    Hey Keno88,

They only sell mad cat quads is that right? Personally I wouldn't entertain anything other that an established make such as Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki. I know you will pay a lot more for these makes but you'll also get a lot more back on trade in when the time comes. the brother has a Yamaha and the cousin has a Suzuki, both great machines very reliable and tough. As for mad bikes ireland, cant comment on them, never had any dealings with them.

    hi,

I bought a quad from mad catz in kilkenny for my son for xmas 08
already i have had to replace the battery & a coil. total 100 euro.
there was a 3 month warrenty but when i called i spoke to the owner
who informed me that i was a week over my warrenty & he did not have to & would not honour it. but he would be happy to sell me any parts
i needed. i told him i only had the quad since xmas & the battery was gone & he informend me the battery supplied was not a good one but
he could supply me with a good one for full price.
I also went to buy a helmet off them in feb, called them first & they had a
junior helmet in store, drove from wex to kilkenny - no helmet in stock.
were not at all bothered by their mistake.

All in all I found them very rude, & when there was a problem they didnt wanna know. I would not buy from them again or recommend them to anyone at all.

having spent years fixing the chinese (who flung dung) quads, i have to say they arent worth buyin. you would be far better off buyin a brand name quad. the quality of the chinese quads is just so poor and they dont last. had an '89 suzuki 250 kingquad that was completely wercked and every time we went out it ended up towin 3 month old chinese quads home. buy the best you can afford but avoid the honda with the electronic gears as they give a good bit of hassle with the gear selection

only buy a quality brand name
    Honda, Suzuki, Polaris.
buy cheap jap and it will haunt you.

Sorry to kinda of highjack this thread, but I'd probably get the answer here as easily as starting a new thread. I'm 6ft1 and a big build and was thinking of buying a quad. Looking at a few on Donedeal and the likes I see a good selection, but I'm worried that if I go view them it'll be a waste of time as I'll be too big for it. I know a farm style quad like a Honda 400 trx would be ok but I am reluctant to waste my time viewing anything smaller because I think it'll be underpowered and too small. Can someone with experience with quads tell me if there is that much of a difference between a 150 and a 400 in terms of frame size? and will a 150 be underpowered with a large adult on it rather than a teen etc. ?

    anybody have a promax quad??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 879 ✭✭✭dunsandin

I have 1 1/2 quads - a Honda 350cc and a fungchongweng. The Fungchongweng lasted 2 days - my eldest managed to split the engine crankcase into two neat halves, as they are made out of Weetabix. The Honda is a tank, and my two little headers cant break it no matter how they try. I would not even bother to bring the Wangchufung back, my wife bought it for the kids, and one look says it is an under-engineered piece of wallop, I dont want it fixed. The honda is a rock. Dont buy chinese quads, they are a good replica of a real Suzuki/Honda/Kwaka, but they are only a replica, cast in soft aluminium, and only good for looking at with your mates(as long as they are not mechanically inclined)

Go into the promax website www.promax.ie go into products and pick quads and pick the leopard XT150 does it not say the engine is Honda? Is this quad not good? Thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,181 ✭✭✭landkeeper

it says honda based ie a copy
its still a chingchongchen quad made of tinfoil and white metal take the advice given
honda kawasaki suzuki yamaha companies with decades of motorcycle manufacturing behind them that trade on their reputation
there is a reason stuff is cheap it's usually second rate

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 879 ✭✭✭dunsandin

Hmmmm. Leotard 169. Honda based? That must be like Lada is BMW based?Ie, its got the same number of wheels and general lay out.
CVT-must be good, those types of transmission hardly ever give trouble in cars, ahem.
Rear axle looks robust, that looks like a very beefy, big, chunky rear disc alright, -my kid has them on his mountain bike and they never give any trouble. Those brackets holding on the brush handle, sorry axle, are seriously over/under/mis/well engineered. The spacer frame chassis also looks seriously well painted.
Are the wheels those plastic ones you get on the kids trike, or are they rubber, its hard to tell in the pictures. Those Nerd bars must be a great asset, they are listed twice. There is so much else that is good, they should have listed more. I bet you could hardly lift one they are so heavily built. They look really nice.

    Honda versus Kawasaki..?

Anybody got any opinion on these two makes, I am looking at a Honda 250 or a Kawasaki 300 and would just like some feedback if anybody has tried both and has an opinion.

    Cheers :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 879 ✭✭✭dunsandin

The Honda is better. Kawaski are good enough, but their engines can be a real nut cracker when they go wrong, and they do. A lot of Kwaka motors are used on grass cutting machinery, and the general feeling towards them is not so good.Given the choice, I would go for a honda.

Im generally a Yamaha head, but Honda farm quads are a well proven machine. The electronic gears (where fitted) tend to cause some headaches on occasion though.

I have a Honda TRX 500, 2/4wd great bike, and I will never change it until it fails

I had a Honda TRX 250, again this was a great bike, got a great trade in on it for the other one, a friend of mine, who was recently made redundant has just started a contracting business with a quad, sparyer, fert spreader and wipeing. he bought an 01 Honda Forman 450 for €2750, nice bike, would be as good or better than my 500. the value is out there, personally I would find it hard to buy anything else other than a Honda, defintely stick to the mainstream makes if you do purchase;)

I have spoeken to mad bikes ireland and they only do as previously mentioned Mancats Quad, MadCat Junior .We are thinking of giving our son 3 1/2 yr old son a small 50cc quad for christmas for runnig around the area that we are living in. Not going through fields etc. I appreciate that these are not major brands but for the light use he will get out of this ie grass and tarmac roads will it last as i don't want to spend silly money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭RedRag

If it were me, I wouldn't waste my money. 3 1/2 is very young for such a quad (none of my business I know but just giving my advice), even if they are only 50cc they can still be quite fast. My little brother was 8-9 when he got an 80cc Yamaha and being honest wasn't really able to handle it for a while. He's 11 now and its still a bit restricted, great quad though. I personally would wait a few years and buy an established brand.

I have spoeken to mad bikes ireland and they only do as previously mentioned Mancats Quad, MadCat Junior......................

I have dealt with Mad bikes Ireland twice now. (Some drive out of town eh).

The first was when the young lad was 4. I bought him the little quad (Madcar junior i thnk it was) with adjustable throttle to increase or decrease the speed he could achieve. TBH as RedRag mentioned it was wasted on him. He was afraid of it and constantly falling of it. Sold it to a friend whose little fella was 8.

Went back a year later and bought him the Madcat Dingo. Again it was not a "known" name, but as the equivelant Honda version started at €1600+ i simply could't afford to go that much. He still has it to this day.

A few things though. I replaced all nuts that came with the cart with self tighteners. The exhaust came loose twice after just 2 weeks. I takes a small bit of maintenance more than a well known brand, but nothing anyone with a small amount of mechanical knowledge couldn't easily deal with. There have been others faults, but hinestly i think they were more down to the nipper "roughing" the cart more and more as he got used to it more than the build quality.

All in all i would hold out for a better brand if and when its affordable. If (like me) you are not in a position to go for it then you could do worse than the Madbikes gear. Just a personal opinion.

Have a 03 Suzuki Ozark bulletproof !! dont even consider getting chinese scrap the most my suzuki has ever cost me is a set of brake pads and before some one says it it gets used every day with almost 6000 hours on the engine !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 86 ✭✭RedRag

My bro bought a new Yamaha yfm 80 from South East Quad Centre aka Quad Attack it's in Clonroache in Wexford. Great little quad and the guys there know their stuff. Great service and very obliging. I am not associated with them in any way by the way, just a satisfied customer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 889 ✭✭✭doctorchopper

you would be better of buying the likes of one of these
    http://www.donedeal.ie/for-sale/quads/1767932
be roughly the same price of one of the chinese crap quads but would last much longer and would be so much safer as the brakes are the first thing to go on the chinese crappers, plus when the time comes to sell it you would get close to what you paid for it as a kids jap quad holds its value
    her is another one

my best advice here is dont buy a 10 yr old a quad, they are dangerous.
look at all the bad accidents people are having with them
They dont handle predictably, sit back and accelerate too hard and they wheeley, locked back axel and to turn a corner they have to skid to turn, brake hard while turning and you are liable to go over the handle bars.
