ditto, same here imho, but everyone seems to love their RS, so there's no telling anyone differently. :(

add to that a web based gui to manage my downloads remotely (start, stop, add, remove torrents) from work (or even my mobile phone) and there's just nothing can compare to it.

Don't think we all haven't tried torrents/newsgroups etc etc

The content available on RS with a premium account is way too big for anything to compete with it, and its so easy to find content

i imagine so, but myself an jester feel the same way about torrents. when you get used to it and know where to go and how to find what you want easily with little or no possibility of getting virus's or fake files etc. it's great but from the looks of it exactly the same statement could be made about RS too, i think it just comes down to what people are used to and what works for them.

it's the same with linux and windows, people just go with what works for them, a die hard linux fan will have no trouble at all getting wha they want out of their OS of choice, but it can be a quagmire for a windows user to find their way in linux.

    btw, love your sig. ;)

I use torrents a lot. Never used rapidshare before but would be very interested to get it. Is it as easy as signing up and using it or is there anything I should know before getting the credit card out?! Much appreciated! Thanks!!

At the end of the day - for those that have the finance ability, personally I'd recommend going with Rapidshare and a good download manager which can work for you day or night automatically or manually at certain times also as you wish it.

For those that are not so lucky to avail of the paid premium services of Rapidshare, etc torrents can't be knocked for what they do for free.

Its a preference for every user and given their own current state of system and ability/wanting to pay further, each has to go with the best they can manage.

    Its that simple.

I went from HTTP to FTP to torrents, and now to Rapidshare.

HTTP was ok, but the sites were usually based in Russia, so speeds varied.

The FTP scene was alive when I joined it, and probably still alive, but with more needing payment. Ratio FTP's were ok, but the upload list was usually filled with stuff that no-one had, so meh.

The torrent scene was good, and I could get max speeds with certain groups. However, the groups would have the latest stuff, but then within a few months, it'd become stale. My ratio was always between 1.5 and 2. The public torrents site would always be filled with fake 4GB ISO's and viruses. The few decent private ones still operating now, I'd get low speeds with them. Also, unless you knew someone in there, getting an invite was hard. Checking everyday for a "opening" of applications to the forums sucked.

With Rapidshare, I'd get max speeds. I used a free membership for a while, but found that paying had it's advantages.

I'd say torrents are still very good, providing you are part of the "good" sites. You will then get max speeds, but as I couldn't get into them, meh: there was no way I could get full speeds. Someone mentioned applications to add, delete, monitor torrents: never really looked into it. I can queue 30GB's of traffic with Flashet, limit the bandwidth so that others in the house can access the internet, and then leave it be.

Have you ever had an RS premium account?

yes, signed up for a 4 day account to try it when I was in a position where torrenting wasn't a practical option, but haven't needed it since so never renewed it and the way i have everything set up in my torrent client now with the web gui and rss feeds there really isn't anything that I want that I can't get and most of it happens automatically within minutes of it becoming available online, even when I'm sleeping so why pay extra for RS?

to be fiar, there has been one time when something I wanted wasn't available anywhere except RS and I did use it then (just the free one) but aside from that one time it's been well over a year since I've touched it and I don't see much of a need for it any time soon so I think I'll just stick with what I know works well for me for now until something better does come along, but I'm not going to get my credit card out for something that can't offer me anything that I want that I'm not already getting for free. :)

i might consider it if I ever go back to using a windows machine, but RS doesn't play overly nice with linux and BT does, so I'll stick with it for now.

just out of curiosity, what are people paying for RS these days and what do you get for your money?

Still 10GB a day for me. Starting late evening means that I won't go over the limit, as it goes into a new day.

I downloaded about 20gb in a 2 hour class a month or so ago.

That would be a first then because it's one of thee best!

Gave a look at your config.sys in safe mode. cancel any references to it at start-up in the "services section".

To clean the app out - Install it again, reboot into safe mode and un-install it from there.

does it have a plugin with a web gui that allows you to manage your downloads remotely when you're not at home?

It's HTTP downloading, no need for a plugin, Just bring your 8gb+ memory stick with you, throw in your password and download. None of that 'wait till I get home' shoite..I want my stuff now damnit!

The only downside I see to rapidshare is that not only do you pay for your premium access, but you're downloading files from people with TopSite access or those higher up in the scene. These people will gather RS points from everybody who downloads their files (including premium users) and many of them convert these points into free accounts and sell them - i.e. they're making money from 'the scene' ..a major grey area in my book.

all well and good unless you work somewhere where even a measly 100mb download will get noticed. :(

all my regular stuff gets hooked into my torrent client automatically via various rss feeds but I can manually add stuff to my queue remotely if i spot anything during the day that I like the look of and that way it's always done by the time i get home. :)

Rapidshare is the only filehost worthwhile paying for.

All the other filehosts seem to be a bit more expensive with only a fraction of the content.

When people upload stuff, they upload it to rapidshare.

    Torrents are ****.

Alot of torrent bashing here, ive been using torrents for god knows how long, not once have i had a virus or a fake torrent. All you need to do is get an invite to somewhere decent like...Well im not going to say :) Public trackers are pretty useless as they are used to hit and run.

Everything i want on a weekly basis is downloaded automaticially at full speeds. Then i just let everything seed to 2:1/3:1 ratio

Ive tried rapidshares and didnt really like it, probably because i couldn't find a decent download manager.

Newsgroups are certainly the way forward, everyone i know thats on them finds theem fantastic, but not for me. My filesharing costs me 0€ a year, and i plan on keeping it that way.

While private sites such as TL are great, unfortunately in this country with our diabolical upload speeds seeding back a couple of gigs is not a easy task, and if you leech to much without sharing or keeping a good ratio, you will be banned, I'm actually a member on a few private sites, but gave up in favour of rapidshare, rapidshare your guaranteed downloads, no "Slots" system where you must wait X hours to download, and dont have to keep a share ratio :). Also FlashGet is a fast, free download manager, compatible with rapidshare, as is Internet Download Manager, Free Download manager etc...

a lot of torrent sites have an rss feed on them (look for an orange rss logo) and mostof the major torrent clients (such as utorrent or azureus) have rss scrapers either built in or available as a plugin.

then you just spend s few minutes setting up filters to grab your regular downloads and within a few minutes of anything getting caught in the filter it will automatically be added to your queue and downloaded.

not sure about utorrent, but Azureus also has a few plugins which are able to add a http(s) front end that you can serve from your PC on any random port you like and combined with either a static ip address or dyndns redirection gives you flawless remote control without having to use something bandwidth sapping like logmein or similar sending your full desktop over the net.

i can use this http front end to add/remove/start/stop/pause torrents as and when i want.

i feel like a bible salesman in mecca. :D
