Sure the cameras probably don't work anyway.

What difference does it make if it was a mature student? Genuinely interested.

because mature students are seen as better students than CAO students. They are trusted more and their points are listened to. A lecturer would think twice about telling a mature student their idea is poor whereas with a CAO student they don't have a problem with it.

Most PG (as KDawg suggested she was) are technically mature (i.e. over 23) and would apply directly to UL rather than through the CAO so I'm not sure what you're trying to say, exactly.

Besides, if my undergrad and postgrad experiences are anything to go by, our lecturers hated the mature students (in PG, I mean mature as in 'didn't come directly/nearly directly from undergrad to postgrad') - always in the very front, often late, always interrupting and bugging them after class, emailing them with problems etc.
Might not hold true in all courses, it's only a generalisation, but anecdotally it seems to be a common enough experience.

Ah, it'll all be grand in the end. I used to despise it, now I merely dislike it from time to time. That said, when something won't work and no one knows why, the bile does tend to rise.

I'd quality as a mature student (weird situation where I dropped out in 2004 and resumed this year but still technically a first time undergrad)

While I generally sit near the front, it's mainly because the younger ones tend to talk amoungst themselves during the lectures and it's hard to hear what the actual person I came to the room to listen to is saying. I'm certainly never late, but I do have to say that the 'real' matures that I come across tend to complain a lot more and I've already had my timetable changed twice because of it.

Boo-urns! I'd love to programming modules again. :(

Something about being frustrated for hours at a piece of code and then slowly working out how to make it work that really makes me happy, more than anything else we've done in the five semesters I've been here.

On mature students, guess my course is lucky, since all the matures are sound and generally tend to be as immature as the rest of us. :P

Except for Stuxnet, that bollix is always complaining! :pac: (just kidding. :))

Don't see anything wrong with asking the lecturers questions.

Ask him/her at the end rather than when everyone is trying to listen to them

Asking questions mid lecture ruins flow...

Have you gone to the ICT Learning Centre? They're a great resource for newbies to programming.

Haven't used BluJ, I found Eclipse much better, though a bit more complicated. What level are you at?

    What course are you doing?

If you're in LM051 or LM110, I'd suggest you pick up a copy of "Introduction to Java Programming" by Y. Daniel Liang. It's by far the best textbook I've gotten, and has loads of exercises and examples for basically everything you'll need.

If you're in one of those courses, you'll need that book in 2nd year. (I'm assuming you're in 1st year because you're using BlueJ).

If you're not in one those courses, grab a copy in the library if you can find one, or buy it if you can afford it. it's seriously a brilliant book if you want to learn Java IMO.

I would double quote, emphasise and frame this. That book is absolutely fantastic. It got me through an entire 1st year course in 2 months by just doing the first 7 or 8 chapters. Without it, I would have been royally screwed coming back into this course (LM051) as I mainly did C++ the first time around.

Im doing LM065 Applied Physics so this is my only programming module. I dont want to buy a book if I'm only using it until christmas.I'll see if I can get it in the library.

I'd go ASAP to the library if I were you. Probably no copies left at this stage because LM051's and LM110's are in the middle of their Java project at the moment so probably have most of the copies.

Vending machine in our block was empty yesterday. The utter heartbreak of not being able to get an ice cold can of coke at 2am when pulling an all nighter. </3
