i dont reckon the points will change that much from previous years. As almost half of ireland has applied to medicine, human health and disease, pharmacy so i reckon points on other things will be slightly lower

But there is still the same amount of places to be filled, and people with high points don't just apply for Medicine. Also because of the economy less people are doing apprenticships or going straight to work so approx 2000 more people have applied to college. The Admin in Maynooth told me arts would go up by 20 points, the biggest increase in points they have had in a while, and that it would be the same for nearly every course accross the board except for building and development courses.
    Scary thought :(

how many out of the total CAO applications get one of there choices?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,986 ✭✭✭Craguls

All of them as long as they get the points and meet matriculation.

I wouldn't invest too much in those statistics anyway, they were published in February based on peoples first choices then. I know in my class alone alot of people switched their first preference based on those stats alone.

If your course has 300ish places like arts or most of the common entry ones tend to; major increases and decreases are unlikely, at most it'd be 20 either way.

Then again this is all speculation

so a course like neuroscience 'average intake 10' is that a highly popular course or not so popular?

It's impossible to tell. You'll just have to wait and see if you get a place like the rest of us.

Hard to say, to be sure.

I know in Trinity it's very popular but they only hand out places on a competitive basis after two years in the common entry course.

In UCD it's supposed to be next to impossible to get in that way, as with Pharmacology. So it's recommended you apply like you have to that set denomination.

I've just checked the prospectus though it says there's 20 places so that's just doubled your chances :P

I tend to read these forums often enough, with the results your expecting I'd be very surprised if you missed out on medicine. I'd say the AAAB should get you into neuroscience easily enough too. Points tend to jump up and down often enough though as you'll see here

    Year Points
    2008 435
    2007 470
    2006 465

    I got these off qualifax

Don't take my word for it though, I'm just a student like yourself!

So an intake of 10 is probably fixed?? :S that cant be right
    Why?

There are a lot of factors colleges consider, such as the number of potential employment opportunities. Some very specialist courses work better with small numbers and a very intensive student / teacher ratio. Specialist lab facilities etc. may be limited, and dictate numbers. Plus sometimes colleges prefer to have small groups of highly motivated students who will do very well, go on to postgrad, be highly sought after and therefore enhance the reputation of the course and the college ...
    logic123 wrote: »
Im sure they would try to ajust the number of seats accordinly to how many applied for the course...
Not necessarily, especially with specialist courses with high running costs.
    logic123 wrote: »
the number of intake for medicine is higher, is that because there is a higher demand for medicine than neuroscience?
Higher demand AND greater number of employment opportunities.

Quick question, just crossed my mind just now, but what happens, and just say it does, that you dont get the points you need for ANY of the courses you have down for your CAO, what do you do then? Can you apply for a course that the points you got suffice for and if theres places available? Just wondering. I should have filled in the level 7/6 course application... :(

This was answered somewhere on the first couple of pages of this thread.

Basically, if you don't get the points for ANY of the courses, you'll have to either repeat or apply again next year.

Anyway, here are my courses (all in UCD):

    1. Commerce with German
    2. Commerce with Law
    3. Commerce with Chinese Studies
    4. Science Omnibus
    5. Actuarial Studies
    6. Engineering Omnibus

    Nothing else.

Cyber waste - The handbook says something along the lines that on the 17th of August (i.e offers day) people will be offered there highest course possible on their CAO, but also on that day the CAO writes to people informing them that they did not/will not recieve any offers if they have not reached the required points of any courses.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,001 ✭✭✭p1akuw47h5r3it

Wen do we find out the points coarses are??

    Is it tomorrow?

  • Registered Users Posts: 213 ✭✭Hoku

First round of offers is on Monday 17th, so I think that's when you actually find out the points for the courses and where you will be attending.

  • Registered Users Posts: 782 ✭✭✭tootyflutty

Posted on Teletext at 6 am of the round one offers, or they are printed in the newspapers that sometiome after the offers are all accepted.
