Anne Frank museum near enough to Madame Tusauds, on the banks of the canal. Beware the queues are big enough but well worth a visit.

Hi All. I am off to Amsterdam next week from Thurs to Sunday. Will be doing the usual touristy things such as anne frank, red light etc.

Just wondered if anyone has any tips on interesting places see, or things to do that are not listed in guide books?

    Thanks.

Being Dutch I still havent got round to seeing the Ann Frank museum but got to see the Van Gogh last year, I thought it was excellent, strolled around for 2 hrs or so , and topped it off with a glass of wine and some Apple pie.

Take in the canal tour, its quite nice to see Amsterdam through the canals, especially on a nice morning.

I also would suggest a walking tour, I actually had walking tour recently of the Red light with a cousin of mine who lives in Amsterdam for 30 years. No sex shows involved but the area has a lot of interesting history.

Alot of what Amsterdam revolves on is Sex and Drugs so if thats not for you get out and see other places, places like Haarlem, Leiden and Delft are lovely towns.

    Was there recently -
    (1) Thought the heineken experience was okay
    (2) NEMO (science Centre), mostly for kids, Was lashing rain one day so me and the G/f went and had a great craic.
    (3) Nautical museum near nemo, didnt go myself but looked okay
    (4) Ice bar was a waste of money, wouldnt do that again
    (5) Hermitage art gallery
    (6) Zoo/Botanical Gardens
    (7) Lots of live music places, we went to Paradiso one night, its used to be a church now converted for concerts.

In the nights we used to enjoy sitting outside the bars watching all the stoned people walk by and people trying to be conspicuous going in and out of the windows.

The free walking tour is great. It's a good way to get to know your way around the city and find all the important sites, you can leave it at any time but it's good to follow it all the way around the first time so you know where everything is, they give a really good history of the city and show you things you would have easily overlooked.

You can also take a day trip to Brussels. There's Madam Taussauds on Dam Square and Ripleys Believe it or Not near Central Station.

Check out the Boom Chicago comedy improv show, very funny. Also, the Amsterdam dungeon tour is very good.

Yea the Anne Frank house is good. Lenghty queues so try get there early to avoid frustration. I didnt go to the Van gogh museum.

If you go to the Damstradt , there is loads of outlets that cater for tours. Theres loads to pick from from the Heineken Brewery to the Ajax stadium.

You should go to the Zoo aswell, thats good craic

There is a great club in the Liedseplein square called Escape.

    Have fun!

Good god. Why would you recommend a 3 hour train journey to be rewarded with the most sterile city in the world?

haha you must of been off your trolly when you went to escape because its on rembrantplein and not leideplein! and also its not the greatest of places, full of tourists and overpriced to get in and buy drinks, try studio 80, smaller place but cheap drink and amazing sound , mainly minimal techno, minimal electro and house they play! inbetween escape and studio 80 is ke kroon, free entry always and always a good crowd and decent music too. paradiso and melkweg and sugarfactory on leidseplein are good and lots of good bars around too. the pub crawls are always worth the money ! anymore questions just ask, i work on rembrantplein and live in amsterdam so i know alot about this place.

    Hey all.
Im heading to Amsterdam in two weeks time with a few lads from college.
Arriving on the 14th. Should be in Amsterdam for about 8 o clock in the evening.
    Leaving on the 17th.
Anybody have any suggestions on what I should visit over there?
Did a bit of googling and there seems to be so much.
The Van Gough museum, Anne Frank house, Red Light District and Vondelpark are a definite at the moment.

Heineken Brewery is also worth a visit. Amsterdam ArenA also.

Was there for staff party a few weeks ago, thought it was an awful pile of arse to be honest.

There is ice-skating down somewhere near Leidseplein for anyone coming over here in the next few days. Walking tours still operating too and well worth doing.
Best advice is to just wander and see what you find, there really is lots to do here and it's very compact so don't worry about getting too lost.

It's about -7 here at the moment so make sure to bring warm clothes.

It's helpful if you can elaborate on what's not so good.
Saying something sucks is too subjective, people have different tastes.

Stayokay vondelpark is a nice hostel to stay at and very clean. You could visit the Anne Frank museum, the torture museum, a diamond museum (near Vondelpark entrance) some windmills (1 hour trip) and there is a scooter tour around the city http://amsterdam.mokumevents.com/guided-tours/scooter-tour. You can rent scooters by yourself but its easy to get lost with all the canals (a compass is no help)!

    Okay.

It was very formulaic, the acting was terrible, the jokes weren't funny and the food was atrocious, really really atrocious.
