Theres going to be some risk with any form of weapon issued, they are weapons afterall.

Batons have limited range but can be used and used and used. Having said that not everyone feels them and thats not because the Garda lacks strenght. If your drunk, coked up or just a big psycho lunatic you can take it no problem until your body physically gets damaged by it and stops. The pain will not stop you on its own.

Spray is a better option, for starters it has greater range with still being muti use. It also has an effect that most people will not be able to withstand because its not simple pain compliance however as said, one in ten is a lot of people. I remain concerned about cross contamination against the user and colleagues however on the other hand, cross contamination against a crowd would be a big bonus.

Tazer is another good option, it allows good distance for use but how good is it in close? That would be a concern. I dont believe its any greater a danger to people than any other option, in fact it probable has far less medium or long term effects than option A or B. Major drawback is that like a firearm it requires a degree of time and space to deploy and a big minus, is single use. In a situation where theres multiple targets you will not have time to re-arm. I know some can be used as stun guns so that would reduce its negative drawbacks.

At the end of the day I dont think the answer is what ONE item will we give or get. they all have strenghts and weaknesses that make them better or worse in certain scenarios. I think Tazers would be better when you have a stand off or distance situation whereas ASP or spray more in close unless standard stun guns are on the table????? wink wink. Personally I think a standrard stun gun is the best of both worlds as Gardai are by nature, experience and training a close and personal force. We dont go straight for weapons but try to arrest without force then restraint and finally when needed a tool. which means we would be too close to use Tazer anyway.

Having said that we wont get nor has anyone asked for stun guns so for the moment I think spray to everyone and tazer for backup units including (if possible) every patrol car.

BTW, Garda review has an online vote for arming at the moment. I would encourage all members to have a say considering management, GRA and media havent bothered asking us in over 30 years.

Oh and Chief, one of the hardest guys I ever worked with in terms of getting stuck in and taking people down was 5ft 7in and about 11 stone so height / weight isnt everything.

okm but it would still be much more expensive than cs spray. and the tasers are more lethal. yes the baton if not used properly can be fatal but if used in a safe manner i.e. not smacking someone across the head. the cs gas incapacitates but the taser can affect underlying problems e.g. hear problems even ones not known to the person so it should be used as a last resort, and anyway cant the baton and cs gas can be used as effectively?

It's all well & good to say that the baton is safe so long as you don't hit someone in the head, but in stressful situations where one or both parties could be moving it's easier said than done.

I don't think spray & baton is as effective as Taser. Adrenalin can cause people to keep going despite being hit & sprayed, this doesn't happen with Taser.
