Not in particular, i brought this up a while back as well, too many threads are closed because members don't agree on a subject and mods think the best thing to do is just lock the thread, its the easiest thing to do but not the best, do you use any other off topic/after hours forums on the net?
Cite some examples. Threads are usually only locked when posters simply cannot discuss the matter in a reasonable, 'chillaxed' way and have ventured into ab hominem arguments and rather than dishing out a few bans (Not that we jump to bans; we give plenty of warnings.), we just simply force posters to agree to disagree and move on to another discussion. How "relaxed" is a forum when everyone is biting the head of everyone else?
The charter has so many rules because of posters nitpicking "but it didn't say that... exactly..."
The main rule in there is: Don't be a dick. Simple as that. Everything else spells things out so that we all have a better idea of what "being a dick" is. We're quite flexible about the particulars. Always have been. Always will be.

    Now, back to Overheal #259:
I was away so I'll address the post now:
I threw a poll out there to try get some idea of whether it is an issue, and more importantly, one that the moderators could 'police'. It was generally agreed upon that we're not going to 'police' it. Report a poster you think is excessively posting 'qft' or '+1' and the moderators will look into it. It'd have to be pretty excessive though.

re: "@do you smoke weed' 'do you snort coke' 'do you shoot heroin' 'do you support marijuana legislation' 'does this dress make my dog look fat'.... lets keep the threads nice and varied"
The forum and its content are what you make it. I really don't like closing threads unless it gets to a ridiculous stage ("do you take vitamin C?", etc.)
Solution: You create new threads. You lead the sheep.

the mods dont choose the topics discussed here.

feel free to start changing the face of the forum by starting new topics any time you like.

The moderators should look at this page, it might teach them

    good addition to the thread.

    Credit to the Mods.

Took a look at this thread for the first time today, after gettin my 3rd infraction, I get what they mean now about arguments descending into farce and I'm starting to appreciate how vigilant they have to be. I've been guilty of a fair few of the things mentioned above, But have always found the mods to be fair, and I think they are doing a legend job of it.

    Happy Christmas to yis all.
    Keep up the good work:)

Yeah i'll have to agree with the posters saying the mods should chill out a bit.
This is the 'After Hours' forum after all. When ya think of after hours chat ya think of pub chat. When ya walk into this pub ya get handed a f**king charter and updates on a regular basis.
My latest 'infraction' was for repling Your Ma to a favourite body parts question. Now I have seen Yore Ma used in a lot less relevant situations, a lot in this thread back a few pages.
I wasn't even the only person to list Yore Ma on the thread, but the only one to get an infraction.
Anyway I don't really care about that, could have easily been the mod was having a bad day, maybe he had a wedge up his hole, maybe thats just the way he is,
Ill finish as I started by echoing the point of others the mods should relax a bit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

how should the mods be then?

its all well to say things should be this or that, but seriously, give us more info.

we shoudl relax a bit, but how relaxed. what should we allow?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭Pj!

Allow general pub chat and banter.

Obviously anything meant in bad taste or humour shouldn't be allowed.

I don't think anyone should be banned or infracted for trying a bit of humour without offending or hurting anyone. Is that not a fair statement for an 'After Hours' forum?

Look. Last thing I expected was a politicians answer to my short post.

I am not against you, your back isn't the wall so you dont have to answer like that.

    Anyway...
Yeah fair enough nobody could moderate perfectly, but try to keep it reasonably consistent.

LOL ... that isn't WWM with his back against the wall by a long shot, he's just probing to get a better sense of what you think about those things ...

Does he want me to write out a new charter? That is unrealistic. (edit: dont take that too seriously, just my style)

Look I don't know anyone on here and am only new. I thought I might add my mind to the others on this thread to improve the place. After all the poll suggests quite a lot of people think it could be changed for the better.

So I'll leave it with my suggestion to be more consistent.

In my opinion, this is what the charter for AH should be
    The Golden Rule:
    There is no free speech!
-This is a privately owned website. You do not have the right to say whatever you want on here. You are expected to obey the rules just like anyone else. Not following the rules will get you banned. It is very simple. You are allowed to discuss anything as long as it doesn't break the following rules.

    Advertising
    - Topics/posts that contain this will be both edited and locked. If you wish to buy add space, contact advert@boards.ie .

    Racism
    - Topics/posts containing such will be edited/deleted accordingly.

    Porn
    - Topics/posts containing such will be deleted on sight. This is a severe offence. The minimum ban handed out will be one month. Permanent bans will also be handed out for this. If you are linking to an external website that might contain "newspaper" nudity or contains sexual reference, please make sure you mark it "Not safe for work"

    Phone numbers
    - Posting other people phone numbers is a bannable offence. You should never post your own number on a thread as it is not guaranteed to be safe.

    Personal Abuse
    - Posters who abuse others on here will be banned. Permanent bans will be handed out on a first offence if a moderator feels it is warranted. There is no argument on this one. Abuse someone and you will be banned. Calling someone an idiot is abuse. Don't attack the poster, attack the post. Posting PM's publicly without consent could be met with harsh consequences, especially if they do not have any place in the discussion.

    Drug Talk
    - Discussion of drugs is allowed. Telling people where to buy or requesting that information isn't allowed.

    Threads on Soccer
    - There is a soccer forum. Posting about soccer here just because you don't have access to the soccer forum will result in the thread being locked and the user possibly being banned. You may apply for access on the Soccer Access Request forum.

    Threads discussing Illegal Activities
Any threads or posts advocating illegal activities or asking for help in such activities will be deleted. You can also be banned for this.

    Reporting Posts
Any thread or post that contravenes the charter should be reported. When reporting a post, make sure you have good reason. Someone disagreeing with you is not a troll, not all arguments are abusive etc. Abusing this feature is frowned upon. If you report a post, it is always a good idea to say so in a thread. It is not required though, but it does reduce the number of repeated reported posts.

Registering a New Account to Circumvent a Ban
    - This will get all accounts site-banned.

    ALWAYS READ THE CHARTER!
The charter contains all the rules and guidelines. The charter may be updated at any time. Make sure you are up to date.
This is a requirement, and ignorance is not an excuse. There are different charters for every forum on Boards.ie, and reading them will prevent any problems. Items marked in red have been updated recently.

Also i'd like to point out that every single thread in AH could be more suitable in another sub forum so it does seem a bit pointless putting this in the charter. Don't get me wrong, i don't want to talk about football in AH, i'm just saying.

The reason for that specific rule was because people who were banned from Soccer were using AH as a substitute. It needed to be spelt out clearly for people.

You took the "yore ma" thing too far. That is why you were given the infraction.

When I put that rule in place, almost every thread was being spoiled with yore ma this and yore ma that. It was basically ruining the flow of the threads, so it needed to be stopped.

Have a look at the date of that post and then take a look at threads from the same date.
You'll see what I mean then.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭Pj!

It was only yesterday. A search shows 6 or 7 (maybe more) posters stating "Yore Ma" in After Hours but I only see one infraction. A search through the last week would show up a lot lot more (but I couldnt be arsed).

Anyway, as I said, it doesn't bother me a whole lot, i'm not banned or anything, but still. Just requoting my above post, consistency would be cool.

And saying "Do Not Post In This Thread Again" just didn't seem like proper modding. If I had anything to say to you, which I did (saying sorry for posting at the same time as that threat) I would say it in a private message, if I had anything to offer to the thread, which I did, I should be allowed post it (which I did).

I didn't mean the date of that thread.
I meant the date of the amendment I made to the forum charter.

Edit: You edited your post while I was replying. Stop posting at the same time as me :)

Anyway, banning people from specific threads is nothing new. It has been done hundreds of times in the past.

You basically spammed the thread before it even got off the ground and you then proceeded to argue with me.
Both of which are against the charter.

with regards the charter, its there as a general out line. we dont 'enforce' the charter to the absolute letter of the law. to do so would result in everyone being banned on a daily basis :)
we try and mod to the 'spirit' of the charter. its a common sense approach. it works for us.
but we can use it when we need to. this is called modding ina chilled out way, but if someone acts like a ****tard, they will get banned :)

I think, as a whole, AH is fine as it is at the moment.
6 of the 7 mods have done a spot on job in this forum, the other one at times has been over eager or dare I say, a bit "power mad", but it's nothing we haven't seen from mods before and it's nothing we won't see in the future.
6th said in another thread that a good mod shouldn't stand out too much, this is something I fully agree with and there's only one mod that really seems to want his presence known. That's not too important though, considering there's 6 others around that are doing an absolutely great job on the forum.
Also, that's not to say that the mod in question is doing a bad job, just may be over-doing the job a bit.

Again,AH as a whole is running fine, it's growth in popularity has brought along more thin skinned/over sensitive people along with a rise in the amount of idiots, but this is something we've to adapt to as it's something that's going to increase as time goes on and Boards popularity continues to grow. Lately there's been less "How many times a day do you take a sh1t" type threads which is certainly a good thing, and I'd definitely like to see a quick end to those type threads in the future, as they tend to attract a certain type of poster and it's kept on the front page for longer than it deserves.

There's a good "flow" in the forum though and I can't see any reason to change that at the moment.

That's a trend with the Internet as a whole (Not arguing, defending, or anything - just commenting/agreeing as it's beyond the scope of this thread for the most part - although, as above, we tend to be liberal with the charter and it leads to "inconsistency" or "flexibility" depending on which mood your in.)

    Anyways...

Do as I do: roll your eyes and move on to the next thread.
I can only imagine that the threads are created because: People want to know more about each other and because we have a number of exhibitionists. There's nothing new there and nothing 'wrong' that we should enforce rules down their throats / 'police'.
I've locked a handful of these threads (Much to the dissatisfaction of others) only when there are simply too many or they otherwise get out of hand.
What way should we deal with them and on what grounds, in your opinion?
