I've decided that this is borderline between a Waterford city event and advertising, so for that reason, rather than delete it altogether, I've merged it with the events thread.

Imagine you went shopping and somebody stole 1/3 of your shopping from your trolley after you paid for it! This is what we do to ourselves when we waste food. About 1/3 of all the food we buy gets thrown out! On average, wasted food costs each Irish household €700 a year. For some households this can be over €1,000 – at a time when most people are looking for ways to spend money more wisely and get better value for money, can you justify wasting money by throwing out food?

In order to help you to prevent this waste, Waterford City Council and the ENFOpoint service in Central Library are hosting a free workshop at 10.30am in Central Library, Lady Lane on Wednesday 26th January to help you to Stop Food Waste. All are welcome to attend. This workshop is being held by Waterford City Council in conjunction with the Stop Food Waste Team. The Stop Food Waste programme is developed by the EPA as part of the National Waste Prevention Programme.

What exactly is Beardyman? One minute he's winning the UK Beatbox competition, twice, next he's winning best MC at Breakspoll, and then he's playing a sold-out run of solo comedy shows at the Edinburgh Fringe. That's not fair... Most people only get to do... well... none of those... but this is Beardyman we're talking about. A leading light on the Beatbox scene since he landed on it with a bang in the mid noughties, Beardyman, (real name Darren Foreman) has always pushed beatbox way beyond what most beatboxers consider its limits. A uniquely gifted performer, his refusal to be put in a box has seen him beatbox all over the world including support slots touring with Groove Armada and hosting huge festival main stages.

However, all this was not enough for Foreman. Frustrated with the restrictions of the human mouth, but still obsessed with it's unparalleled capabilities, he quickly became a leading figure in the emerging trend of live-looping, being the first to appropriate the Korg Kaoss Pad as a live-looping tool and pushing his beatbox-based art form into the entrancing and uncharted realms of live-production. "Beatbox for me is just the quickest way of getting the ideas in my head out into the world where people can hear them" he says. Now, when playing to screaming fans all over the world, he uses an ever-growing arsenal of sound manipulation technology to take the ever-growing crowds with him on full-length musical journeys, darting from exhilaratingly ad-hoc rave-up to comedic musings and interpretations and mash-ups of classic tunes from a huge range of genres. His YouTube videos, which range from the comedic and ridiculous to the downright breathtaking, have been viewed tens of millions of times and it's hard to find a bad comment on any of them.

    Just a reminder,

Ciorcal Comhrá na nDéise is still going strong - Every thursday in the Gingerman bar, at 9:30PM. (Most People usually don't turn up til about 9:45PM though, so hang around for a few minutes if nobody is there).

Great opportunity to use your cupla focal, and improve your Irish, and confidence in speaking it. All welcome regardless of how strong your Irish is. We have anything between 4 to 10 people each week (depending on the weather, etc..). All ages, and sexes are covered. We usually have free sandwiches too!.. courtesy of the Gingerman.

We occasionally organise trips to An Rinn (Local Gaeltacht) - which offer a real opportunity to engage with strong Irish speakers.

Would love to see some new faces! Drop me a line if you have any questions.

    Ádh mór,

This Saturday from 1pm in John Roberts Square, as part of Waterford City Council's 2011 Artsbeat programme, folk singer/songwriter Sonny Condell will play of live set of new material and former hits.

An integral part of the Irish music scene since the early `70s, Sonny Condell is the real McCoy. With a musical career spanning 35 years, from the heady days with “Tír Na nÓg”, which landed him on the biggest stages in the world, to the truly fantastic “Scullion”, Sonny Condell is arguably one of Irelands greatest songwriters.

Although not easily categorised, Sonny’s music might be considered contemporary folk but in a 40 year career in music, has moved seamlessly across musical boundaries, to include elements of Traditional Irish Music, Folk, a hint of Jazz, and even splashes of Reggae. In four decades in the music business, Sonny has never been less than true to his art, and still likes nothing better than an intimate folk club, with nought for company onstage but his acoustic guitar. Artbeat is delighted to host Sonny Condellin Waterford this Saturday.
