Suggestion from me pending a question to everyone else... :p

I'm into guitar as well as cars and whenever I'm going to buy/consider a new car I always head here first:
    http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Guitar

I think this would be a brilliant feature to be available to Irish drivers - (relatively indepth) reviews from actual users rather than magazines or journalists. Installing the forum software is a breeze, but here's the question - are there enough users/reviewers to make it a success? Would any of you guys take the time and write something? Would you see any value in it?

I was doing a car website like this for my software development project this year and this is one of the features we looked at implementing, we found it would just not be worth it as you would have people who love a car for what it is and other people that hate a car for what it is leading to something like the alfa romeo threads do go like on boards.

It is a good idea but theres lots of flaws in it and it would have to be heavly moderated, thats what we found anyway

Not quite. Not for Firefox anyways. It's off centre and the next, previous buttons are in the middle whiel the close button is hidden.

Hmm, I can't reproduce that in Firefox on my machines (os x). Are you using XP?

I do want to accept reviews/comments/ratings at some point in the future. I think I'll wait for a few months before putting any work in this area. I want to get the basic right first.

I'd hope that the community would be self-moderating. It takes quite a bit of work but I've managed to do it with one of my other community sites.

How much does it cost to sell 1 car privately? Can't find any info on the site. You should make this information available before requiring registration.

I just had a look at your website, and I have a few suggestions.

    1) Don't allow cars on the website which do not display all the details and at least a photo of the car. I find it annoying when I'm searching and I wish to view a car, only to find the field displaying mileage/no of previous owners/etc to be blank, or else there are no photos accompanying the car.

    2) The maps at the bottom of the page don't seem to be working properly. I had to click the left arrow on the map to find the red balloon locating the garage.

    3) When you click on the photos, they take a few seconds to load. I do like the black background, but can the loading time be speeded up?
Also, let's say a car has 12 photos, and I only want to look at 2 or 3 photos, I have to load up these photos individually which takes time.

    4) I wouldn't bother devoting a section to car reviews. If you look at the cbg website, most of the reviews there are pretty useless- They vary, on some cars, to almost perfect scores to other posters who bring down the average by posting zeros etc. Also, most of the reviews on cbg are simply polls, with very few posters contributing any meaningful text as part of a review.
Remember, there are other sites that specialise in reviewing cars, you are there to sell cars.

It's free, I've made this more clear on the sign up page. Thanks.

Thank you. I'd imagine that would attract a lot more customers now hopefully. Just wondering will it always be free for private sellers?

I am. The pic comes right of centre on screen but the controls stay centred.

    Edit:
    That's it just fixed there!
    Edit 2:
Nope...broken again. must depend on the car. The Tom Hogan Shannon ones are working fine but there's a Scenic at Pat Keogh Limerick that still has the glitch.

A suggestion came to me from the dealer side of things. Allow a number of email addresses for the dealer and then have a "check box" option to select which salesman the email goes to when adding new cars. I'm sure all those info@garagexyz.ie addresses go into a black hole.

I just had a look at your website, and I have a few suggestions.

Thanks, the suggestions and feedback that I have received on this thread have been extremely useful.
    1) Don't allow cars on the website which do not display all the details and at least a photo of the car. I find it annoying when I'm searching and I wish to view a car, only to find the field displaying mileage/no of previous owners/etc to be blank, or else there are no photos accompanying the car.

You can easily restrict the search results to only show vehicles with photos. I'll consider adding a 'full details' search option so that you can restrict the results accordingly.
    2) The maps at the bottom of the page don't seem to be working properly. I had to click the left arrow on the map to find the red balloon locating the garage.

I see that in IE too. Thanks, I'll have a fix for that soon.
    3) When you click on the photos, they take a few seconds to load. I do like the black background, but can the loading time be speeded up?
Also, let's say a car has 12 photos, and I only want to look at 2 or 3 photos, I have to load up these photos individually which takes time.

The main photo loads first, then the next should load in the background. It probably can't get much faster than it is. I'm using a plugin called lightbox. I'm always looking for better photo viewers and may change in the future.

It is pretty low on my list of priorities at the moment. I do want to add community features to the site in the future, I'm not sure what they will be. I do want to focus on getting the selling cars aspect right first, as you suggest.

    Thanks for the feedback :-)

I see that too now. I'll hopefully have a fix for this sometime this week. I'm going to improve the [+] [-] feature soon too.

That's good. I plan on allowing multiple accounts per dealer for sales people to use. This would fit right it with that. I'll add it to the todo list.

Thanks, this was a bug in IE which has been fixed:

I'm glad you like it. Thanks for spreading the word, word of mouth is the best way for the site to grow.

I've added a new sorting option to carlist.ie, you can now sort your searched by the date the car was added.

This allows you to view the lastest used cars added to carlist.ie:

    http://www.carlist.ie/vehicles/*/*/*/added-d/flat/

This works with all searches, here are the latest used BMWs in Dublin:

Yeah, it was missing from mine all this time though ;). We have many features that the other sites don't have. I've outlined them in previous posts to this thread.

Why is it that you have to 'Renew your car' every 4 to 6 days ? Is this a nice way for you to boost your site traffic ? Doesn't seem to be a necessity to me

Renewing your car moves it to the top of the list and lets people know that it is still for sale.

Every car on site site has a 'Confirmed in stock about [time since renewal] ago' message:

the font makes it unusable for me.. small clear writing ftw.
apart from that, well done. the maps thing is very good. reminds of daft.ie and why its such a good site.

What is wrong with the font in your opinion? What font would you prefer?

    Thanks for your feedback.

One thing about Carzone that I don't like, and which would stop me using any site is the amount of fake ads on it. If you could do some searching/matching on the photos, so that people can't use the same photos, or stock photos as other ads that would be great, or where people can flag suspect ads to the admins and you take them down quickly.

Can you add a feature to exclude cars that have POA against them. I wouldn't waste my time calling them and don't want to wast time trawling through Ad's with POA.

Put a min value in your search and it excludes them.

I've added a link to the 'Renew your car' reminder email that will immediately renew your car. You don't need to log in to www.carlist.ie, so it should be a much quicker process from now on.

Would you thinkof putting in a report button like carzone has. I know this will probably increase your work load hugely but i doubt http://www.carlist.ie/vehicles/view/57184-audi-tt-dublin?r=/vehicles/108,475/*/*/*/flat/ is genuine at that price given thats it 20grand cheaper then it's nearest priced on
