This is my first day of unemployment since I was 18 :) Currently awaiting deportation to the land down under this week with the other convicts.

I think when I get back Ill go on the scratch and use the time to spend 10 hours per day learning Dutch. About the only place (along with Scandanavia) still largely untouched by the recession. Holland has a great oul lifestyle and decent summer weather.

Don't know about the rest of Scandinavia but this might be news to the Swedes where the unemployment rate in rising and their government is talking about economic stimulus legislation.

If I was well enough to go back, I'd be there in the morning.
No one will be replacing me as the entire company is closing anyway, (and who could replace me anyway, I am/was brilliant at my job).

Well, out of 83 people, so far only 9 are unemployed, which my calculations make as barely more than 1 in 10.

So, things aren't really as bad as people here seem to make out.

Well the live register rate for January shows 9.2% of the workforce are signing on.
So 9/10 people have some sort of employment

no dude it is if you did this poll a year ago there would already be 1500 voters but cos people have no money they lost their broadband so they cant get online.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :o

10% is a pretty bad level of unemployment.

Edit: Why the public poll, is this some kind of government spot check to find the dossers?

Not really, unless you grew up knowing only the celtic tiger.

We had 20% unemployment in the 80's even though lots of people
    were emigrating.

Er yes, yes of course. Just apply for it in writing..and send a check.

Although if it involves working with the public you can keep it. Both myself and potential employers soon find out I dont like dealing with people.
