Thanks. Intersting picture, though it doesnt seem to make a whole lot of sense to me, extra roads all over the place for no apparent reason!!

I still can't work out how you will get from Blanch village to M50 south!!

What the ... looks like the plan is for a crazy amount of road - but they're still going to have that lame-ass mega roundabout there.

I think (maybe, but not sure) but any movements from the N3 to M50 or vice versa won't use the roundabout.

Similar situation on the M1 M50 junction. The roundabout is there but won't be necessary except for traffic wanting to leave or get to the N32. Its like they are building a juntion around the existing junction.

The design is confusing to say the least, but considering the limitations I guess it's pretty good.

BTW The roundabout makes the whole thing look AWFUL...

It looks really stupid sitting in the middle of the place.

As long as we can all get from A to B safely along a well signed route via the junction, who cares what it looks like.

Are we talking about the N3/M50 junction in Ireland? :D

    WISHFUL THINKING :D

Ther need to hand the signage project to a UK company.

indeed, Irish road signage is possibly the worst in western Europe as its littered with mistakes, inconsistencys and is generally hard to read and often lacking in information.

or overloading the motorist with information, on a dozen different panels.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,468 ✭✭✭BluntGuy

Or giving the information when it is completely useless...

The 'Motorway Ahead' signs placed on the slip roads AFTER you have entered the motorway on the fermoy bypass are a great example. Who honestly thought that was a good idea?

This is the EIS for the new junction.

Thanks for the EIS link! Unfortunately, I'm sure not many of us have the time (or the broadband) to read all that, so I've just taken some of the pictures out of it.

Assuming the Blanchardstown Roundabout is being replaced (the small one) - I still can't see how you get in to Blanch village from the M50 southbound?

    Same as now! ;)

    *facepalm*

Never thought of checking to see if the existing movements were preserved for it....

The issue I have with the new interchange is the excessively long pedestrian route. See highlighted section of the attached image.

I realise that the current (short and direct) route cannot be used because the Castleknock end of that is being transferred to the tennis club (exchange for some of their land I believe).

The climb in the highlighted (double underline) double-back section should be incorporated into the M50 crossing.
The first, smaller double-back on the Blanchardstown side could probably be eliminated too.

I do wonder if the inclines are such to accommodate wheelchair users (though I still feel that an incline across the M50 would be okay).

also these plans show nothing of the new bridge they've just built into the hospital. how will this affect that junction??

    Cheers,

As i use the route from blanch village to m50 south...

After looking at the diagram this is the route i think you'd have to take!! (see attachment)

pardon for non steady red line in image, damn laptop thumb pads!!

goin by there today, they are fairly progressing. Does anyone know if they are getting rid of the roundabout at the new Connolly Hospital bridge? its kinda hard to tell from the photos.

Progressing? really? They've cut down a lot of trees but is there real progress there?

    Any photos or anything?

Theres an entire bridge deck in; lots of support pillars for further decks; some M50 south offramps are moved well well over to the left, theres been quite a bit done.

The roundabout is due to go, they have started clearing before it and supports are in for a for a pedestrian bridge i believe.

Its not the easiest junction to get photos, give me a lend of your helicopter, and it would be easy! The main new N3 bridges are in good order, lot of the concrete is done.

Coming off the M50 going northbound just shows a few tress gone, but thats the handiest part of the junction not much work needs to be dont that side, its mainly the pilliar for the new offramp. All the work is on the other side. They are defo behind the M1 junction.

It'll be great when that goes, major bottle neck there in the morns. re supports ... are they not for an over head sign?

Is there anywhere at all to get live updates / photos etc on the progress? The www.m50.ie website is useless :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,340 CMod ✭✭✭✭Davy

Ye it will be great when it comes. Ye the supports could be be for sign alright, i think there is a pedestrian bridge going in around there somewhere.

I hate that short bus lane along the N3 towards the roundabout, pointless!

Can someone explain why they don't get rid of the big roundabout that's over the M50 and just replace it with roads straight through?

I agree, it doesnt give much, just if they are doing road closures etc. Best way is driving along it really

Because there is a LEISURE CENTRE in the way. Only in Ireland.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,080 ✭✭✭✭Random

Buy it off them .. they'll be happy to sell I would say.

There's also the option of working around it .. it's off to the side a bit .. it's not gonna stop a dual carraigeway from the travellodge to the Blanch roundabout surely?

They are working around it - they're skewing the N3 through around to the north of it.

Inbound ? Doesn't that bus lane stretch as far as Clonee, possibly further ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭Zoney

While having to work around the leisure centre is silly alright, if it wasn't there it possibly would still be easiest to work around the massive roundabout. Besides - it isn't as simple as "straight through" because you have the Blanchardstown roundabout/local access to accommodate - this will be pretty nicely done with the new junction.

The finished N3 junction should look a bit crazy from the air though, not to mention on the ground!

Because the main thrust of the junction improvement is to freeflow the M50<->N3 west, not to freeflow the movement in and out of the city. It's sort of pointless to provide a simple 'up and over' because the N3 inbound has a signal controlled junction (Auburn Ave.) almost immediately after the M50. If this juction were out in the sticks with no junctions either side, this is how you'd improve it. There are countless examples of this type of improvement in GB actually. Just not suitable/sufficient for the calamity that is the current M50 J6. Dreadful planning allowed development WAY too close to the existing junction of course.

I mean the short stretch from the blanch shopping centre on ramp to the roundabout at the entrance to blanch village. Its only 200 metres long and traffic has to merge and then splits again when it gets to the roundabout. For the amount of buses that use it, i think it would be better to finish the bus lane before the merge.

They could have considered an underpass for this junction - much like the Newcastle junction on the N4.

Would be good, but id say cost a big factor. I hate that roundabout though, coming from auburn ave can be a nightmare at times. The lighted junction hopefully will improve things

Indeed! Think of the chaos that would have ensued while it was being constructed.

However, they did a very good job at the Newcastle junction and kept disruption to a minimum.

The plan will be for n3 city bound traffic to be entirely freeflow from before the Blanchardstown roundabout until after the Auburn Roundabout -- see the image [url=https://us.v-cdn.net/6034073/uploads/attachments/40424/49842.jpg[/url]. It appears from the image that both of these roundabouts will cease to exist...

Correct, both roundabouts will be gone.

The roundabout at the auburn ave will now be controlled with just lights.

I could be wrong but it seems on that image that the n3 inbound underpasses the auburn avenue junction but on the other images it meets up with the junction at the traffic lights, anybody know whats actually going to happen here??

Can wait for this upgrade to be complete. Got stuck in Ballymun on the southbound land of the M50 the other mroning, and it reminded me of how bad the Blanch - Ballymount section was during that upgrade. The N3 interchange upgrade will be a complete God-send

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,340 CMod ✭✭✭✭Davy

Guessing you were stuck on tuesday when guards closed the road at blanch. It was madness. Hopefully with the new three lanes their will be no need for a full road closure, because with the new design of free flow junctions the easy up and over will be gone!

In the new image, the free flowing slip is removed.

But from the mistakes of the Redcow, I hope they make sure they make it as freeflow much as possible, so we wont have to spend more money in years to come filling in the free flow movements..
