It's probably been answered already but does the WD player support mains powered external drives? I've 2x500gb drives but they're externally powered. Would be a pain to have to get new drives just to get them to work..

Also does it play dvd image folders (AUDIO_TS/VIDEOS_TS) and .iso format dvds as well?

Yes, I use a 1TB externally powered drive on mine.

    http://www.tvix.co.kr/eng/products/HDR-3300.aspx

the divco 3300 does not support mkv

its big brother does though - 6500 a = have one myself - its pricey though...I think they were on an Ibood offer a few days ago

Excellent player also plays iso and img files - ripped bluerays - full dts-hd pass through etc

Lads, I've gotten the player but lent it out to a friend..
downloaded an 19gig M2TS file last night.. is it gonna work on the player?
also when is the firmware gonna be out so the wd hd can turn off the wd protable harddrive?

The new firmware references something which may work.
Added spin down function for USB drives when the device is powered down; previously spin
down only occurred when a drive was ejected

Yea I notice that it does spin down alright like as if it goes into a sleep mode.. the light still stays on the portable..
another thing.. after downloading a few other files(couple of mkvs) and when I play them they have no sound.. but it does come up on the screen digital 1.. why won't the sound play for that file?

they are probably encoded in DTS you will need an external device to decode the DTS stream but you can reencode the sound using a freely available app that is mentioned somewhere in this thread

Ok I'll check out the program, remember it being mentioned somewere.. does it extract the sound so you have two files, or does it just reincode it back into one.. and is it a lenghty process?

Was anyone adventurous to try out the firmware hacks yet?

Apparently theres a hack that lets you use a USB to ethernet adapter,
for networking, but has limited functionality.

No no no, you're only downloading the thumbnail for the WDTV. If you're picture is to big the WDTV won't display it. These are the perfect size. Search for your movie, click on the picture you want until it displays the file info, (like in the screen shot below) then right click on it and select "Save image as".

I don't have an account with them

    movie.jpg
Thanks for that. I did a quick search there about how to actually attach a thumbnail to an avi file but to no avail. Do you need special software or can you point me to where there is a method done?

Thanks in advance and sorry for rehashing an old post

no software needed. Just rename the .jpg file the same as the .avi file i.e. batman.avi and batman.jpg

IS anyone else having probs with 1080p films playing on this?
I've downloaded a few 1080p films and they don't seem to play correctly... like with squared pixels appearing on moving parts and then turning discoloured..
    any ideas?

    Hi lads,
About to order the WD TV HD Media Player from Komplett but not sure what drive to get with it. I want a 1TB drive but should I get a Western Digital My Book2 Essential 1TB @ €96 or Western Digital Elements 1TB @ €82?? Not sure what the difference is between the two apart from price? Does anyone know?

    Cheers,
    M

Download Mediainfo from Sourceforge and run it on the movie file. Check that the encode is not L5.1, if it is then it's out of spec. and will not play on any media player.

    WD TV ceist:

Lads could anyone tell me if both the hdmi connection and 2x rca audio (red and white) can be used simultaneously?

Basically i just want to use the hdmi connection for video, connected to the tv, and use the red and white rca connected to my Surround Sound's amplifier.

The amp does not have a hdmi in, so i cannot use that for surround sound.

Would be great to know this in advance to purchasing it. Cheers!

Yeah you can, that will work fine. There is a simple option in the menus that selects between digital audio out (HDMI/optical) or analog (rca).

The problem is that if you are using the analog outs, surround sources will be obviously be downmixed to 2 channel. And I dont think it even uses a Dolby Surround matrix in the downmixing, I think it is just a straight stereo mix. So you won't get full use of your surround system.

Has your amp not got an optical input (toslink)?

Thanks for the replies voodoo and glic, appreciate it!

And yep, the surround system has an optical input, i didnt even realise the WDTV had an optical output, its quite a nice bit of gear.

    Hi lads,
I have the Sony DAV-DZ260 home cinema system and I am pretty sure it has an optical in on the back. Can I feed the optical out form the WD TV HD media player and get full surround sound from it? Does it depend on what the movie was encoded in? I have a good few .MKV movies files ready to roll when I get this baby!

    Cheers,
    M

well any audio that is dts you have to play through an amp or surround sound but ac3 should play through the tv no bother

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,403 ✭✭✭madmoe

So if I have a movie with DTS encoded audio in it and input this audio into my Sony will it be able to decode it?

    Cheers,

Yes, your Sony system will play back the DTS audio.

Thanx mate. Are the majority of movies that are in .MKV format encoded with DTS?

DTS and AC3 (Dolby Digital) can be sent directly out the optical socket (ie to let your Surround Decoder take care of it). That would be the ideal solution (if you have a surround system, and the movies are in AC3/DTS).

The WD will decode most formats itself if you wish (except DTS), but it downmixes any multi-channel streams into stereo before sending them out. So if you have a 6-ch AAC stream, you will effectively lose the 'surround' aspect of it.

Depends entirely on the individual movie and who encoded it. I encode most of my DVDs in .mkv with the AC3 stream intact. Most media players (on your PC) will allow you to check the properties of the movie to see what kind of sound it has.
