Friday: 4 Mile recovery run, in 32 mins, @8:02/mile

    Sunday: 15 Mile easy run
Not a great couple of days, as I'm on antibiotics for a busted hole in my ear-drum, and haven't been well on top of that, so should have really knocked this one to touch and done a shorter run instead. Still, it felt good to rack up a few miles, even if it was a bit of a struggle at times, particularly on the hill out of Greystones. Stopped to chat to a friend for a few minutes and the break helped a little, but still a bit of a struggle.

Finished the run in time to watch the Chicago marathon. Incredible final couple of miles. Inspirational run by Wanjiru, with a never give up attitude. Amazing stuff.

    Summary: 15 miles in 1:53, @7:31/mile

That ear thing sounds nasty, hope you re okay.

Yeah, it's not great, to be honest. May have a couple of transatlantic flights for work over the next few days which is not going to help matters.

seems a bit much alright Krusty,a mate of mine in work was running the Munich marathon today ( didnt get his result yet ) and he was aiming for around 2:28,he is doing Dublin also, part of a team...and i was asking him last week what he would do inbetween,he wont run anything longer than 5m up to the day...he said it was all he needed to stay in some sort of shape.
He is looking at 2:40ish for Dublin.

Mind yourself...you will breeze through 3:15...but not if you push to much now

    Hi Krusty,

You're way more experienced than me and I'm sure you know yourself best, but I'm with the two lads on this.

I did my first hard session 3 weeks after Edinburgh, and raced the next two weekends (4 and 5 weeks respectively), and while it all felt fine at the time, I think it caught up with me a bit later on in the summer.

I've taken a few really handy weeks now and without wanting to tempt fate I can feel things starting to click into place.

Great run in Berlin and well done yet again. Had a similar run to yours today but without the need for antibiotics, it's always tough starting back.

Thanks for the concern guys, but he legs and engine are fine. It's just the hearing that's fecked, and unfortunately no amount of mileage, high or low, is going to impact that. Today was most definitely not a hard session, and coming as it did two weeks after Berlin and two weeks before Dublin, was perfectly placed to keep the endurance levels up (and believe me, I've done a lot worse).

Now woundedknee (who did a similar session today!) ran from Athens to Sparta the same weekend as Berlin was on (the small matter of 153 miles, in temperatures of 35'C, in 34+ hours). Check out his race report.

As R-kelly would say*. My mind is telling me no but my body, my body is telling me yeah! Reread your post and pretend it's not yours! What advice would you give?

Yeah, that's a fair point. I'd be all over that post with my nuggets of bullsh1t. :)

Ditto. I've done some mental stuff myself in the past but would advise others against doing the same. It's easy to give advice but a little harder to heed it. As I always say it helps to be a little mad or a sufferer of OCD to be a good runner.

I'm not going to say anything, as I was planning on 13-15 miles on Saturday but cut it back to 10 miles (coincidentally also at 7:31 pace), as non-running things got in the way. However, halfway through the run I was trying to reschedule my day so I could stay out for a bit longer. That said I'm in full health at the moment!

Doesn't Tom Williams of MarathonTalk fame also have a busted ear drum problem at the moment?

Long flights with an ear problem sounds pretty nasty, hope it clears up a bit beforehand or that the trips get postponed.

I'm still on episode 16, and don't want to rush it, as eventually I'll have to wait a week for each episode. :o Let me know how it ends!

The ear drum doesn't affect the running, just the sleeping unfortunately. I'm off the antibiotics now too, so while the 'drum is still fecked, at least I should feel a little better. Flying to California on Saturday, back the following Friday (in time for DCM), then off to NY two weeks later for the marathon, then California again 10 days later, then a few weeks later again, so hopefully it'll recover in the meantime despite the high mileage. Timing obviously not one of my strengths.

Tonight: 6 mile easy run that felt great. I've gotten used to running 6 days a week, so rest days feel a little unusual.
    Summary: 6 miles in 45 mins, @7:37/mile

A bit removed from Berlin, how are you feeling about taking up another challenge Krusty? What's the motivation to get back into training like?

Bloody hell Krusty - take care - running aside that's not to be messed with.

This is the new job ? So I guess postponing it is out of the question ?

If you must go, take some candies to suck on and use before take off and landing. Airlines used to give them out to reduce ear discomfort (before air travel became an instrument of torture).

what is the ear like ? Have som problem myself that first its myright ear and then its my left ear. Find it hard to hear. Is this a similar problem ? Is it a berlin this. Ran with it over berlin. I thought it was in my head(taper madness) Now i might go to doc ?? I can give my ear a little slap and its ok. Its like I had a shower and there is water in there ??

Hi myflipflops, feeling good these days (ear problems aside!). Haven't been doing any sessions, but have been picking up the mileage and enjoying the running. I've doing extra sneaky miles on my easy runs, which is always a good sign. I have two more marathons (at very much sub-optimal pace) in the next couple of weeks, which should see me through to middle of November. At that point (or sooner) I reckon I'll be launching back into full training again, with a view to hitting a March/April target. At the moment I'm thinking 2:42 would be a good target, with an assault on a 2:3x later in 2011 (Chicago?). But new job / best laid plans and all that!

Hi pgmcpq, yep, the flights are for the new job (and NYC). No chance of postponing them (in fact I'm flying to SF on Saturday morning). The specialist reckons I'll be ok on the flights, as there's already a hole in the eardrum, so no pressure to equalize. Ironically, if I didn't have a hole in my eardrum he would have recommended staying on the ground!

I miss the Aer Lingus air hostesses (cos they were all air-hostesses at that stage!) with the baskets of jelly sweets. Will definitely bring my own though (and some pain killers). If things line up correctly, this Sunday, I should be doing my mini-taper run in Yosemite. Whoop!

Hi VR, it's like losing around 80% of your hearing, and having the constant sound of a river running through the side of your head. Not pleasant, and not great for sleep. Definitely worth getting it checked out, as infections in the inner ear are a nasty state of affairs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,511 ✭✭✭✭Krusty_Clown

Finally, 5 mile recovery run, in the dark in the park, on the grass. Nice and comfortable and a good solid run. It's lucky next week is a mini-taper, as I don't think I'll actually get that much running done for the next while.

    Summary: 5 miles in 41 mins, @8:05/mile

Still get them on my weekly flights :D The air hostesses are generally younger than the Aer Lingus ones too - although about the same on the looks front (need to fly Emirates more!!!). On the other hand, the prices definitely aren't in the Aer Lingus range!

Best of luck with the new job, hope the travelling isn't too hard on you.

No, unfortunately it's a pure work trip, so staying in San Jose. So hitting Yosemite on Sunday is just a plan at this stage, and might get scuppered. Could be 90 minutes on the treadie.. ;(

Yosemite is a bit of a trek from San Jose (I traveled there from SF and it took about 3 hours). Check the weather before heading out as snow can restrict entry to the Park. There are a few other National Parks around, may be more accessible.

Monterey is nice, as is SF itself.
