I once read somewhere that Timothy Dalton was pretty close to what Ian Flemming imagined/intended James Bond to be?

Was it in "Timmy - an actor's story" by one T. Dalton?

Watched Moon last night and thought it was pretty good. Good story and well put together film. Worth a look.

The Living Daylights (1987) James Bond redux with Timothy Dalton in the first of two 007 outings. Too long and with one conclusion too many but after the excesses of the later Roger Moore flicks a refreshingly low key entry. That said a few jarringly 80s moments like Ms Moneypennys hair/glasses and the shocking Ghetto-Blaster joke. Maryam d'Abo is yet another leading Bond girl who's career never took off.

Dalton is the most underrated Bond imo, Licence to Kill is brilliant, and did the grittyness of Casino Royale nearly 20 years earlier. Its more of an 80s action movie with a Bond twist but its still one of the better Bond movies, some brilliant stunts, the opening plane jump, the waterskiing with no waterskis, and the trucks at the end are all fantastic.

Indeed, I'm presuming Living Daylights will be on ITV4 at some point. ITV1 are making thier way through the entire back catalogue at the moment. It should be on that channel on Saturday October 23rd.

Three Lions, that film just released set in England with some kinda controversial material, especially considering its very funny.

watched it the last night in stitches laughing your man from fonejacker is in it

Wasn't expecting it to be anywhere as near as funny considering the content. Easily one of the funniest films ive seen in a long time. Try out Bad Lieutenant with Nic Cage in it, also very quite funny.
Its a disgrace that films like that don't get enough exposure and crap like hot tub time machine does.

    Cyrus

One of the most un-funny comedies I've seen in a long time. I had high expectations in going to see this; reviews had been very positive and I had heard some good reports.

It never gets going at all. There are moments when you will find yourself thinking: "Ah now, here we go, this is when the laughs will start coming thick and fast" but that never happens. A slight chuckle maybe half a dozen times throughout is all. Nothing major.

Jonah Hill is also far too restrained in his role as the ultimate mummy's boy. There was so much potential for hilarity (albeit of a more low brow kind than what the makers of the film were intending) and that potential was wasted. Getting cheap laughs from crude humour would be far better than getting barely a chuckle from the audience throughout.

Marisa Tomei is also not as 'mumsy' as she could be, nor is she as foxy and alluring as she could be. She is trapped in a quagmire of uncertainty; neither nurturing/suffocating/enduring mother nor out and out tease. There is no real conflict evident in her between whom she would prefer more (her son or her new lover).

But where the film really falls flat is in the dynamic between the eponymous Cyrus and the new love interest of John. Viewing trailers and reading reviews for this, you would mistakenly believe that a slapstick, cruel, vindictive and psychological war would ensue between them in their attempts to get Marisa Tomei's attention. Think something that you would see in Frasier (the spats between the siblings Frasier and Niles).

But no, Cyrus never really becomes the malevolent child-demon he had so much potential to become, and nor does John become the sneaky and child-hating person he could have become. The 'war' between the two never erupts and never feels truly believable. The worst act Cyrus can seemingly inflict is hiding a pair of shoes??? Come on!!!

This film had an awful lot of potential, but never utilises it. Never truly finds momentum, and it strains to raise a grin, let alone a laugh.

Poor, poor stuff. Nothing to really recommend it at all.

1/10 (1 mark awarded for being only 90 mins long or so; well, that's as long as I lasted before walking out)

I went to see Cyrus on thursday and disagree strongly with what you have said.
Given the directors style and aim, i didn't expect too have a load of attempts at laugh-out-loud moments like a typical Will Ferrel film.
I didn't expect them to go down the predictable route of over the top acts against each other.

I really enjoyed the dialogue and for the most part how the movie went. i'd give it a 7/10.

I think the Duplass brother's are onto something and when they get one of their films right, i think they'll have ridiculous success.

*When i say right, i mean when the get this style perfected.

Agreed Gerty, I though Cyrus was good, it's dark humour though, so don't expect Stepbrothers type of stuff.
I though the leads were great too.

I think the trailer for it suggests it's something different.

I really liked Cyrus too - a small but effective film. As you said, the goal isn't for laugh out loud comedy. The Duplasses aim to create something with a bit more bite: films that are grounded and character based. Personally, I think the cast made it almost impossible to market correctly - I think people could be forgiven for expecting a goofy comedy due to the presence of Hill and Reilly (who, of course, has done his fair share of serious material but his comedy roles seem to dominate recently). I went expecting a Duplass Brothers film and was very impressed at how they retained their style within a more mainstream system. However, the presence of a few typecast actors - who both do surprisingly well, especially Hill whose usual obnoxious image is cleverly dissected and explored in the film - suggests something it actually isn't. It's as good as the other Duplass Brothers films (although Baghead is that little bit better and more inventive) and personally I was delighted to see them breaking through to a bigger audience: their character focused and acutely observed films provide a welcome change of pace to your typical Jonah Hill vehicle!

I'm not a huge fan of actors of the ilk of Jonah Hill/John C. Reilly (and contemporaries of them such as Will Ferrell, Seth Rogen et al) and I don't like their style of comedy.

I went into this film expecting to see intelligent, dark comedy. Not the usual goofiness of the aforementioned actors.

I didn't even get the comedy. It never picked up for me. Never once made me laugh. Didn't keep me amused. I failed to see what the great appeal of it was, failed to see how so many can find it funny or amusing and I really fail to see what was so special about it.

    Just my opinion is all.

Rented it out tonight,a really powerful movie.I will be buying myself a copy of this one,as this is one for the collection. Not to be missed IMO.

Chinese director Lu Chuan wrenches the 1937 Rape Of Nanking from historical footnote to cinematic headliner in this black-and-white depiction of the Sino-Japanese War’s most notorious incident. Victorious Japanese troops, the idealistic Kadokawa (Hideo Nakaizumi) apart, march into China’s capital with brutality in mind, raping and murdering on a barely believable scale.

The unfolding events are portrayed with great skill by Chuan, who spares us none of the horror, depositing the viewer in a disorientating maelstrom of violence that recalls Saving Private Ryan and Klimov’s Come And See in its ferocity. Unsanitised and at times almost unwatchable, it burns off the screen.

Just watched Foxfire there on TV. 1996 movie about a gang of girls. It's one of those coming of age movies, certainly not everyones cup of tea but I really really enjoyed it.

Good performance from Angelina Jolie. Nice Sunday night find :)

    Get Him To The Greek.

Watched this last night, not very good at all. Diddy's character is the funniest thing in it to be honest.

Found Forgetting Sarah Marshall quite entertaining so thought this might be ok but it just wasn't very funny at all. Russell Brand isn't too bad, Jonah Hill kind of stumbles through it, Elisabeth Moss is wasted in it, and Colm Meaney shouldn't have bothered.

It has a few laughs but overall quite disappointing.

Four Lions - Was not expecting this. Hilarious, thought provoking, sad, entertaining. What a great film.

The Other Guys - Not as bad as I thought it would be. Mark Wahlberg is good and Will Ferrell being Will Ferrell is bearable in this one.

Ironman 2 - action action action...great film, i think i prefer the first one though. I like the way the little bits here and there are pointing towards an avengers film (even though i never heard of these before ironman...i didn't read comics when i was younger)

Clash of the Titans (2010) - not much good - not a patch on the original which i grew up with. the whole thing just seems kinda pointless...

Un Prophet - French film charting the rise of a young lad through the ranks into world of crime whilst in jail (and sometimes out). Was very good - seemed to go on forever though.

Scream - great fun, great film... Loved it as a kid, when it was something of a 'forbidden' film in my house (mother hates horror movies and so on), so I always watched it when I got the chance. Positively tame compared to some films out there, but still a great film to watch with the lights off and the phone next to you...
