Things I want..

In our fair city we have many things... but here are some things I want that will make our city a better place. This thread may not last long, but I'll feel better clearing my head.

    - Doctors that don't charge €55 because those days of screwage are over.

    - Rugby matches in the RSC. I like rugby a lot. I like sitting down.. a lot..

    - Local rugby teams to start tag rugby teams for the softer built folk like me.

    - A return to the old standard of blaas. Superquinn just aren't cutting it.

    - Drivers to stop trying to kill me when I signal to turn right on the newtown roundabout on my bike.

    - A winebar with light nibbles on the Dunmore road

    - Someone to bulldoze the silver thing, and the black thing, in JR Square.

    - A load of little cafe bars in JR Square with outside seating and umbrellas with little partitions.

    - Gardai to stop our resident thick heads from pishin on the said umbrellas.

    - Sun in the sunny south east

    - Minister Harney to take her greedy paws off St. Patrick's Hospital. Leave the seniors alone and in peace. They deserve that much.

    - TDs who will email back the people who voted them in.

    - Marks and Spencer to open outside of town, and inside of town once it doesn't feel like a walk through Bulgaria.

    - The Waterford - Galway flight to be reinstated

    - A Cream Egg.

That'll be all for now.

What do you want from our underestimated and underperforming city?

    - Somewhere decent to play poker

    - A pub the way what geoffs used to be before all the pretentious gits started going there

    - cheaper parking in the city centre

-"How do" given the key to the city

    - Sully and Cabaal to handle the waterford crystal dispute by threating site Bans

    - Waterford Utd to be given the same support as waterford Hurlers

    - Somewhere you can sit down and eat when pissed

    - A HMV/Game/Arcade/Casino to open in town.

We have a Casino in Waterford. An arcade was refused planning permission on the quay IIRC.

Ah ya I'm talking more in the Las Vegas sense man, AFAIK the place down by the park is members only or someting.

Arcade would be savage alright. I think in some ways I always be 15 and in Freddies

    I would like:

    - Proper radiotherapy unit in WRH.

    - WIT to finally be upgraded to university status because ti's deserved it for over five years now!

    - (Relating to the two previous points) To not be ignored like some backwater town by the government and have some decent TDs to represent us.

    - A new pub to open that isn't all flashy blue and purple lights! One that caters to people over the age of 21 who want to be able to go in and have a few drinks and be able to hear each other speak. One that bans all the pretentious gits that Ziedth mentioned!

    - A reason for people to go into town! Any reason!

    - New estates to be built with more green areas like I had growing up in Hillview. The kids from these new estates actively encouraged to go out and play soccer or whatever on the aforementioned greens.

    - A music venue that would attract decent acts. Nothing world-beating but just decent acts. And for that venue to be supported by the people of Waterford!

    - Something to lift the air of sadness that has crept over Waterford in the last 12 months or so. Just a bit of good news.

    - For Spraoi to be good craic this year. Seeing as very few of us will be able to afford holidays this year, there is an opportunity to draw bigger crowds. And this could relate to the previous point too!

Amen to that, especially the last bit. Waterford has an unfortunate reputation for being a place that does not support live music

I dunno what you guys think of this idea but my niece was telling me last night that there's now a big stage in Oxygen Night Club to support large bands (she was in at some teenage disco last night) I haven't been in there in a long time but I suppose that place could hold about 800 and has that area upstairs which also provides a good vantage point for whoever is on stage. Anyone know if they have plans to put in big bands in there?

I heard in the gym they were closing it down and reopening 10.

AFAIKIts just for the bands that play in Rubys Lounge, as they are not having LIVE music in Rubys lounge anymore, but they are moving them to Oxygen. It willl take a lot of work to re-open Ten which wont be happening anytime soon.Electric Ave have some of the best Live Music going on around the town, hardly need another venue doing the same thing, do we.some posts above hit the nail on the head.Waterford needs to be supporting their venue's or they will be left with very few

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

lol I don't know where you got that from. On the Munster Express this week it said that Ruby Lounge is now going 7 nights a week with its live music. That's hardly stopping music now is it?

The quays to be made into a proper boardwalk - all those car parks closed, trees planted, coffee kiosks and benches installed.

That hideous blue crane (our industrial heritage!) on the quays to topple into the water.

    Some decent public art

Agreed, a HMV would be great. I hate buying DVDs and stuff in Waterford, you have to go check 2 or 3 small mediocre places instead of just having one good decent pit stop.

    I still like Geoff's :)

Wasn't it the green areas around Hillview where a young boy was murdered in the 80s? Back when small children were encouraged to go out with no parental supervision.

That is a horrible incident that nobody from Waterford wnats to be reminded of. That is only your second post, the first of which was also trying to pick a fight. I suggest you move along.

I'd agree with nearly every suggestion posted above. The only thing I would say is - relating to the alleged posers in Geoffs, wasn't the fact that Geoffs welcomed everyone from well dressed posers to not-so-bothered rockers and grungers what made it special? A kind of all embracing place.

Yes it is. Where are the bands on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in Ruby's Lounge coming from? Muldoon's. Which is now closed on Mondays and Tuesdays to force people into that s**t hole. Muldoon's may be crap too but it's a much better option for live music.

Think Muldoons is a disaster myself. What kind of shape does that place have? Muldoons/Oxygen needs money spent on it desperately.

    - No more housing estates, greens and big gardens. Only streets, no greens, small gardens and big well-tended public parks.

    - Car parking gone off the quay and into new multi-stories, and the quay to be redeveloped as Waterford's #1 asset (again!).

    - North Quays to be redeveloped ala north quays plan circa 2003.

    - Newgate st. development to get built, open and transform the city centre so that it is the centre of life for all Waterfordians again.

    - Green routes to be opened and bus routes to be synchronized + one ticket for all trips, ala current proposed plan plus some more.

    - Out of town comparison shopping to be banned forever, ala current council stance. (One location for all comparison shopping, i.e. the city centre, so that everyone can reach the shops and only one walk/bus/car/bike trip is required.)

    - Waterford crystal pension to be taken up by government and proper management to continue (at a minimum) a 350+ work force to produce specialist crystal items and run a successful tour operation.

    - WIT to have its shackles removed and allowed to progress to university status.

    - A few more cafes to open in the city centre and 3+ to remain open until at least 9pm and later at the weekend.

    I could go on... :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 124 ✭✭Phsyche

    Cheaper parking in city centre.

Decent youth centres with proper equipment installed to keep kids off the streets.

Restaurants with a babysitting corner where you can leave your kid while you're enjoying your meal. (Like the one in Milano's in IFSC, Dublin)

    Dog park.

Cafe's that stay open late for over 21's.

That is true in all fairness to them and this is just my opinion by the way but I used to drink in there alot back when I started college up untill say before they extended it and I used to love it but whenever I go in there now I just sense this air of superiority from the place. Kinda like some places in Temple Bar up in Dublin.

I dunno i'm prob very wrong.

And therein lies the problem. I did agree Muldoon's is crap but I would still prefer it to the lounge myself.

Anyway back on topic. I would agree completely with almost all the suggestions so far. Dunno about a HMV though. I really, really like BPM.

    -Plus no more f**king apartments.

-The area at Railway Square beside the old City Wall tidied up after the "redevelopment".

-The walkway down along the river by Cherrymount is nice but can we please get the lights fixed? *

*If anyone knows who is responsible for them, I would be quite happy to give them a ring.

How about Geoffs start to show some respect for customers by providing something better than 3rd world standard toilets. The downstairs for men are filthy and like an open sewer by 10pm and I'm told the ladies are an absolute disgrace, no seats, paper etc

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,943 ✭✭✭abouttobebanned

Geoffs just don't spend money on anything. They have a superior attitude and don't believe in spending a penny to get customers because everyone in this town already kneels at the alter that is "geoffs"

To be honest, I'd probably feel the same myself if i owned the place.

Assuming they are public lighting they are usually marked by a number so you can call ESB and report a fault with the lights. 1850 372772 :)

Tho if they are out a while and its all of them, a visit to your local councillor might help as I would assume somebody has already reported them. Remember the whole issue with the lights on the ORR?

Geoffs doesn't need to spend money on anything. The place is grand the way it is. (They could fix the hand drier (for good) in the downstairs guy's toilet, but otherwise it's fine.) All things considered it's the best pub in Waterford (since Downses closed half the pub). Waterford has hardly any decent pubs left since the Rogue changed the name and became a ****hole, Egans closed down, the Stand closed down, etc. Of course the place is popular.

I never encountered a superior attitude in there, then again, I'm one of those people who might go in earlier, order a coffee and read a book, so maybe that makes me one of the so-called 'superior' Geoffs set... I've only ever found the place comfortable, the music good, the staff sound -- albeit a bit image conscious -- and so on. They have a great set-up in there.

Some good points there, I used to really have some laugh in "Temple Bar" all those years ago. We always used to go in there starting off the night for a chat and Darts/Pool. The lack of pubs such as you mentioned is a little concerning the city seems to be moving towards "Trendy" spots ala Harveys(Where I go I must Admit) and Reveloutions.

Going into Geoffs early and ordering a coffee was not what I was refering too anyway in terms of the attitude. Its more of a "vibe" and like I said in a previous post the only other place I can use as an example are one of those ****hole pubs in temple bar in Dublin where trendy people goto Slum it.

You have go to be kidding if you believe the toilets in Geoffs do not need to be changed. No doubting its a good pub but the complete lack of respect for customers by having them use those toilets is disgraceful. Lack of comeptetion allows places to get away with appalaing standards such as those toilets. In fairness it's not like they cant afford it.

Nothing is worse than the toilets in Harveys. I rejoiced (slight over-exaggeration there) when the smoking ban came in and I could wear the same jeans the following day. Now, if I use the toilets in Harveys, I have to throw the jeans in the wash due to the three-inch piss-line on the end of my legs. They're a flipping disgrace!

There's one cubicle downstairs, which is maybe a mess, I don't know, I don't use it. Go upstairs if you want luxury, where unless things have changed, the toilets are fine. TMI anyone? :)

Also, have you tried informing the staff about the condition of the toilets? I've found them pretty responsive when you have a problem. If a few people complained they'd probably do something about it.

add to whats already been mentioned:

-that little french bakery to open up again, the one that used to be on John Street. I miss their danishes.

    -for ginos to do deliveries

-a few more decent clothes shops like H&M, Zara, make top shop bigger..tho if a new shopping centre opens on newgate st, that might resolve that

-for iarnrod eireann to get their act together and finally get rid of those old trains for waterford. I travel from Dublin to waterford a lot, and only occasionally have i ended up on the new ones. Really annoying as i only ever see the old trains at the Waterford line too...all the other places have had the new trains for ages now.

    what about Egans to reopen.........

    No tolls on new bridge.......

Better mobile coverage on the Dunmore rd......

    More WIFI hotspots in town........

    Better use City sq.........

Somewhere you can buy vinyl records.......

    River racing.........

I would like to be able to drive from reginalds tower to the bridge in the left hand lane without any obstructions in the way, ie. gimps abandoning there cars to run into shops, mostly around centra. Would love to be a traffic warden for the day...

Seeming as wishlists need not be realistic.....

I'd like to see some coordinated action to make use of the fact our city centre is relatively small. What I mean by this is development of all of the areas below to provide many varied amenities:

    1)the north quays

    2)the south quays

    3) the area where waterford stanley used to be (call it the west quays to keep the theme running)

4)that whole area that was(or is?) going to be the newgate development

    5) john roberts square to be given a makeover

if a load of varied shops (some popular chains, some one offs), entertainment amenities (along the lines of brunos in Cork for example), restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs(bars serve cocktail, pubs serve pints), good quality, relatively cheap accomodation (for visitors) the city could have a stab at boosting tourism, getting money in, and not being seen as a backwater as was rightly mentioned above. and there might be something to do in the town after 5 o clock.

considering each and every development i mentioned has individually had to battle the huge amount of naysayers in this town, im not hopeful. (aside: could someone tell all those naysayers big is not necessarily bad, and old is more likely to mean crap than historic)

away from the city centre issue, id like WIT to get the university status it deserves as mentioned earlier.

also, increase the amount of big live music acts coming into waterford, also already mentioned.

ps this was supposed to be a one or two line post :pac:

Waterford Crystal to sort their problems --- move to a new huge show room on the north quays - windows facing the clock tower -
with a pedestrain bridge over to it

WIT to be upgraded to university status - with a new phase of it to be built on the north quays -

link these 2 new developments with a luas type statem - from north quays - up bridge st - yellow road - paddy browns road - wit - cork road - south quays and back - this will reinvigorate the city centre for food/shopping/nightlife

New gate st centre to be built asap

waterford stanley 32 storey tower to be built - would look like an icon for waterford

the quay side to become grassed - park land like Chicago - lots of art/sculpuure - waterfountain - kiosk cafes

"farmers" market for john roberts sq every fri & sat 9-2pm -
get the centre alive again - 40+ stall with quality food - breads - crafts -
maybe arts market on a sunday

somthing to do in town on the weekends besides get hammered and go out to some dive of a club, the cinema is grand once and a while but not all the time

tax incentives for one off shops, so we can actully get a positive ratio of empty to used shops

to stop making the town look like a doughnut with nothing in the middle

get rid of mcDonalds out of the square, although that will never ever happen, it would be a nice entrance to a car park : P

oh yeah and id say everybody already knows about the letter that was sent to the city manager, i think, about the state of the square and how dangerous it is when its wet, just incase anyone didnt. I have the leter, its pretty funny

I'm sure I have an exhaustive list at the back of my mind, but for now:

As I've said before, an informal steakhouse like Bennigans, Chilis or TGIs. This city badly needs one. You go from the extravagant places like Chez Ks to low-rank places like Eddie Rocketts, but nothing in between.

Also, the supporting piles under the north wharf could do with a paint job. Anytime I drive by Reginald's Tower, I look over and see just how dark they are. A good bright colour would bring life to that area.
