Wonder did the old iPod charger (not apple made, 3rd party btw) do some hardware damage or feck up the iPhone in some way (e.g. causing above "This device is not made to work with iPhone" error) which in turn casuing current issues?

Probably the cause of the problem did you check the voltage and current on this to see if it is the same as the iphone charger

There are numerous reports of Ipod chargers and bases destroying iphones the connector is the same but the current and sometimes the voltage is not

But sure Apple will check the warrenty on it first which the warrenty wont be active.

Thats why I said act stupid tell them you can't activate it got it as a gift etc

If you are convinced it is ****ed you could kill it completely then into the apple store and tell them it wont turn on.

    You might get lucky

Surprise surprise No output stats on the 3rd party charger (input the same bar 0.15A on iphone and 0.1A on 3rd gen charger)

Am I goosed? Any chance its a software conflict of ome sorts (that error message is throwing me)

3rd gen ipods like this one had a 12volt charger the iphone is a 5 volt charger

Even without that using a cheap chinese ebay charger is not a good idea as they are not quality controlled they could be outputting anything.

It sounds like you have fried the phone I'm afraid

Yeah but got it for 5th gen iPod Video and can kinda remember looking out for the above and it didn't fry the iPod...also whats strange is that it still charges my iPhone...

Probably hoping for the best. Will bring into an apple store and see what they can do for me (or not)

If I was to buy another (hypothetical like) ca I pay cash?

The iphone seems to be less tolerant than the ipods of voltage differences i would imagine that the one you are using is supposed to be 5 volt but in reality it is a little higher the ipod could deal with it but the iphone can't.

how worn is the iphone do you still have the At&t card

If apple don't take cash AT&T store definitely do tell them you are buying it as a gift.

    Hey everyone,

Does anyone have any latest info on when the iPhone is likely to be released in Ireland??

I heard from someone working in an O2 shop in dublin that O2 are planning to hold off on its release until close to xmas this year to maximise interest?

Has anyone heard anything along these lines??

Im off to the states soon and im just wondering whether to bother getting one over there or not?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I've finally got around to unlocking my phone today with an xsim (got from the uk, works very well), I'm trying to set up edge.

Has anyone got tescomobile working with edge/gprs on the iphone? Customer support weren't much help, I've tried putting tescomobile.liffeytelecom.com as the APN, but no luck so far. I've also tried o2's settings since tesco piggyback on o2, but nothing happened.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Guys,

Can someone help me out please! It's a question of a different nature. I'm trying to sync my hotmail account with my iPhone?!! Does anyone know what I need to make the settings to make this happen. Just to be clear I do realise that hotmail are not one of those company's who publish there smtp/pop details freely although I have been subscribed to Hotmail Plus for the last few years and with this I am pretty sure that I should be able to sync my iPhone with it, as I have already done with Entourage. If someone can clear this up for me is would be much appreciated as hotmail is my main personal email account.

    Thanks
    z.

I heard from one of the main guys in Apple here that they were talking about April as a possible release date, and are currently working on the backend systems for an Irish rollout at the moment, but with no date set in stone, It doesn't matter when they are released the hype will be massive and so will the uptake on the iPhone.

There is NO WARRANTY on iphone unless Offically activated. Your warranty only starts then.

Oooeeerr, might have spoken too soon. Upgraded to 113 over the weekend and all was fine. Phone is now completly dead. Not responding to anything. Have it in to the wall charger at the moment hoping that it needs maybe an hour or so just in case it had fully discharged (though I don't think it should have had as it spent most of the day attached to the PC).

Has anyone else seen this? (it wasn't dropped or anything, and had been a fine 112 OTB US iphone prior to the weekd, iphonesimfreer working on it since early Jan)

    Hi Dan

I'd like to see them enforce that against consumer legislation - the product must be in a condition fit for the use described (or something like that), it would have to work as a phone at the very least under the network for which it was purchased.... When I bought mine in the north no one said I had to activate it (before I completed the contract, paid and left with the phone), so if it was faulty they'd have to repair it at the very least.

It would be fun to test this.

    Folks,
I don't post here much, but have been reading pretty constantly since November when I got a 1.1.2 iPhone in the US. Just want to respond to the unlockthatiphone posts. I think people have been going over the top criticising them.

I received my Stealthsim last Friday. I know some people might want regular email updates (or a tracking system) on the status of their order, but I've been happy with the updates given by Dan on these pages. He's been upfront on the status, and the delays they experienced. He and cdebru (SP?) are responsible for most of the informative and problem-solving posts on this thread, and I think we should all be thankful for guys like these!

I've no connection with the site or Dan - I'm just thankful that there is someone who had the patience to help all of those who bother to be polite in their posts.

    Cilldara.

everyday contract of sale - they offer a price, you accept, you pay, they provide goods, contract completed. Goods must be of merchantable quality and fit for the purpose sold. Nothing to do with carrier contract.

has anyone found a fix for the sms sending error.

I've tried everything at this stage

    - the *5005* trick
    - taking the sim out and putting it back in

I'm getting so frustrated at this stage

I had this problem over the weekend (with vodafone). In the end, I'm not too sure what actually solved the problem. I tried the *5005* line but got "Setting Successful - Message Centre Address - No Address" and that didn't solve anything.

I did put the sim into another phone, send a text from that, then put it back into the iphone and it worked then. Since then the iphone has frozone once, and required a reset (hold power and home for 10 seconds).

So it's working now, but not too sure why.

Apple also have terms and conditions and when it comes to the iphone they dont care. There was a US Guy with a fully active at&t contract and the phone was NOT jailbroken, But he did upload a ringtone via garageband his phone then stopped working, the sim card reader in the iphone went he brought it into the shop they sent it for repair they refused at he had a 3rd party ringtone.

Anything bought in the North of Ireland is governed by the law of the United Kingdom, not of the Republic of Ireland. That said, European law would supersede national laws in any case.

Regardless, UK and ROI consumer law is very similar anyway. If a product develops a fault within a reasonable period (no, 12 months is not set in stone), then a repair, refund or replacement must be issued.

Important point here though, is the customer must complain to the place of purchase - not to the manufacturer, since the contract of sale is between the customer and the place of purchase, and not with the manufacturer.

In other words, those who purchased in the UK should return to the UK stores of purchase with their faulty Iphones, and those who purchased in the US should return there (note: US consumer law may be very different - I am not familiar with same).
Apple also have terms and conditions and when it comes to the iphone they dont care.

It doesn't matter Dan, Apple can say what they like, the consumer's contract of sale is with the shop, and it's up to the shop to act legally.

Who Dan? Apple? As I said, Apple have nothing to do with the contract of sale between a consumer and vendor.
