ya was wondering to myself are the fold down something i'd need or like, and are not so much a need. one thing about murphy is that he is local to me, which is a big plus too i suppose. but tuff mac seem nice trailer too. gone off ifor, think they not built as strong as they once were, but that is just my opinion. hundson seem the bizz too but didnt look at any with decks yet.

Just to declare no connection to Jim

He is 35 miles from me and in the wrong county come championship
But he is a Local business producing a good product employing a few people up there in tuam

I bought a new nugent 12 by 6 2 years ago with sheep decks in the north. 6250 inc vat. I'm sorry I didn't go the few bob and get the ifor Williams to be honest. Decking system is crude by comparison.

Lads thinking about trading in my 12x6 ifor williams for a 14ft tri-axle keen on the hudson but was looking at a tuff mac i know you pay for what you get but can any one tell me more about them....plus can anyone tell me are you better with a big wheel or the smaller wheel and what both trailers are like to pull loaded and unloaded

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 254 ✭✭willfarmerman

Big wheels I would say. Much steadier and the small tyres are forever getting bumped busted and twisted. You want a plenty of horses in front of a 14 if you are filling with big cattle.

Thinking strongly for a 2nd hand ivor 12x5'10, decks would nice. If we got a trailer without, could you add later or do you have to buy all at start

The newer ones are all factory fitted from day one as the back door is spring loaded for decks, not sure about older ones.

Thought I saw a few new type trailers without the spring loaded ramp

I'm guessing you can put in ordinary decks to them at any stage, but if you want the "easy load" system that fold away then their factory fitted on day one.

just bringing this one back up again. I'm looking at buying a new cattle box 12foot, no trade in

is it better buy in North or South ie any VAT issues. Also I must admit the more questions I have asked about different makes the more confused I'm getting as everyones box seems to be the best. From your experience which box is best to tow & life time ie Williams, Hudson, Nugent, Tuffmac or Murphys

I looked at a few second hands but there does not seem to be value so I'll go all in for a new one

Have a 12' Murphy (tuam). Find it a great trailer and would hardly notice pulling it behind the car. Would recommend it.

    What's in the trailer though?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

If your doing a lot of trailer work I'd pick the ifor Williams. Very smooth on the road and hold their value. Only down side is the jack. Can't keep the thing locked up off the road with the way it's held in place

This is an old thread, since my last post here I bought a 12 ft ifor, land rover wheels, it's probably older than some of the posters on here, haggled hard with a salesman, got it for less than 1k.

Had almost 2 ton of bulls in it last week, no bother, I took my time though. All I put on it so far is 2 tyres and a wheel bearing. I don't know what the new ones are like. AFAIK the only ones to avoid are the DP120 with the small wheels underneath.

We're looking at a new tri axel double deck sheep trailer. Our one at the moment is a 01 tri axel but we went for the 1 with small wheels because you can fit more sheep into it. Had no problems with it since we bought new and it has a lot of miles travelled. I think the new ones are up near 7k. Did any of ye have any dealings with the lad selling them in roscommon? ?

We have a DP120 and find it a great yoke. Never had any problems with it .
They are known to be top heavy/more inclined to tip over and not great in wet ground.
For us its a multipurpose trailer, throw off the body and its a flat trailer/ car transporter with a checkerplate floor and plated to 3.5ton as well
The father likes it as the wheels are underneath and out of the way, going through gaps there is no need to be watching out for the wheels/tyres/mudguards.
If you meet anyone on a narrow road there is less chance them getting caught up in the wheel.
Plus there us also the extra floor space, If cattle are packed tight in a normal trailer the same cattle have loads of space in a DP.

Is it hard to get the cattle body back on? Have heard of the body being bent by cattle and then doesn't line up properly.

I know what you are saying about being handy etc. I have a 14ft beavertail as well for all that stuff, car transport, meal and timber.

Never have any problems getting it back on. We have the trailer for about 8 or 9 years at this stage bought second hand as well
Drop the body back on, move it about a bit with a tyre lever and six bolts all line up perfect on mine.
There isnt full time work here for a cattle box and a flat trailer so it suits us.
I'd say it could get annoying putting it on and off a few times a week though

Spoke with my uncle over weekend and he mentioned that nugent was a harder pull than hudson. Nugent looks a good box and may be even stronger than williams

Have to agree, find the nugent a heavy trailer to tow. Hard on the towing vehicle. Personally if I was looking to buy, I wouldn't look any further then aerlite (Murphy tuam ), Or an Ifor.

Has anyone here ever heard of a Joyce box? The uncle swears by them and I've never seen them in my life, been to many a summer show and the majority of boxes were ifor williams and never a sign of a Joyce box!

With new regs I can have around 850kgs in the trailer and car pulls it fine. Any bigger load is for the tractor.

I'm a fan of the Tuffmac trailer. I see a dealer around here with one and it gets some goin. Still a fresh trailer. He traded it in a bought another Tuffmac.
I think you're paying for a name with IW.

I have just bought..I went with williams I will have delivery next weekend. Ironically I bought in Kilkenny as he was 500 better than lad at the end of my road less than a mile away. I said to local dealer what is best you can do off list as I would prefer to buy local..50 euro max was his response... now there will be a new box passing his gate which is a pity.. Thanks for comments .
