I think maybe there should have a sort of laissez faire forum (anything goes and no moderation) and let it run for a few days to see how things would pan out. Should be fun too.
Does anyone remember the David Icke thread from a couple of years ago?
The thread ran for about a week and had six or seven hundred posts in it.

At the time Karoma was still a mod. I can't remember who else was modding AH at the time. Could have been Dudess and Giblet.

We decided to take a week off from modding. All we did was delete the obvious stuff. Porn spam and the like.
The main thing that week was the Icke thread and it was a classic. We allowed people to say pretty much anything they wanted and didn't ban them.
If anyone went too far we just deleted the posts.

A couple of people did take the piss, but nothing too serious happened.
We went back to modding properly after 4 days and I think only one or two people actually noticed that we hadn't been banning people and such.

The thing is, that was 2 years ago.
AH has doubled in size since then.
If you look at the default thread cut off near the top and change it to 10 days (the old default cut off), you'll see what I mean.

We used to have 8 or 9 pages of threads over a ten day period and the stickies appeared on every page.
Now we have 18 or 19 pages over ten days and the stickies are only on page 1.

It's just not viable for us to sit back and do nothing. The place would be chaotic for a week and would then die because most people would just get a pain in their arses coming in here and just seeing memes and abuse in every post.

Most posters on AH will have something to contribute, even if you have to be patient to find it.
And some are clearly working on an agenda of being a f*cking nuisance.
They should be f*cked off out of it a lot quicker, imho.

I don't think we'd have too many resigning in protest because an obvious baiter got banned.

There are an awful lot of Stickies at the moment. I know there are announcemets to be made but does there really need to be so many.

I realise that the argument is that there shouldn't be as much need to be as many stickies, and I agree.

It seems lately that there seems to be a lot more people on After Hours, and this inevitable increases the mod requirements. I'm not even here a year and it seems to have grown massively in that short a time, with trolling and idiocy increasing at a higher rate than the footfall.

Is there any figures to back up how much the footfall has increased in the last year?

Good point I hate too many goddamn stickies.
I have released the welcome to sharpshooter sticky because of the addition of the current Michael Jackson sticky.
Any other warnings may be stickied temporarily and are subject to change.

I just wanted to say that having a Michael Jackson death JOKES thread was an utter disgrace and very ill judged. Thankfully it's been gotten rid of but whoever had the bright idea to start it in the first place should be ashamed of themselves. To think that the official boards.ie line on the death of Jackson was to create a jokes thread...I always thought this place had a bit more class than some of the darker recesses on the net but maybe I was wrong and it's just as bad as the rest.

A JOKE thread to mock the death of a person who many people here have grown up listening to, boards.ie reached an all time low.

Discussed. Brainstormed. Monitored closely. Deleted. People want to pay their respects. Others want to share jokes. Many others.
I don't feel particularly ashamed for starting it.

Some people read the sun & the star (many people say AH is the internet version of them!).
Personally, I don't read them. But sometimes you have to accept that a majority do like their current events served up in that way.

I don't envy the mods having to allow a degree of dubious taste comments in one thread, and have to be stricter on another.
If the rules were to be consistent, the line would have to be drawn lower, and that's to no-one's benefit.
Some threads you just shouldn't read. The MJ joke thread was that way for you, others have been that way for me.

I think it was actually a success. It kept the real thread relatively honest and joke free and gave people an outlet for the inevitable bile that comes with such an era defining moment as MJ's death.

Plus I'd say it was easier deleting one thread than sieving through the proper thread looking for inappropriate comments

I dont like the way AH becomes a circus whenever someone quite famous dies. Having a condolences thread is fine, but any tasteless jokes and the like should really only have a place in Lolocaust. I dont think it does Boards any favours given the increasing amount of media recognition that the site is getting. I dont think it would be too unrealistic to imagine that the Michael Jackson story would attract a lot of attention, and a thread titled Michael Jackson Death jokes or something like that could turn people away. Dont get me wrong, I have a wicked sense of humour myself (Lolocaust is a fantastic forum) but I think these types of jokes should be kept there.

Maybe these threads should be moved to the show biz forum straight away, i know the current one cant be, but in future (and as long as sh1t falls from arses) there will be more of these threads.

These threads are always in relation to a celebrity, and as such are a 'tribute' to that individual. The 'tribute' always turns into a discussion over that person, and that's where the problem is. It inevitably turns into a ball of crap.

Maybe the mods of AH should put the skids under these threads as quick as possible and move them on? Then again, the whole point of AH is that anything that cant be pigeon holed directly into another forum is discussed there.

Maybe create a dead celebrity forum for the bleeding heart society to come out in force. :D

If it was in the show biz forum it would need another 5 mods to keep an eye on things.

AH is fine for major events.

I was like a kid at christmas this morning waiting to open AH and enjoy the commentary on the death of Jackson. I know it would be one of the few places where I would be able to avoid sycophantic eulogies at the passing of someone who frankly irritated annoyed and scared me in equal measures.
However, what I think about Jackson is not the issue here, it's about the response of AH to the news of a death. I for one applaud the ability of people to laugh at this. I might not always agree with what is said here but I am so very very glad that we at least have somewhere that allows people to say what they mean (usually).

"Era defining moment"? Sorry Quazzie, I liked and agreed with most of your post but that just made me giggle. :)

As for reaching an all time low - I think not. I think it's time to realise and accept that everyone in the world does not share the same views and values.

There is a view that has become popular over the last few decades after being written about in a story called "Speaker for the Dead". It's where someone recites the life of the deceased, does not gloss over the distasteful aspects, does not play up the shining aspects of it, simply recites how that life was lived. I think AH with it's Joke and it's Respect threads has allowed that to happen, albit in an exagerated form, and I think THAT is a remarkable achievment.

I have long held the belief that anyone who dies and leaves young children behind is untouchable for a certain amount of time after their passing.

I do not want those children googling their parent's name in 5 years time and finding a thread full of sick jokes made around the time of their parent's death.

I didn't make any MJ jokes but if you can't handle jokes made by people you didn't even know then the jokes are probably the least of your worries

  • Registered Users Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

    Ooh. Feisty.

I actually find some of the jokes quite funny, but you obviously misread my post and took a chance at having a dig at me.

My personal feelings have nothing to do with my moderating in this case.

True enough, however it is sad though that somebodys death is categorised as a 'major event,' reflective of the tabloid mentality in todays world.

Its an emotive subject though, and i dont envy any moderator having to keep the peace on a thread like that. Its not a condolence thread, and i fail to see the efficacy of it, seems rather pointless tbh, no more then the Jade Goody thread, it turns into slagging/point scoring match between the pro and anti side.

Total waste of time because judgement or informed discussion is clouded by strong emotions.

    That be my tuppence worth!:D

Err, thats why i suggested that the thread be moved out of AH.
