I'm also living in the broadband backwater that is Charlo. I'm starting to wonder if the Adelaide Rd. exchange will ever be upgraded.

Don't be fooled by the phone number test on Smart's website btw, it claims we're serviced by the Ship St. exchange but it's incorrect. Smart can't provide broadband to our area. I know this because I tried getting it about a week ago, went through the order phase and everything, then they rang me a few days later to tell me it's a mistake on their website. Pretty annoying.

As far as I know the max we can get with any provider at present is 3mb.

Yeah, tried ordering SMART a year and a half ago and only after a few weeks of to-ing and fro-ing did Smart admit/realise that they provide us with broadband.

So we're on the Adelaide Road exchange? You'd think with Mercer next door etc. that the lines would be decent spec

    Who are you with Phlann?

Just posted this in a new thread without seeing this one:

Live in Naul, couldn't get Ice before due to line of sight issues but Digiweb mobile broadband was good, supposed to be over 5 meg connectin
For the first month I get D/L speeds of about 150kb/s, a damn sight better than dial up.
Recently, however, it has become unstable and can stop me from using the net for a few hours at a time.
I just ran the speed test on www.irishisptest.com and got these results:

    39.2ms avg. Jitter
    49.5% avg. packet loss
    99.8kbps D/L
    31.9kbps U/L
    Round trip time 130ms
    Max delay 322ms

Can someone Interpret these results for me?

Would getting an aerial to attach to the card in the router help?

    WellyJ,
What Eircom package is giving 49megs down and 10megs up as your post implies, or is this a bit of creative editing?

    Walker,

I'm about to jump ship from BT to NTL - they say i'm in the 12meg area, Do you have torrent throttling issues? (if you use torrents obviously!)

My thoughts exactly. Although I'd imagine they've got something rigged to give them good speeds. Ridiculous that 5-10 minutes from the centre of the capital city we can't get more than 3mb/s... can't get a straight answer out of anybody re: upgrading the exchange, seems like it might not happen any time soon.

I'm with esat currently but about to head over to Magnet who can give me the same speeds with no download cap and no contention ratio for roughly the same price. Or so they claim.

For my 3mb, 66Euro per month connection on www.irishisptest.com i get:
    Download: 1.07Mbps
    Upload: 49.8 kbps
    QOS: 66%
    Jitter: 67.2
    Packet loss: 0

I have NTL Ultra, 12meg down 1meg up costs €46/month as far as I can tell. Im thinking of changing to the MAX Pack
for €89/month. It has local/national phone calls, digital TV,and 12 meg BB. Anyone else got this and how good is it?
Every time I ring sales in NTL I get a slightly different story.

ntl are currently in the middle of a huge upgrade to their network. on occasion, your speed will be double to what you currently are paying for.

in the coming months, your speed will double permantly on the condition you sign up to a new contract for 12 months with them.

    3mb is becomming 6mb.
    6mb is becomming 12mb.

prices will not increase at all.

download limits are also being raised. 120gb per month limit for 12mb.

so over the next few weeks/months your speed will be normal and sometimes double.

    :) enjoy.
