"Dude"

I'm sick of people on boards using "dude" in their posts. Somebody will say something and somebody else will reply by saying: "Dude your completely wrong" or "Dude we heard that last week". Is this a new phenomenon? Do the Dudesters use this word in real life? Has the Southern Californication of Ireland finally been completed? I'm sure the next few posts will start with "Dude".

Chill out man! That just aint cool.

God I know lots of people who say this IRL. Think it started out as a tongue in cheek thing but now it's a habit. I find it a little cringey sometimes but hey, I use ridiculous phrases too so who am I to judge?

Nothing wrong with 'dude', it stems from the use of the word by cowboys.

I generally say dude out of habit, don't think I use it in my writing (or typing). I don't see the problem with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 648 ✭✭✭Neo#

What would be a good greeting term? I tend to use man a lot. I hate when people say mate.

I remember "dude" becoming popular in the late 80s/early 90s - around the time of Bill & Ted, Wayne's World, "grunge", Beavis & Butthead etc. It's not a new thing.
I say it alot. I don't like the "k" thing in text though: "K I was in a restaurant in Stephen's Green and guess who I bumped into?" etc.

"His Dudeness, duder, or el duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing."

Just watched that last night, brilliant film.

I'll replace it with "à fhear" if you like.

Have to agree that hearing Irish people use the word 'dude' is about as naff as hearing someone say 'groovy' or 'cool man'.

The word first came to prominence (not general use) as far back as the early 70's when Scooby Doo was beamed into our homes and the veritable Shaggy used it in almost every other sentence.

For those of you who may not remember the original catoon see the attached link:

    http://www.metroactive.com/papers/sonoma/08.14.97/scoobie-9733.html

Other than Shaggy I think that the only acceptable use of the word dude must be from the Big Lebowski...where 'dudism' reigned supreme.:D

I dont say it at all, a few of my friends say it, but if I say it I just think it sounds slightly forced. I say man a good bit though

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Most of the time I use it, it's in an ironic manner.

i use dude quite a bit, generally when walking past dudes at work, used to be howsagoin, and the dude would say howsagoin back, with no response from either parties. I used to use dudette for the ladies, but did'nt go down too well. looking at dudess's name, sounds better, like godess, so i may start using that.

Ah there's nothing wrong with dude, tis a great word. Now like, there's a word that is annoying when overused. Especially when people actually put it into posts; "and I though that was very insulting, like."

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭Rb

There's nothing wrong with dude, I use it a fair bit when I'm with friends.

HOW AND EVER, saying "dude" with a country accent sounds retarded, as does saying it with a thick Dublin accent. No offense bog folk, but you should stick to your rural terms such as "a chara".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,986 ✭✭✭Red Hand

Likewise, saying it with any Irish/Non American accent sounds dumb.

"Naaaaw, lets wrangle up some beef on the hoof, Dudes! Yee-hawww!"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,191 ✭✭✭Feelgood

Well its far better than being called "Horse" thats for sure....spend a few weeks in the sticks and you will rather be called a "Dude" instead of a relation to Shergar...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

Yeah I'd usually say it a fair few times.

    Good word.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

I picked it up in the early 90's while overdosing on Beavis and Butthead. It stuck.

i reckon we should substitute the word "dude" with "vagina" in every day life.

next time anyone feels like sayin "dude", ya know what to do*....

*dont worry, its 100% tailored for the office environment, as well as schools and churches.

I use Dude all the time, even I have to admit I really should stop. Sometimes I use it when referring to girls as well

I use "dude" when I'm trying to show that I'm not being serious. The only time I hear it is from Americans.

the word has been around for decades, so hardly a new fangled foreign expression....

and yes, i use the word in real life.

if you're sick of reading it, then why don't you stop reading. or perhaps we should all adopt something thats more to your liking.

Sound, so I should now be able to say:

    "My dude is itchy"
"I need to tuck my dude into my sock"
"I need to get some cream for that red rash on my dude".
    "My dudes got a semi"

Ive only started to use it since i came to oz(been here over a year now). But i only use it when referring to guys whose name I dont know. i.e. "that dude over there just fell over" or "do you know x's friend , the kiwi dude"
Also say "no worries" a lot since i been here but its always felt forced saying "mate"
