Well his name and face is popping up all over the place at the minute. Seems that he has attracted quite a lot of interest from some very angry people who reckon his a walt of the highest degree.

ARRSE have a thread of over 200 pages of stuff about this guy.

hats the best pun in ages
glad to see the baron is doing well on publicity

Wow, this guy is priceless. A total fantasist. I don't know how I missed hearing about him before. He is a world class Walter Mitty. I know that because I never met him when I served in the SAS, just before I was sent on TDY to the Navy Seals to teach them anti-terrorism techniques.:p

    He's quite entertaining.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,530 ✭✭✭ iceage

That can't be right Diverdriver, cos this man has taught everybody CT, and then some. Medals a plenty, letters of commendation and a Papal Knighthood no less!!

SAS eh. So what is the colour of the fridge in the Boathouse?? :)

Hah, you can't fool me, everyone knows the boathouse was blown up by the PIRA back in 74. We just used drink our beer warm because we were right 'ard bastards.

When I was training the Legion in desert endurance, we only drank red wine, because there was nowhere to chill the white in the desert.

Theres an ad in todays herald for a driver bodygaurd
    who is IBA accredited
oh god i couldnt stop laughing
by the way driver is that you who is training people for the galatic strike team and interplanetary ct units :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 987 ✭✭✭ diverdriver

No, you have to be IBA accredited and they wouldn't let me in. Besides I get space sick and have never gone back into space since I had to rescue the Discovery astronauts from aliens and then pilot the shuttle into Shannon airport. Spacesickness is my one weak point:(

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,530 ✭✭✭ iceage

Easy now chaps..As to the IBA thats a completely differant matter. I happen to know personally someone who has completed the IBA course and is also a very good friend of mine and a top man. There are many I believe who have passed through the IBA training who are starting to ask questions in several countries.

The issues that are at question are this guys claims about his military background and certain associations to particular organisations.

Now that cleared up... Iceage has to sit down from laughing at Diverdrivers description of Shuttle rescues landing at Shannon...great cure for Spacesickness is a raw egg and a pint of Guinesss. I would have thought all super heros knew that one? :D Nailers mate!

agree with iceage. it matters not whether jimbo is running a pyramid selling scheme in the 3rd world and creaming off profits for himself. certainly some of the franchise people can offer some decent training and it seems clear that jimbo could personally give you a good smacking even though he seems to be overdoing the beer and pies these days, even if he cant handle a firearm properly and only seems to like shooting static targets at point blank range :)

the real questions are whether any of his claimed military background and other qualifications are worth anything at all (probably not) and whether you really want to do business with someone who likes dressing up a wee bit too much :):)

oh, yes, and the fact that his postal address seems to be different everywhere you look but usually turns out to be either a hotel or a golf club with a fancy name with castle in it. the guys on arrse listed all those in the wiki.

great cure for Spacesickness is a raw egg and a pint of Guinesss.
Of course I knew that, but to be honest I'm not sure which is worse, spacesickness or raw egg and Guinness. I think I'll leave orbital flying to the other Space Cadets.

What's interesting about our friend though is the fact that he actually has done some interesting things probably because people were were taken in on the basis of his fantasy career. Many other Walts never actually do anything at all that would involve travelling more than a moped ride from their Mother's house.

Experts like myself can spot him of course. When I served with the little known ultra secret (but now disbanded) 19th SAS. I was secretly seconded to D Company of the 20th (City of Dublin) Infantry Battalion, FCA. My CO said it was the best place for me, he said it was a position that best suited me. My mission was to look out for Communist infiltrators, (this was during the cold war). But my cover was soon blown. It turned out that half the battalion were special forces operatives. An elite unit indeed! James Shortt wouldn't have survived five minutes on the Kilpeddar range. Those were the days!:D

    Royal Galloglas Guard today
The Galloglas is commanded by Colonel The Chevalier James Shortt, The Baron of Castleshort (An Ridire Séamus MacAnGéarr, An Tiarna na Barúntach na Caisleángéarr). Piper for the Galloglas is Captaen Noel Whelan (Nollaig O'Faollain).
    escrus1.jpggdm1.jpggmd2.jpg

According to someone who knows more about these things than I do:
that single medal with the green ribbon that they're wearing originated when some FCA men, disgruntled with the lack of medals they were entitled to had their own made up, qualifying criteria being that of having served in the 7th FCA Battalion!

The powers that be warned them that they were not allowed to wear these trinkets on FCA uniform which is apparently why they joined the Royal Gallowglass Guard.

    A bit sad......

Surely the beret shape alone would show that the man is a spoofer of the highest order.

Funny that...a lot of guys saying the same thing. Ahh yes the secret art of beret shaping passed down from man to boy through the ages....except in this guys case. The term Mong springs to mind.

Chatting to someone the other day; the Gardai/ powers that be would tend to regard "The Royal Galloglas Guard" as a bunch of harmless fantasists.

They might have their own uniforms and ranks, but so do Star Trek fans, and they'd be considered to be in much the same category.

    See: http://www.arrse.co.uk/wiki/Royal_Galloglas_Guard

Military types might be interested in an excellant , and revealing (extrapolate forward to today, and fill in the gaps), obituary in Times dated 14-1-09; possibly findable at www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/obituaries/article5510894.ece concerning the late Colonel David Smiley. (Don't fret it has a happy ending-for him anyway.)
I'll make my comments another time (or maybe not at all, the span of attention is really quite brief). De mortuis, nil nisi bonum.

Quote"PULSE Security Management, the security firm "policing" the UCD campus since September, is trained in security techniques by the International Bodyguard Association, an Irish Private Military Company that specialises in special forces type training.

A Testimonial for PULSE by IBA Director General Jim Short reads: "I would have no hesitation in recommending Pulse Security Management as a close protection team. Their teams have undergone intensive training with the IBA and have obtained (sic) a very high standard".Quote.

Correct me if I have this wrong, this is a College Campus we're talking about Night Flight yes? I can understand security to a certain degree of course, for all the usual reasons but again I quote "trained in security techniques by the International Bodyguard Association, an Irish Private Military Company that specialises in special forces type training."

"A private Irish Military Company"......sounds extremely dodgey to me, is there such a thing? Is it even legal?

"specialises in special forces type training." for what? to mind students that might be kidnapped by some foreign terrorist faction in Finglas! or stop them pissing on the faculty property. sounds like b*llocks to me.

Scroll down a bit. This appears to be the truth in the matter:
The Truth About the IBA "special forces training"
person.gif by Paul Kdate.gifTue Dec 16, 2008 13:08report.gifThe "DG" of the IBA, Jim Shortt (or "Colonel Baron James Shortt" as he prefers to be known) is a charlatan of the highest order - see link.

Among many other things he claims to be a former member of the British Army Paras and SAS; the truth is that he specialises in dressing up shaven headed simians tired of their true vocation as nightclub bouncers as commandos complete with airsoft machine guns at "training courses" at Castlebellingham Hotel and giving them notions about themselves, in much the same way that the UDA used to dress themselves up as soldiers to bolster their self-image. These thugs are then let loose on an Irish university campus.

Speaking of which, this acitivity seems to be covered by the following legislation:
Unauthorised military exercises prohibited. 15. —(1) Save as authorised by a Minister of State under this section, and subject to the exceptions hereinafter mentioned, it shall not be lawful for any assembly of persons to practise or to train or drill themselves in or be trained or drilled in the use of arms or the performance of military exercises, evolutions, or manoeuvres nor for any persons to meet together or assemble for the purpose of so practising or training or drilling or being trained or drilled.
    [GA]
    (2) A Minister of State may at his discretion by order, subject to such limitations, qualifications and conditions as he shall think fit to impose and shall express in the order, authorise the members of any organisation to meet together and do such one or more of the following things as shall be specified in such order, that is to say, to practise or train or drill themselves in or be trained or drilled in the use of arms or the performance of military exercises, evolutions, or manoeuvres.
    [GA]
    (3) If any person is present at or takes part in or gives instruction to or trains or drills an assembly of persons who without or otherwise than in accordance with an authorisation, granted by a Minister of State under this section practise, or train or drill themselves in, or are trained or drilled in the use of arms or the performance of any military exercise, evolution, or manoeuvre or who without or otherwise than in accordance with such authorisation have assembled or met together for the purpose of so practising, or training or drilling or being trained or drilled, such person shall be guilty of a misdemeanour and shall be liable on conviction thereof to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years.
    [GA]
    (4) This section shall not apply to any assembly of members of any military or police force lawfully maintained by the Government.
    [GA]
    (5) In any prosecution under this section the burden of proof that any act was authorised under this section shall lie on the person prosecuted.
