What's the story on groups in this country who wear their own uniform and have a military rank structure?

    http://home.earthlink.net/~rggsibiba/html/galloglas/gallohist.html

    Scroll to bottom of page.

i'm pretty sure some of their insignia seems to be based on our military's.

With the crowns its more like the BA. And a corporal in the DF is ceannaire not corporáil.

    EDIT - parawings??? WTF???

Why would people who aren't members of the Irish police want to call themselves "Garda?"

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,793 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

Garda simply means guardian, as in "An Garda Siochana", literally "Guardians of the Peace" as opposed to the term "Police" in English. The word obviously pre-dates the organization.

    Royal Galloglas Guard today
The Galloglas is commanded by Colonel The Chevalier James Shortt, The Baron of Castleshort (An Ridire Séamus MacAnGéarr, An Tiarna na Barúntach na Caisleángéarr). Piper for the Galloglas is Captaen Noel Whelan (Nollaig O'Faollain).
    escrus1.jpggdm1.jpggmd2.jpg
The Galloglas perform both ceremonial and protective functions. In Charleston recently The Galloglas escorted guests such as Prince Ermias Haile Selassie and General & Mrs Westmoreland. In London, the Galloglas were on hand at the War & Peace Ball at the Dorchester Hotel as an Escort for the Grand Duchess Maria Vladirmirovna Romanov. Immediately before the stroke of midnight, Wednesday, 15 July 1998, the Commander of the Royal Galloglas, with Piper and Adjutants, paraded in full Galloglas uniform at St. Peter & Paul Cathedral in the fortress of St. Peter & Paul, St. Petersburg, Russia. They rendered the traditional honours and played a lament before the coffins of Czar Nicholas II, his family & retainers, who were murdered by the Bolsheviks in 1918.
mccross.gifviscount.gifIn one of their ceremonial roles, the Galloglas represent The Honourable Society of the Irish Brigade (in French service), at commemorations of Irish Soldiers in Foreign Service. Officers of the Royal Galloglas automatically are Officers of the Society by virtue of representing the Society at Memorial events. The Mountcashel Cross of the Society of the Irish Brigade was drawn by Dennis Ivall , and is worn by Officers. It is named after Justin MacCarthy, Viscount Mountcashel (first Duke of Clancarthy), the founder of the Irish Brigade. The Cross features crossed Galloglas Swords to the rear and a Royal Munster Crown with cap above. In the centre appear the Royal Arms of the Kings of France and in a belt the motto given to the Brigade by the French Royal Family - Semper et Ubique Fidelis - Always & Everywhere Faithful - and above this the date 1694 being the date of the death of Lord Mountcashel. The cross comes in 2 classes - Officers Cross and Breast Cross.
The Guard were present and their Piper played in 1996 at the 250th anniversary of Culloden, at the Irish Piquet's memorial. In the same year they were present at Killiecrankie. In 1995 in Belgium at Ypres, The Menin Gate and Paschendale, they mounted guard and piped. In 1997 they commemorated the Irish who fell at Fredericksburg. The life of Marshall Peter de Lacy in Russian Imperial Service was remembered at St Petersburg in Russia by the Colonel, Captain-Piper and 2 adjutants. The Irish who fell in Swedish Imperial service at Riga were commemorated in Riga in 1994 and 1997. In January 1998, The Royal Galloglas commemorated The Irish Volunteer Militia of South Carolina and Irish Confederate & Union veterans who fell at Fort Sumter including Captain John Mitchell (son of Young Irelander John Mitchell).
The Royal Galloglas wear a blue military tunic with the Galloglas badge on the right arm, a Saffron Kilt (filleadh beag or filleadhín) with saffron plaid on the right shoulder. The metal buttons carry 3 ancient crowns.

Dusk parade of the Royal Galloglas Guard at the grave of
Corparáil Paul Falvey. He was buried with his mother.
On Tuesday, 24 November 1998, the Guard assembled at Paul's father's house in Ballincollig, West Cork and with family and relatives proceeded to the cemetery. A decade of the Rosary was said by the guard in Gaelic, Captain Noel Whelan played a Gaelic lament and then The Minstrel Boy on the Irish Warpipes. Irish whiskey was consumed and a glass also poured over the grave, and the Guard and neighbours repaired to the local public house O'Shea's to "wake" Paul Falvey with his family.

I don't know this organization. When I saw this first I thought they were a re-enactment / ceremonial organization. Now it looks like they are either a true paramilitary outfit or a load of Walters. I suspect the latter.

I'm moving this to Walter Mitty.

those pictures are probably from jim shortt running a bodyguard or jujutsu course here ala below rather than his league of gallowglasses thingey

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 129 ✭✭Duffers

One look at either his cv or the page on arrse will tell you he is 100% Walt!

And those pics...he really does like dressing up, eh! First he is some sort of Celtic warlord in a kilt, with titles and knighthoods coming out of his ears, then he is some kind of psuedo cowboy on a horse! Baron, Colonel, Knight of the order of (insert dubious title here), Badged 21 SAS???!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,134 ✭✭✭✭Grizzly 45

The firepower on the table are DEACTS,or I hope they are! Otherwise I would love to know how the IBA is running around with AKs,A Gustav SMG,HK G3, a walther G22, and a mauser style rifle, not to mind SAS style Kit complete with HK SMGs in Ireland. What dressing up as a counter terrorist unit ,and learning their tactics has to do with close protection personel is well beyond me.They are as different as chalk and cheese.Your job as a BG is to keep your client safe and away from firefights, not engage in them .If that happens ,your basic planning was fuked up from the word go.
As that alone contravese the offences against the State act 1939.In that it is prohibited to train, drill or instruct any individual or body of men in military arms, tactics, formations or military knowledge, save for organs of the Irish Army or Garda.
Nor is instruction in defensve pistol shooting legal here either under the firearms acts. You wont be issued any firearm liscense here in Ireland for self defence. The Irish Practical Shooting Association, which is purely a dynamic sport type shooting,is looked on with askence by the Dept of Justice and Gardai.
So WTF will they make of a "Baron" [The Irish State does not recognise titles of nobility last time I looked]down in Wicklow or Louth with his own private army, training people in para military tactics etc.:eek::eek:

    This could get intresting!

I reckon I've seen some of those pics before, but I believe as far as the weapons and black kit is concerned, all that training takes place in Europe and not here in Ireland.

Sush now, dont remind people that the offences against the state acts never go away, people might wonder about what kind of a country this is :pac:

Errr, well how come on the IBA Deutschland site for the blurb for the DVD that it was filmed in Castle Bellingham estate and Castle Cosey the IBA HQ????
Bit unusual then for a range warning sign in English if this was done in Europe,They would be dual langauge by IntL law.

Wow, this guy is priceless. A total fantasist. I don't know how I missed hearing about him before. He is a world class Walter Mitty. I know that because I never met him when I served in the SAS, just before I was sent on TDY to the Navy Seals to teach them anti-terrorism techniques.:p

    He's quite entertaining.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,533 ✭✭✭iceage

That can't be right Diverdriver, cos this man has taught everybody CT, and then some. Medals a plenty, letters of commendation and a Papal Knighthood no less!!

Hah, you can't fool me, everyone knows the boathouse was blown up by the PIRA back in 74. We just used drink our beer warm because we were right 'ard bastards.

When I was training the Legion in desert endurance, we only drank red wine, because there was nowhere to chill the white in the desert.

Theres an ad in todays herald for a driver bodygaurd
    who is IBA accredited
oh god i couldnt stop laughing
by the way driver is that you who is training people for the galatic strike team and interplanetary ct units :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 987 ✭✭✭diverdriver

No, you have to be IBA accredited and they wouldn't let me in. Besides I get space sick and have never gone back into space since I had to rescue the Discovery astronauts from aliens and then pilot the shuttle into Shannon airport. Spacesickness is my one weak point:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,533 ✭✭✭iceage

Easy now chaps..As to the IBA thats a completely differant matter. I happen to know personally someone who has completed the IBA course and is also a very good friend of mine and a top man. There are many I believe who have passed through the IBA training who are starting to ask questions in several countries.

The issues that are at question are this guys claims about his military background and certain associations to particular organisations.

Now that cleared up... Iceage has to sit down from laughing at Diverdrivers description of Shuttle rescues landing at Shannon...great cure for Spacesickness is a raw egg and a pint of Guinesss. I would have thought all super heros knew that one? :D Nailers mate!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27 Walt-Finder

agree with iceage. it matters not whether jimbo is running a pyramid selling scheme in the 3rd world and creaming off profits for himself. certainly some of the franchise people can offer some decent training and it seems clear that jimbo could personally give you a good smacking even though he seems to be overdoing the beer and pies these days, even if he cant handle a firearm properly and only seems to like shooting static targets at point blank range :)

the real questions are whether any of his claimed military background and other qualifications are worth anything at all (probably not) and whether you really want to do business with someone who likes dressing up a wee bit too much :):)

oh, yes, and the fact that his postal address seems to be different everywhere you look but usually turns out to be either a hotel or a golf club with a fancy name with castle in it. the guys on arrse listed all those in the wiki.

great cure for Spacesickness is a raw egg and a pint of Guinesss.
Of course I knew that, but to be honest I'm not sure which is worse, spacesickness or raw egg and Guinness. I think I'll leave orbital flying to the other Space Cadets.

What's interesting about our friend though is the fact that he actually has done some interesting things probably because people were were taken in on the basis of his fantasy career. Many other Walts never actually do anything at all that would involve travelling more than a moped ride from their Mother's house.

Experts like myself can spot him of course. When I served with the little known ultra secret (but now disbanded) 19th SAS. I was secretly seconded to D Company of the 20th (City of Dublin) Infantry Battalion, FCA. My CO said it was the best place for me, he said it was a position that best suited me. My mission was to look out for Communist infiltrators, (this was during the cold war). But my cover was soon blown. It turned out that half the battalion were special forces operatives. An elite unit indeed! James Shortt wouldn't have survived five minutes on the Kilpeddar range. Those were the days!:D

According to someone who knows more about these things than I do:
that single medal with the green ribbon that they're wearing originated when some FCA men, disgruntled with the lack of medals they were entitled to had their own made up, qualifying criteria being that of having served in the 7th FCA Battalion!

The powers that be warned them that they were not allowed to wear these trinkets on FCA uniform which is apparently why they joined the Royal Gallowglass Guard.

    A bit sad......

Chatting to someone the other day; the Gardai/ powers that be would tend to regard "The Royal Galloglas Guard" as a bunch of harmless fantasists.

They might have their own uniforms and ranks, but so do Star Trek fans, and they'd be considered to be in much the same category.

Military types might be interested in an excellant , and revealing (extrapolate forward to today, and fill in the gaps), obituary in Times dated 14-1-09; possibly findable at www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/obituaries/article5510894.ece concerning the late Colonel David Smiley. (Don't fret it has a happy ending-for him anyway.)
I'll make my comments another time (or maybe not at all, the span of attention is really quite brief). De mortuis, nil nisi bonum.
