Hey lads, if I get this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Essential-External-Drive/dp/B000W9RNOA will it have to be powered by a seperate power supply or will the WD HD player be able to power it?

    Cheers,
    M

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,026 ✭✭✭Amalgam

That'll need it's own power supply.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,026 ✭✭✭Amalgam

I have that one, it drives me nuts, no physical on/off switch, it has to be switched off through the OS when the PC is on, it does switch off when the main PC is itself switched off, but with externals you're often fiddling about with it and it would be nice to have a physical switch.

Bummer, so the WD Passports are the only ones that really work with this then?

What is the max size they go up too?

No, not exactly, as long as a 2.5inch laptop HD in an enclosure takes the power from USB, it'll work, so.. you can have Lacie, Maxtor etc, not just stuck with WD.

Typically 320GB, not sure which brands offer 2.5inch 500GB options, it does exist though.

Is there anybody doing a 2.5 inch 1TB option?

so ya can't really get a hd with the powered by usb and just connect it to the player and let it power itsself from the wd hd?
    bit confused reading this now

What's there to be confused about? ANY 2.5inch HD that takes its power from the USB lead can be used with the media player. it will be powered by the WD Media Player.

I was saying 'No' in response to you saying you were limted to WD passport drives.

I had one of these also and got rid of it because of this. Went for the Seagate FreeAgent and love it. Has software inside so it will go into sleep mode from 3mins to 15mins if its idle. (You can choose whatever time)

are you sure there is such thing as a portable western digital 1tb seeing as 1tb sata 2.5" inch dont seem to exist.

    edit:

    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=498

mentions ac adaptor in the specs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,403 ✭✭✭madmoe

    From that page:

    Package Contents

    •External USB 2.0 hard drive
    •USB 2.0 certified cable
    •AC adapter
    •Quick Install Guide

Seems like it is not USB powered after all :-(

Anyone know if WD are planning on releasing a 1TB Elements\Passport portable anytime in the near future?

    Cheers,
    M

The biggest 2.5" consumer drives are 500GB at the moment. You'll see 640/750GB drives later this year, and 1TB 2.5" drives sometime in 2010.

one of my mates got a wd hdtv media player recently,i gave him a load of 720p movies to watch,he says they play fine picture wise but he has no sound,he is using the optical out of wd media player into hes amplifier the audio of most of the movies i gave him is dts audio and i though this would play fine as long as he used the optical out does the wd hdtv media player need an update maybe?

the 1080p one i have (7gig) ac3 plays for about 3 seconds then freezes, and no sound
plays on the pc no probs.. any ideas?

yeah there's been a few firmware upgrades at wdtvhd.com/index.php?showforum=8. There has also been a custom firmware made that makes the wdtv network connectable. at b-rad.cc .

The WDTV doesn't support DTS - you have to use digital out (optical) into your home cinema and then off you go. Also you have to select 'digital' in your sound settings of the WDTV. Does his HC support DTS? Is there a setting on the HC that you can select DTS?
There are firmware udates available. Maybe try these aswell.

i was hoping that 1 of the updates might support dts but doesnt look like it,yeah he knows all about the optical out he looked through the options on hes amplifier and doesnt seem to have any other options to change so unless a firmware update does it hes amp doesnt support dts audio

He can use the popcorn audio converter to convert all his movies in one go to AC3 sound which will play perfectly on his amp in surround sound.

May or may not be legit, havent the time or inclination to check. But I don't like those numbers tbh, personally I would do some hefty research before downloading the software you have linked above.

It's legit alright, here a link to the developer's forum where these false alerts are discussed.
