I drink a lot of water every day.

    2 ltrs before lunch
    .5l at lunch
    2 ltrs until 5.30
    pint at tea time
    2 pints before bed.
(excl any cups of tea or pints of milk)

I'm don't sweat excessively, just wondered if there is too much water one can drink?

What you are taking in is fine, but you can die of Water intoxication. Thats when large amounts of water is consumed in a short period of time. But you have nothing to worry about.

There was a woman in america who died from drinking too much water when she entered a competition to win a ps3 for her kids by seeing if she could beat a guy to drink as much as possible and the first one to pee lost. She won the PS3 but died a few hours later when her kidneys gave up.... I wonder if the PS3 is actually used now?! :D

But seriously... too much water can cause your kidneys to over filtrate your blood giving you low blood pressure which can lead to organ failure...

You sound like you drink way too much to me...

I like the way you switch between pints and liters half was through. Confusing.

I wouldn't be worried about drinking that amount of water at all.

Twas a Wii - competition was called "Hold your wee for a Wii"

OP - doesn't seem like excessive water consumption over the course of a day.

    OP, that's about 5.5 litres.

If you can manage that without pissing every 15 minutes then go right ahead. After 2 litres I'm pissing like a race horse.

On a standard day I'd have the following..

    350ml about 8am
    350ml about 10am
    350ml about 11:30am

    600ml at lunch

    about 2 litres between 1 and 5

and prob about 2 litres more between 5 and bed time.

If in the gym/football I'd add about 3 litres or more to that.

2.5 litres a day is the general reccommendation, however it will also vary from person to person. It will depend on your food consumption, how much you exercise and your bladder.

If you drink too much water too quickly (like the Wii woman) - that's dangerous. People 'burst' or 'drown' if they for some reason don't urinate (like when taking ecstasy- the brain tells the body it is overheating and to store water- like a camel!).

Too much water can mess up the fluid balnce in your body, but if your feeling ok then the amount you are drinking must be fine.

Sorry, pints as in pint glasses.

I feel ok after it, actaully on reflection, I prob drink more water than that.

I'm finding that I must need it as I usually would be quite a while in the toilet first thing in the morning now I'm done in a few seconds!

I take approximately 2 litres + 1 litre per workout + coffee throughout the day. OP's sounds like quite a lot to me (depending on exercise levels of course).

Thats WAY too much water, especially if you're having extra fluids in tea, coffee, milk etc

Also being thirsty all the time can be a symptom of Type 2 Diabetes.

    OMFG

You take around 6 litres of water a day. I would bet both my legs that a doctor or a nutritionalist would tell you this is way to much.

Average recomended daily intake for normal person is like 1.5 to 2 litres a day.

And marathon runners take like 4 litres a day when training.

I don't know the negative effects of excess water but its common sense that too much of anything is bad and 6 litres of water a day is crazy. If I were to do that, I could'nt do anythin else for the day. I would be pissing all the time. Also excess water is an appetite suppresser so it could be effecting your diet.

I would say you should stop and get some proper advice. One thing, why do you drink that much, do you just really like water. You only need to be hydrated (piss is clear) and you dont need 6 litres a day for that.

Or type 1 for that matter.

Lost weight, feel tired or blurry vision?

    Thanks for replies.

I'm an active guy in that I do a lot of walking to bus, work, cylcing etc and pretty sporty.

I've always been drinking water, however the quantity has increased in the last 2-3 years. Initally I blamed it on the office environment in that office was stuffy.

I'm currently taking supplements for training but I've been doing that for years on and off so that's hardly a reason.

Diabetes has been mentioned to me by some but I've just passed it off.

Funny thing is some days I might piss 4-5 a day other times its 2-3 times a day!

Regarding my body mass, I'm 6ft3, 17.5 stone and I'm 27 years of age.

you guys have to be joking. i drink on the order of 2 gallons (~7.5L) of water per day. i'm 6'3" 240#s, or roughly the same size as this guy. i've been tested for syndrome X and diabetes and so forth. i'm fine.

getting checked out medically is not a bad idea. but if you feel fine, don't worry about it.

That is what a Doctor that I hurl with told us. Once the wee is clear, you are 100% hydrated and any other water you take after that is just going to go straight through you.

    Personally, I find after about 1 - 1 1/2 litres, I'm weein' like a racehorse.

Yeah roughly anything over 1.5L of water will be wasted as the kidneys do not have a high enough salt gradient to allow for much more to be absorbed.

NO!!!! he is going to die!!!

    :pac:

i heard if you drink too much water i.e. not wee for a wii amount, but if you drink well over what you should per day that you lose vitamins from your body, dillution or something like...but i've never seen any evidence in a book or on the internet

I once drank a litre and a half in 10 mins, I felt fine until I went to move, and then I realised I had drunk waaaay too much, it was extremely uncomfortable and painful.

It does sound like you drink alot. Over how long a period are those 5litres being drunk?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Your best bet if you're drinking that much water is to make sure you wear a floatation device at all times and carry around some injectable insulin. You never know when drowning or diabetes will take hold.

My intake which sometimes can exceed 7 litres would be from when I get up to when I go to bed. 7am-12pm. I would normally have 2 pint glasses of water before I hop in the scratcher. I somehow have trained my self not to get up during the night but some mornings, I can be quite a while in the toilet....

As a general rule you should only drink what your body wants. Your body makes you thirsty depending on your hydration levels and any excess drinking is removed

Highly highly highly unlikely for someone his age. Same with type 2 unless you're very obese
