A mid 90's s-class that went into production in 1991 is as safe and modern as a 01 Citroen C5?

I don't get the irrational hatred of the C5 just because it's a "C5". It has a fantastic suspension, comfortable interior, decent engine and plenty of toys. I'm not sure I'd pay that much for one, but I don't see why people dismiss it instantly either. Same with the 607
Possibly not, but I wouldnt say it was far off.

Perhaps i'm biased considering I have an intense dislike for most french cars (bar the citroen XM), but I cant see how anyone would pick a citroen costing almots 1300E p/a in tax over an S-Class for similar money. Be it an 01 or a 98, its a car your buying not a registration plate.

And similarly it's a car you're buying, not a badge.

Nice car, looks mint. Interesting colour too. And a V8.

Pity about the lack of NCT, the tow bar and the price being high.

A nice car, but that's more than twice what it's worth.

It is a 300E, not an E300 and has the front headlamps, rear lamps, bumpers and the engine bonnet replaced from a newer model.
    Good price, though.

Cheap estate can be had for 700 euro, I was interested in it myself as a run around but its too far to look at for me. Always worried abot cars that have had a waterpump and thermostat replaced, stinks of overheating maybe. What do yee think?

I would consider those parts to be consumables, especially given the average mileage and age of the cars in this price range. Actually, with certain cars, I'd be more confident to see that some of the coolant system has been overhauled.

Ya maybe your right, I personally never changed a healthy waterpump unless I was changing the timing belt and thats a push rod engine in that skoda.

Ya they are a very reliable and simple, they must have regular service or serious sludge will take hold. Headgaskets are another area of concern. On the whole totally reliable but bargain basement transport. It says in the add its a Mpi but I dont think they came that early. The MPi has an uprated head on it but still simple. The reason Vw kept the pushrod engine was that they hadn't anything better at the time. To survive skoda had to be reliable and this engine was capable of that.

17 months NCT for 375 Euro

    http://www.adverts.ie/car/saxo/saxo/bargain-citroen-saxo-with-17-months-nct/508223

Needs a front indicator lens and a bit of kurust on the back and that'll do it until you throw it away in 17 months

A month ago that car was up for E950, then advertised it twice for E500, then E450. Give it a week and you might get it even cheaper!

Fresh NCT but road tax disc looks like it's been out over a year from the 2008 on the top. It would nearly be worth buying just for the comfort of putting the seats in your living room :D

Doesn't matter. New owner only owes tax from when he buys it. That's a lot of luxobarge for €800 with 25 months NCT

Yes it's the sitting around for a year or more not being on the road that bothers me.

I'd hazard a guess that it was driven during that time, just not taxed.

On a €800 car that has just passed an NCT? Really? It's not ceased up, the brakes and tyres are fine and the battery and alternator must be ok. Even if the engine had not been run for two years, it's running now. Maybe it has some electrical issues, but who cares?

And as Eoin said, chances are it's been driving around, just without tax. You'd be surprised how poor motor tax compliance is in Ireland, especially outside the Dublin area. Last time I was in Mayo, I had a quick look around a few car parks and half the cars weren't taxed. If I were Mr Kenny, I know where I should start gathering revenue :D
