There never was any way of stopping them before, just now you can see that they've been there.

Personally I don't like this feature, I think we'll end up with an awful lot of paranoid Boardsies. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Meh, it's hardly bebo, who cares if your boards arch- nemesis can see how many people have thanked you, or what your signature is?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,983 ✭✭✭leninbenjamin

who cares? it's just the internet. just don't give out your real name or credit card details and you'll be fine. actually you can give them to me for safe keeping if you want.

human nature will have people looking in profiles just out of curiosity, and nothing else

maybe Cult can do something to stop your non friends or foes visiting profiles by way of the visitor cant access their profile.
Eg.you have the choice of the particular person who you dont want to view your profile page?
At the moment it could lead to members fighting with the foe or non friends and hells break loose imo.

And then they can just log out and view your profile, and you won't know they've visited.

There's never been a way to stop it. You could always check someones profile any time.

I've visited a few profile pages just to see what the fuss was about. I think when the novelty factor wears off no-one will bother with it.

The only problem I can see with it is people with grudges against one another leaving insulting and trolling comments on the profile page. Plus, Mods wont be able to visit every profile to check on things that break the site rules etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,084 ✭✭✭✭Stark

There's a report comment function on the visitor's page for situations like that.

    thats what im seeing myself.
It will be a lot more work for the mods to look up whos doing wrong when they are trying to do thier own mod forums.
you cant seem to report the foe looking at your profile.

There's nothing wrong with viewing someone's profile. The problem occurs when someone leaves abusive comments. That is why there is no option to report someone who has looked at your profile.

would an option for the recent vistors be a good idea?

No like I said above, someone looking at your profile is harmless that's why the option isn't there.

Exactly, just dont put anything in your (public) profile that may incriminate you!

well you can disable the message box for a group if you moderate one; should be a way to disable the message box in your profile if you prefer ¿

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43,045 ✭✭✭✭Nevyn

You can set your message box to friends admins and mods only.

Mod use the profiles to check on peoples posts to look for patterns this was how it was before hand only now you can see those who are visible visitors to your profile.

Yeah I usually just view people's profiles who come onto the forums I mod. Nothing malicious or evil about it. Loads of people view profiles, if you dont like it keep your profile blank. There's nothing stopping you from entering nothing :)

How do you know who has viewed your profile?

click your name at the top right corner of this page and then look at the lower right side of the profile page. It lists recent visitors

As Thaed mentions you have the option in your UserCP to enable messages only from your friends and mods/admins to be posted to it.

Anyone could always view it though. It's not your bebo page etc so just don't fill all your personal details out on it.

If you can install Firefox or similar on youir work computer you should be able to view the site correctly, <nerdspeak>your work computer's Internet Explorer install is buggy and is probably crashing on javascript invocation.</nerdspeak>

If you don't have the ability to install new programs, try downloading Portable Firefox and just run it without installing.

Alan Ford must have petitioned Microsoft to make viewing profiles illegal.

So my profile just says "This page has been viewed 3 times". It doesn't say who those people were. They were all me i think!

Do other people's profiles tell them WHO visited?

Only if they are logged in. Whoever viewed your profile did so while logged out, or using invisible mode.

If you view your profile while logged out, then it will show as a "view".
I'll visit you now, so you can see.

No. There isn't a way of stopping people seeing what you publish in public. That's one of the things about publishing things in public. Practically the defining thing.

All you have to do is not publish anything in public that makes you look like an utter idiot.

    Good luck with that.

As for bieing an idiot i dont think i am imo.
I think its good to show who you are as by way that your not lying about yourself imo.

Imo, It doesn't really matter if you know who's been visiting, but as said already, ignorance, sometimes, is a very blissful thing.

The main fear i see with that "Profile views" box is that people might start whoring around to increase how many times their profile has been viewed with that "click me to see 70 naked chics, no, srsly" shíte that you see written all over Bebo to bump profile views.

...A perfect example of trying to increase Bebo profile views can be found in my signature.

Also, has a charter been written up regarding what exactly you can write into the visitor messages or is it just a "common sense" rule?

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

    Common sense rule.

Basically your profile is a mini thread dedicated to you and which you mod (afaik).

I've just realised that I have one of those too.... well, thats going to be fun now isnt it :)

I really like the visitor messages thing. You can talk about anything (within reason) without worrying about going off topic.

Also I can see people getting to know others better this way.
