I'll be picking up a Semogue Owners Club 2 band badger. I've heard good things about the Semogue badger brushes so I'm going to try on out.

http://www.vintagescent.com/ are promoting their yearly 'discount day', this November 20th.

    Details below.

Is there a discount code for this? The discount isn't appearing automatically when I go to place an order.

Just recently got one of these myself, costing €65. It took me about 4 or 5 shaves to get the hang of it and break it in, in comparison with my previous (cheaper) brush. It feels really sturdy and weighty in the hand and overall just find that the handle is designed perfectly for use.

But now that I have, I find it excellent and beautifully crafted piece of kit, well worth the money. Though, I wish I had have seen this one before I got the one I have. Just due to it's beautiful looks...

    All of the products should have 20% off automatically. Here is what i see when I put a brush into the cart;

You can see 20% has been removed (it's €52 before VAT normally). The fact we are in Europe means we still have to pay VAT so this sale pretty much just removes VAT for Europeans. It's much better value for anyone outside of Europe but is still a pretty good sale .

I've got the boar version of that Semogue. It's certainly beefy but I'm undecided on the brush overall. If I knew then what I know now I reckon I would have got the Owners Club badger brush.

I got this Owners Club one and I will admit that I love it.

At the same time I moved from the Merkur Progress to the Muhle R41 open comb razor, which again I find to be a very different shaving experience that's taking a few shaves to come to terms with.

But good all round. next year I will make the change to shavette/straight razor... hopefully :)

Looks like the 20% discount is only on brushes.

I was looking at buying a bottle of Floid and a tube of 444 Balm but they don't show any discount.

I know what it is now (I recehecked the details). It's every product that is over €10 before VAT has a 20% discount.

    Thanks.

I think I'll still buy them, the Floid is a very good price even without the 20% discount.

Yeah, it's probably the cheapest you'll find online.

Looking to pick up starter safety razor kit for around €50. Any Christmas deals out there?

4men.ie now do some Bluebeards Revenge stuff. Their scimatar double edged razor looks good, you can get it in this gift box with a brush, shave cream and stand.

    Decent review here

Cheers, I couldn't find that link the other day. Chris should have that link, 'out of its category' and higher up the selection list.

Lovely selection of stainless steel products, drool.

I just love the super matt finish of the Titan, if I could justify the purchase, it would be gliding through stubble before Christmas arrives..

Check the Weber razors. Half the price of the Ikons and I use my Weber a lot more than my Ikon.

:o I've been meaning to include a starter kit graphic on the front page for too long. Once I get over this killer flu and feel human again I will have to get on to it.

I have been testing the Titan H1 as my main shaver and it is a seriously aggressive razor. The maker is releasing 2 milder base plates so soon there will be the choice of the M1 (Mild) and the R1 (Regular). I think I will be taking a step down to the R1 base plate when available. For a first release it is a cracking effort.

For me though the iKon is a personal favourite and I am pretty excited with their roadmap for the future especially with the announcement of a Slant for 2013. The current line up is constantly being tweaked and improved also.

With makers like Webber, PILS and Feather also on the scene and with enough interest hopefully they will become more affordable in the future.

Just hoping you lovely people might be able to expand a post I saw in another thread:
On a scale of enjoyment, performance and bad-assery:
    Electric (worst)
    Cartridge + Goo
    Cartridge + Soap/Cream
    Safety + Soap/Creme
Straight(cut-throat) (Bestest most badass way to shave)

And hitemfrank's suggestion of using a knife. :D

Where would a shavette come into this list? I'm tempted to pick one up before I think about investing in an expensive straight.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,909 ✭✭✭hitemfrank

From what I've read, shavettes will teach you the basic technique for using a straight razor but because they use DE blades they are more unforgiving than a straight razor.

Also investing in a straight razor doesn't have to be that expensive. Over at whippeddog.com you can get a starter kit for $65 (about €50) delivered. You get a shave ready straight razor and a strop kit. If you decide it's not for you, you can even get a refund on the straight razor.

Just remember that it might not be the prettiest of straight razors you get. Here is the razor I got from him when I started out using a straight razor. It's got some cosmetic issues but shaves great.

Have to agree the website sucks and their stock flys out.
Do a search on weber razors and you'll see two trends,
They are great razors especially at their price point
    Everyone is looking for stock.

    Mantic's take on them

Was thinking of getting my dad a razor kit for Xmas http://www.shaving.ie/products/The-Basic-Essentials-Safety-Razor-Starter-Kit.html

What is the difference between the razors I can choose for this set?

The Edwin Jagger and the Muhle both share the same head. I have the Edwin Jagger and I must say, it's a nice razor and ideal for a beginner. It is very forgiving and out of the box it looks fantastic.
I have no experience of the other two razors I'm afraid.

I wouldn't worry too much about it.
I'm quite a clumsy and prone to injuring myself but I have yet to do more than give myself a tiny nick and that was only because I stopped paying attention round my adams apple.
Take the plunge and once you get into a routine with lathering and different passes its a breeze.

The only thing I miss about the cartridges is the speed, but to be fair one pass would leave me presentable but its hard to resist getting it a bit smoother.

I had my first hot-towel shave last weekend, in the UK. It was not a good experience. It left me with a couple of stubbly areas, and sore patches which got worse a few hours later. The only reason I did it was that I had to fly with f***ing Ryanair so I couldn't afford to bring my own razor.

I get a smoother and much more gentle shave with my Merkur 15C and a Feather blade.

Was contemplating getting a straight for a while but concluded that I don't have the balls required to do so. So I've been using the muhle R89 but I'm contemplating getting an adjustable. Would the Merkur Progress be a good choice?
