Boots signage going up on the old Argos so can't be far from opening.

Someone said to me they won't be filling prescriptions there though which I found strange.

Presuming this is a bit like the Barrow Valley/Mr. Price/Dunnes Stores commercial agreement policy maybe?

Surprised that MacAuleys Healthcare don't have an exclusivity agreement for both phases of Fairgreen to prevent another healthcare retailer opening no matter whether it's non-prescription only; they both sell same product types like medical, beauty etc.; maybe this, sales only, no prescriptions, is best that can be done under whatever agreement is between centre management, MacAuleys and Boots.....

Vacant Homes Officer earning their crust lately with CAOs & identification of premises & properties which can be returned to social housing stock particularly in central parts of Carlow town but also in the county.

Latest CAO is for 52 Burrin St. https://carlow-nationalist.ie/2023/11/28/council-publish-plans-to-acquire-derelict-carlow-town-building/?fbclid=IwAR3jYItzB6pSEXz_t7C5DF-PJVdMx0on-A4qJwGBhL7-e3AC8rhvYLsSnUs

Tools robbed from a van parked on Coxs Lane; Friday the 24th of November 5pm.

4-5 youths in dark clothing seen acting suspiciously / fleeing the scene.

(Cynic in me suggests these "angles" are on social housing list, or their parents are, & the van belonged to the company developing the social houses on that site......)

Was walking the dog Saturday at SETU. Army bomb disposal and guards present. Security man told me they were disposing of very old and dangerous chemical from a lab. Buried it in the ground at rugby pitch and blew it up!!

The crowds in Boots is nuts

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,861 ✭✭✭Nokia6230i

Was wondering to post about this; I get they'll be paying rates, employing locals etc. but much like Chemist Warehouse I don't get the fuss; unsure if any local envelope opening politiicans & their on & off line fanboys & girls, and we know who they are, went but listening to a piece on the wireless yesterday there was more than enough enthusiastic seal slappers queuing ahead of opening.

    Embarrassing.

Yes more choice etc. but the excitement level should cause those involved to give their heads a wobble.

Haven't been to Boots, but Chemist warehouse is very good value.

We get our child an antihistamine. It's €17 in every chemist in town, but €10.50 in chemist warehouse.

A few other bits we'd be picking up are much cheaper there too, so I find it a huge help anyway.

Carlow Co. Development Partnership CLG/Ltd.'ve filed with Charities Regulator for 2022; assuming the CR've verified these figures that's some whack of p/t employees; 118.....

Like most such bodies, quangos, NGOs, charities etc. their aims etc., while noble & altruistic, are not clearly defined & quite vague

Income report is scant on detail with CR but with 118 p-t employees & 14 f/t employees across their various branches such as Be Kind Project in Perrys Cash & Carry Warehouse on Watery Lane (donations received for free; they then have sales with 4 days worth in past number of months in the Exchange building on Potato Mkt.; unsure if donors knew this was happening of if CCDP maintain, retain a list to seek consent to sell from....) and Failte Isteach (Free Conversational English classes from Elementary to Beginners/Basic to Intermediate & Advanced), Elderflower Club, Ukrainian Information Centre, JETS Hub on Burrin St., Askea House on Pollerton Rd., Chez Nous Womens Centre on Green Lane, Focus Rm. in Borris, HQ in Bagenalstown, various properties in other towns & villages in Carlow etc. various vehicles/vans & collabs with Carlow Co. Co. & other bodies incl. New Oak Community Centre etc. there must be a fair whack on wages & rent + utilities of all these buildings & premises; unsure how many CE & TUS employees; they're not counted as they're off the books due to being employed/paid for by Intreo/DEASP.

Am I the only one who thinks that putting the new traffic lights at Munnellys Service Station on the Kilkenny Road is a moronic idea?

I very much favored the widening of the junction but I would have thought a roundabout would have been a better choice than traffic lights.

  • Registered Users Posts: 348 ✭✭RossGeller

Completely agree. The Council do not know what they're doing.

I've been saying for years the traffic lights at Shamrock Plaza are insane. Every time you walk past it there's cars blaring their horns because they're not timed right. Will they do anything? No.

Those new traffic lights at Aldi are also a mess.

Where could I buy a Sky controller in Carlow town? Now that Argos is gone I have no idea. Really need one today.

Phone Fix on Tullow St. perhaps; try their mobile 0833369533

Mobile World on Tullow St. on R.H.S. nearby to Tullys 0857464441

Sherwoods & Swans should be open today; Currys & Electro City also; would imagine one of these options will see you sorted.

Bake Cafe on Tullow St., in the unit formerly Boscos Butchers on Tullow St./Charlotte St. is closing, has closed, as of today with immediate effect

Gwen Thomas has planning permission sought to erect a house in the gap on Barrack Street just opposite the Fairgreen exit. Looks like this will put an end to any possibility of opening up access to Carlow Shopping Center from Barrack Street now.

I think Gwen has fully given up on Carlow now (https://carlow-nationalist.ie/2020/05/05/developer-has-given-up-on-carlow-after-tk-maxx-refusal/).

I could see Carlow Shopping Center and the multistory being closed off as a 2 finger to the council at some stage, leaving a bigger eyesore than Crottys in the center of town.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,861 ✭✭✭Nokia6230i

If approved, if it proceeds etc., might that also in anyway affect the social housing development left & right of it?

How far back, behind the gate, does the site go? Almost parallel to the entry & exit barriers at Tullow St. is it?

Have never been inside it; suspect never publicly accessible; was, is, part of the My Carlow plan for the throughway to Potato Mkt. ultimately alright so this could be one in the eye if permission granted.....plan could, would, be dead in water.............owner might be flying a kite perhaps....?

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,396 ✭✭✭✭road_high

Yes. Just why? The round about maybe needed some widening but they work far more efficiently

Montly Homelessness Report is in for November 2023; majority of statistics're regional.

But for Carlow specific it's "Adults accessing emergency accommodation 20th-26th November 2023" from page 9 of the 12 page report https://www.rte.ie/documents/news/2024/01/c5e40a9a-8481-49a9-9093-7b40254f168f.pdf
