Don't see any loyalists here so no-one to deal with. In any event the poppy is nothing to do with Unquiet Graves subject matter - save in the minds of Sinn Fein IRA supporters who hate any thing English or Protestant .

Sinn Fein takeover, the North takeover, on the thread.

    Why am I not surprised.

The program was called The Meaning of Life.

I found Mary Lou Mcdonald to be quite wooden, a political interview.

Maybe time they reviewed the type of guests they have on and stay away from politicians who can't be anything but political.

    More lies and rubbish.

My partner and children are protestant. Try living in the real world for a change Truth, not some Daily Mail one of invention and stereotype.

So who is here justifying or glorifying the Glenanne gang - or even praising their sad residue for "embracing the peace process" or "turning away from violence" or any of that claptrap routinely wheeled out in favour of "Gerry the Peacemaker"

And to be fair there was nothing in it for the Glennane thugs. Don't remember them being invited to the White House or getting full time jobs for life as "community activists" or taking over the streets to have a laughable budget paramilitary funeral for their dead murderers .

Indee, maybe they are the true sainted peacemakers who turned away from violence while being forced to give up their stupid marches, biased political system and police force and accept interference in their soveriegn affairs from Dublin.

    Who said anyone was.

Duffy managed to turn the programme into a political discussion which he wanted to conduct as if the there was no context for what happened on this island but the emergence of the IRA and SF.

The same utter rubbish you and other partitionists engage in.

Now I am going to leave this discussion to those who wish to talk about good television, which this show wasn't because of the host's by now legendary bias and brutal attempts at ambushing a guest, who managed IMO to stay rational and calm and make him look like he was going to burst a bloodvessel.

Still numbly promoting the Sinn Fein delusional agenda. Mary Lou came accross as the slithery self serving morally compromised parasite she is.

No support for the Glennane murderers for a Nobel Peace Prize then? Just Saint Gerry then I suppose.

Take away from the programme was:

Mary Lou: I'm a Catholic, I go to mass
    Murder is justifiable.

Of course it is how could you join Sinn Fein and not be comfortable with the odd murder - or indeed a 30 year campaign of murder

Nathan Carter is clinically depressed i'm sure. He sounds very flat, defeated. Hope he gets sorted.

No gigs for 2020, must be broke and bored, does he get covid pandemic payment?

Tony Holohan a guest with Joe Duffy, the family of Vicky Phelan got their solicitor to stop him talking about her but I am sure Cervical Check and Covid were mentioned

Tony has a book to promote (and a new romance)

Can we expect him next on DWTS

Did he get his big job after leaving the previous job with a pension?

Looks like Joe is back for new series next Sunday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,978 ✭✭✭brian_t

Over the course of the 18th season of the programme, Joe speaks with Olympic silver medal-winning athlete Sonia O’Sullivan; British actor Ricky Tomlinson; disability activist and writer Sinéad Burke; Irish tenor and gold medal winning para-athlete Ronan Tynan; actor and theatre director Olwen Fouéré; journalist, writer and drama critic Fintan O’Toole; actor, writer and farmer Mary McEvoy; former RTÉ broadcaster Bryan Dobson; Travellers’ rights activist Catherine Joyce Collins; and former Senator David Norris.

Sinéad Burke is first next Sunday.

Any decent producer would line up Derek Warfirkd for Joe.

Not sure about ex-RTE staff being interviewed and David Norris hasn't exactly been short of in-depth interviews over the years.

The problem with the entire side is that it’s not very edgy. Stephen Fry was probably brought in to show “Look! We can be edgy too” but mostly it’s pillar of society those with gadget convective opinions.

Watching the bits of the Sinead Burke interview. Firstly he's not having a conversation.

For example she says, She remembers starting school on the day of her 4th birthday, she puts this down to her disability and whether or not she might need an extra year to repeat. Not that the interview should be confrontational but it should be a conversation, Joe should have asked, "do you not feel this is something that most parents think about who have children born in September?", rather he allows her to continue down this path of the reason for this is because of my disability, and you might now consider this to be ablest.

She goes on to talk-about how she though of 2 things to do, one was to become a teacher which she did and the other and she was embarrassed to say this to Joe, was to be a radio DJ. Again she puts both choices down to disability. These seem like natural choice to more "normal sized people".

"Was your household religious?" A complete move away from the idea that families are interdependent, which they are? A better question might have been "Do you think your family are a closer knit family, now because of this perhaps stronger interdependence?"

In the second half he asks "where the Nazis evil?" yeah they were! simple.

Anyway a bland conversation that I have heard before, but she's move away from somethings.

I found that interview very boring and to be honest he looked bored with it too.

I don't mind the "were your family religious?" Question as it's kinda what the show is about ..whether religion, spirituality or nihilism.

It was a very surface level interview .

To be honest some of the stuff she talked about while being out socislising....being lifted up, your head being used (well attempting to be used as a table ) etc have all happened to me , guys can be right d1cks with a few pints on board, especially if you are on the petite side. So she certainly wasn't being targeted due to a disability....not saying the behaviour is right as it's downright annoying and disrespectful.

Anyway found the interview a check box affair.

I enjoyed the Brian Dobson interview.

He speaks a lot faster than I expected for an ex newsreader....I suppose nervous being the other side of the interview table.

I admired and respected his reply to the Bertie aherne question.

Nothing earthbreaking in the interview but enjoyable nonetheless.

Dobson seemed to be really happy and energised during the interview, I think he picked the right time to retire at his peak.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,856 ✭✭✭RoTelly

He is oblivious to the problems in RTÉ, so I have no respect of the man, at the end of the day he is a Newsreader who many though retired after he finished up on six-one.

I enjoyed that interview too. I don't normally look at The Meaning of Life. Bryan (with a "y" by the way!) mentioned that he started with pirate radio on Southside Radio not far from where he was being interviewed in Dun Laoghaire. The conversation went from there to his initial attempt to get a job at RTE, but being being barred because he was on pirate radio. He left out the fact that he gone to super pirate Radio Nova. This is the opposite of articles I read before about Bryan Dobson, where they mention Radio Nova but leave out Southside Radio - even saying he started in Radio Nova which was not true!
