Anywhere else in the dublin mountains that you have come accross them?

    Great thread, some crackin shots.
Can anyone tell me what this is?
It clung onto my windscreen for dear life on the way home from work one day and since i just bought a macro extension for my camera i caught it and took a few pics.
It wasnt too happy about it and tried to fly away if i put it in a box(the orange and black stripy bits are wings that fold under its back) so i left it out on a sheet of paper and this was the only photo i could get of it standing still.

No idea Panda :D Dont really want to find out either!! I have seen quite a few of them and have never noticed any smell, maybe they dont see me as a predator.

Totally off topic but just seen a magpie chasing after and trying to peck at a butterfly in the rain. Just seemed unusual to me. Must be tough times for magpies if they have to chase after butterflies. :D

It's an ichneumon wasp. (parasitic wasp) They inject eggs into hosts which are often caterpillars. They don't sting as such but may have venom and I have experienced a mild sting from one.

only couple of weeks ago I came across one of those caterpillars with maggots bursting out of it. poor critter:(

I took a trip to the beach today and spotted a few of these.
    Are they Oystercatchers?

And this little fella was sitting on the stones being blown in the wind. I've no idea what kind of butterfly it is!

Just from looking at the UK Moths website it appears to be a Magpie moth.

Looks like a male tegenaria duellica, but they have to be examined to be sure. The size is a good indicator, though.

Some photos from the last month or so. Firstly, various mushroom species, I've no clue what they are, from Derry (click any of the photos to go through to my flicr account where there's a few more different mushrooms if you're interested):

Yes, it's natural light. I think I used flash on one photo but can't remember which one (don't think it's one of the ones here). I used a tripod and took long exposures (10-20 seconds) at f32 using a 50mm macro lens. That way I got everything in focus and the long exposure time allowed for plenty of detail and colour. When processing them, I boosted the black levels and contrast to make the background darker so they pop out a bit better.
