. It's stereoscopic TV, not real 3D at all.

If you call them they tell you. The only ones I remember were BBC, Discovery and Disney.

Ok the girl did not know the full list but adding mine to yours gives us this.

    Diccovery HD
    BBC HD
    Disney HD
    Eurosport HD
    National Geographic HD

I am not sure weather the service will be six or eight channels so me are missing one or maybe 3 from the list.

Edit I hope History is the 6th one.

Maybe she meant all 4 BBC channels which would then total 8

No she told me 8 different channels (I think), it was definitely at least 6 so it couldn't be all 4 BBC channels. Do BBC even broadcast all their channels in HD? I *think* History was in the list she gave me.

Does anyone have any info on the box? Is it that nice looking one posted a few pages back? Has anyone used the new box, if so how does it compare to the DVR?

    There is Only BBC HD.

Some HD channels are not 100% true HD.

BBC HD is a seperate channel the main BBC channels are not in HD.

If History is the other one she listed well then there are out six channels.

    Diccovery HD

Nope its not, i have a freesat HD box and it works perfectly in Ireland.

I meant in a marketing sense.

Obviously you cant make a satellite do certain areas, but i am correct in saying Freesat was a Joint venture by BBC and ITV for a free alternative to sky for the UK!

Just because sat4free stuck their own stickers and sold boxes dosnt mean it was originally for the Irish market.

Any one notice you have to put a UK postcode on setup DURR!

I have Freesat myself, my point was its nothign to do with broadcasters in Ireland.

So watty before you edit my posts get it right.

The ONLY Irish Satellite services are the UK ones. However the five Irish channels are provided on a UK platform (Sky, VAT goes to UK), exclusively to Irish address subscriptions. RTE & TG4 also to NI addresses. The actual service can be used any place with a signal and Sky box that you take the card to. Since Freesat is FTA and needs no card, subscription or even a special box, it's not exclusive to the UK.

Freesat is perfectly available from Spain to Iceland and Mayo to Munich (some extreme east or south areas need larger dish).

It's only marketed to UK. A service is what you receive.

I can infract or ban people that insist on misleading the readers.

Some other possible channels currently available in the UK market:

    ITV HD
    C4 HD
    Bio HD
    Crime and Investigation HD
    ESPN HD
    FX HD
    MTV HD
    Sci Fi HD

All the rest are Sky channels.

The first two and Sci Fi are the ones I'd like to see included.

The box shown above for HD is a DVR, does anyone know will they have a PVR alternative? I'm not bothered with the recording to hard drive lark or anything but i would like a box that could upscale the SD channels that I already have.

as for the upc box....il believe it when i see it.at the end of the day as much as i hate paying sky they still have no compitition in ireland when it comes to supplyn hd channels

    2 quick questions...

Anyone have the dimensions of that (very sexy looking) HD box ?

How can UPS propose to deliver HD when their SD offering is so badly compressed ?

No all HD boxes from Sky or UPC are recorders.

If you mean in TV settings -> High(RGB) mode than I've already done that and it doesn't work. Any other suggestions?
