The Kite was just outside Avoca village, which is their
home territory, but they will travel further afield there has
been one spotted in Newtownmountkennedy in the past.

Haven't been out with the camera in ages, so pushed myself to get out over the last week.

The first four (Bullfinches, Long Tailed Tit, Coal Tit and Robin) are all from Marlay Park.
The last two (Heron and young Starling) are from Malahide.

Cormorant on the Liffey this morning, near Heuston. It's the first time I've noticed the ring on his leg (can't see it in this photo, the ones you can are terribly backlit. (Canon PowerShotSX30. 1/250 seconds, F5, 81mm. ISO200, -2/3EV

Heron in the Botanic Gardens on Saturday (Olympus E3, 1/600 seconds, F4.5,50-200mm lens @200mm, ISO 200, -1/3EV). He was catching some little tiddlers, too.

    Crow with deformed beak - Greystones seafront. (Olympus E3, 1/1000 seconds, F6.512-60mm lens @ 60mm, ISO 800 ???? mistake, that!), -.3 EV)

I've gotten very fond of this bird and her partner, because I walk past their nest every morning when I walk my dog. The Finnish name of this species is silkkiuikku, which I think means great crested grebe :)

They've now completed the nest, but she was sitting on it this morning (Monday), so I didn't see whether or not she had laid eggs yet.

We dog-owners got together last year and made sure we kept our pets on their leads near the nest so that they wouldn't dash in and disturb the birds, but one morning it emerged that someone had destroyed the nest by throwing several fist-sized stones into it. Maybe that meteorite that will make humans go the way of the dinosaurs is overdue.

Reed Bunting in early morning sunlight at Lough Boora with beaks full of Damselflies. These were all taken before 6.30am while sun was still very low in the sky hence the warm tones.

The last one of your Reed Bunting shots shows 3 damselfly larvae in its beak. It hasn't plucked the larvae out of the water, but is getting them because the larvae crawl up vegetation so that they can turn into adults. Obviously they are vulnerable to predation at this stage.

Great-tit gets bizarrely trapped in feeder. Cat gets very excited about it, but is ultimately disappointed that the photographer broke all artistic rules by interfering with the scene and liberating the bird.

Thats a great tit. Maybe you should move the feeder to a place where the cat cant climb up on it, you'll get more birds using it as the cat could be putting them off.

Lovely pictures. the second is a black backed gull, not sure if it's a greater or lesser though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,878 ✭✭✭whyulittle

I've seen some huge gulls on the river lately, but this one didn't look too big compared to the Black-headed Gulls.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,762 ✭✭✭✭stupidusername

hmmm if it's not, then i'm stumped, don't know my gulls well enough. black heads are smaller than herrings, i think, and greater black backed should be slightly bigger than herrings. lesser black backed should be smaller than herrings i think. maybe someone else can explain so. :)
