I like Tommy Tiernan, but he's been on tv so much you don't need to go to a gig to have seen the whole act. I'd also add Jason Byrneto the best list, although anytime I see him I always get the feeling that he's forgotten to take his medication.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19 barbaraw19

Oh yeah jason byrne. Forgot about him. Liked the show anonymous. Never seen him live though. I'd imagine he'd be good.

Tommy tiernan: Miss!!! Too many jokes centred around religion. I couldn't listen to that accent for long funny man or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,276 ✭✭✭damnyanks

Really dislike that american guy who was raised here. He isn't horribly unfunny, but he sure isnt funny. His jokes are all pretty much "I'm american, Ireland..."

Alot of people in your worst section are probely my favorites except Des Bishop + Dave McSavage but I also love Dara O' Brien and ton more just can't remember there names lol :o

Best for me would be Tommy Tiernan....and I've gone from thinking Jason Byrne was a big weirdo to thinking he's a really funny big weirdo.

Worst Ed Byrne. I don't think he was ever funny but he's getting worse if that's possible. Surely they could find someone better for the Panel.

Karl Spain for the worst list. The only thing he says is "I've been single now for a bout 3 stone" or whatever. Yeah it was funny the first time I heard it but get some new material. Dylan Moran for the best list for sure the man is completely insane. Black books was absolutely brilliant and his stand up show monster (think that was the name correct me if I'm wrong) was great too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭hoooooooot

dnt like jason byrne, the best are tommy tiernan dara o briain and podge nd rodge if they count!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 603 ✭✭✭BeatNikDub

I would recommend people to not judge Jason by his tv shows. Go see him live and you will leave with sore cheeks from the laughter.
The man is mad - MAD!
Oh and dont sit near or at the front. ;)

Tommy Tiernan used to be one of my favourites but i think his act has gone downhill since moving stateside.
He will be back later this year playing gigs though so i will still go and see him back here again.

Dylan Moran has to come out on top for Black Books alone.

And big ups to PJ for going from a support act to Jason Byrne 5 or 6 years agao to having his own show which gets better every season. Jake Stephens - nuff said.

Dont forget the Cat Laughs in Kilkenny! Acts announced 2th April!!!

If Bill Bailey was irish he would be in this list also.

Oh the apres match lads too. Show is hilarious but the chap who does the german character is brilliant "it was outrageous like a malfunction" Have seen this live at a stand up gig and one of the best laughs ive had.

Love Neil Delamare and Colin whatshisface from the panel, and obviously Dylan Moran and suprisingly enough Dara O'Briens DVD is very good this year, oh and David O'Doherty.

Hate Hate Tommy Tiernan and Jason Byrne.

Like: Andrew Maxwell, Neil Delamare, Colin Murphy, Dara O'B, Dylan Moran, David O'Doherty
Dislike: Maeve Higgins, Jason Byrne, Tommy Tiernan, Ed Byrne

Pauline McGlynn (sp?) falls in the middle - great in Fr. Ted, decent on The Panel...don't think she counts as out and out comedian though (hence the middle, otherwise like)

    🤪

Here here!!!!! He proved as much when I saw him in England and he proceeded to slag us off to the British for a full 40 minutes to rapturous applause - famine jokes included - any Irish person would know why this was wrong.

I like Dylan Moran myself, Dave McSavage is an insult to the word 'comedian' and Ed Byrne? Well ?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Deirdre O'Kane doesn't really do anything for me either.

I heard a lot of good things about Jason Byrne but I saw him on the Royal Variety Performance and he didn't go down well at all. Maybe it was nerves or something??

PJ Gallagher gets my number 1 vote! :D

I do find that the people doing stand up in the Ha'penny Bridge Inn are more likely to reduce me to tears (in a good sense) rather than those who seem to have managed to make a name for themselves as 'comedians'...there are often really funny people hidden away at open mics and the like...pity, those who deserve to be up there aren't.

Worst has to be Ed Byrne I like Jimmy Carr and Andrew Maxwel but he needs new material

Nobody in the world likes Dave McSavage.

Remember a few years back his Ma tried to have him killed. Now *that* I laughed at.

    G'wan Mrs. McSavage!

I have to say, Kevin McAleer is an absolute genius of a comedian. Quite possibly one of the finest Ireland has to offer, and he just doesn't get any of the recognition he deserves.

I'd seriously recommend everyone to see his stand-up, it's just brilliant in the kind of wandering story / surreal absurdity kinda way.

Des Bishop is easily the worst.

Yeah I went to see him last week, by chance (won tickets) and he was hilarious. Highly reccomend

I saw Dara O'Brian stand up show. Really funny! :D Ardal O'Hanlon was V. good too.
Worst is probably Tommy Tiernan. He's only got one joke, Slagging off the church............its not funny anymore!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 Ladilia

Best: Tommy Tiernan (surprised alot of people don't like him..), Ardal O Hanlon, PJ Gallagher, Jason Byrne, Neil Delamare, Dylan Moran (legend!!) Dara O' Briain, Deirdre O Kane, David O Doherty.

Worst: Ed Byrne (the definition of s**t), Des Bishop (even though he isn't irish but i hate him anyway) Brendan Grace.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,488 ✭✭✭pikachucheeks

I'd definitely agree that Dylan Moran is the best.
He's hilarious, and Black Books with Bill Bailey is brilliant.
I know Bill Bailey isn't Irish, but he's my favourite comedian right now.
As for Des Bishop?-I never thought he was funny, same goes for Brendan Grace.
I've seen a bit of Tommy Tiernan on tv ; Some of the material was funny but I don't like the way he has to resort to shouting and swearing to make a joke.

He's an up-and-comer, but Paddy Courtney gets my vote. He did the intro for Podge & Rodge at Vicar Street, very funny.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 387 ✭✭Dark Artist

Tommy Tiernan and Neil Delamere (or hower u spell it) are my top picks at the moment.

The worst has to be Ed Byrne. That guy makes me cringe every time.... literally pianfull to watch, sorry mate.

I think Des Bishop is quite funny actually. He's no Tommy but he's definitely no Ed.

Kevin McAleer, the best by far, his slots on Nighthawks(?) were fantastic.

Dylan Moran - you haven't seen anything until you've seen him live in person.

Worst, for me, is Ed Byrne and Tommy Tiernan. Hate his jokes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 226 ✭✭SlinkyToo

Worst - Any Comedian who releases a DVD for Xmas. A little tip, if you are going to publicise a DVD, at least show clips with jokes in it.

Prime example - PJ Gallagher talking about dating... it was funny when Bob Monkhouse did it in the 50s.

Interesting how Jimmy Carr is liked over here... he is universally hated in the UK.

He would appear at the opening of a paperbag just to get his face on telly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 123 ✭✭BreeVdK

My favourites are Jason Byrne, Deirdre O'Kane and Brendan Grace. Went to see Jason Byrne early this year and it has to be the funniest 90 minutes ever. He was brill. Had been to Des Bishop the week before and he was total crap. Tired of the 'i'm just off the boat from America and I'm trying to get to know the Irish bla bla bla', apparently, he makes fun of the Irish when he does his UK gigs ! He came here when he was 12 or something, he is now 30, hello??!!

Hate all others especially Maeve O'Higgins (she supported Des Bishop and was so crap!), Alan Carr (not one bit funny), Dara O'Briain (a big-headed pain)......

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,900 ✭✭✭rannerap

I love tommy tiernan!cant believe so many people dont like him!i dont see why no one likes his accent either

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

I love Tommy Tiernan, Jason Byrne, Andrew Maxwell and Neil Delamere.

Ed Byrne is probably one of the worst comedians around. He still acts like a student with dodgy jokes about vegetables. Also all female comedians, especially Maeve Higgins are also appalling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,332 ✭✭✭earlyevening

I think Jarlath Regan is very funny. He needs more stuff though. I keep hearing the same jokes. Very irishy stuff and a slow delivery makes it for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 699 ✭✭✭ashyle

Love- Andrew Maxwell, Dara O'Briain, Jarleth Regan, Neil Delamere, Maeve Higgins, Des Bishop (he's hot)

Hate- Tommy Tiernan (just find him embarassing to watch, he acts hysterical and thick), Ed Byrne, Dave McSavage (same old same old material), Ardal O'Hanlon (loved him as Dougal tho)

Best : Dylan Moran (by about 1million miles)

Worst : Tommy Tiernan (a national embarrasment with his gombeen schtick).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,031 ✭✭✭Lockstep

I honestly dont find McSavage that bad.

He was on the late late show and was allright.

Did anyone ever see the Viz competition where people had to send in pictures of Jimmy Carr at corporate events. it was hilarious. he was in about 200 different ones.

    jimmy carr is irish??

but he was on parkinson a few years back, tellin some really nasty irish jokes:confused:

    Best:
Dermot Morgan, Tommy Tiernan (most of the time),
Jimmy Carr (if we're including him), Dara O'Brein, Mario Rosenstock,
some of Pat Shortts stuff is worth mentioning, Rats from the flats...

    Worst:
Brendan Grace (outside of Father Ted), all them clowns on 'The Panel', especially Delamere
and the washed up loser Colin Murphy, Ardal O'Hanlon(outside of Father Ted), Patrick Kielty, BRENDAN O'CARROLL, was Ritchi Kavanagh ever actually considered a comedian?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 912 ✭✭✭chakotha

Best: Dara O'Briain, Dylan Moran, Andrew Maxwell, Jason Byrne

    Worst: Neil Delamere, Ed Byrne

Tommy Tiernan was in best but have gotten too used to him

Any links to anything by Kevin McAleer? Haven't seen him in years but he was funny!

Worst: Jimmy Carr - I could do what he does. Tiernan - Liked his first DVD, he just annoys me know.

Andrew Maxwell is one of my favs

Best : Jason Byrne, and another vote for Kevin McAleer.

    Worst: Tiernan and Ed Byrne.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,201 ✭✭✭✭Basq

Best: Neil Delamere, Dara O Briain, Tommy Tiernan, Dylan Moran.
Worst: Too many to name.. Andrew Maxwell, Brendan Grace, Dave McSavage, Pat Shortt, Ed Byrne, Ardal O Hanlon, the 3 from 'Naked Camera', the 2 from 'I Dare Ya'.. i've loads more!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 105 ✭✭enner43

I think Dara O Briain is brilliant. Love watchin him. Went to see Ardal O Hanlan in DCU over a year ago and thought he was good but since then he has just kept repeating that material over and over again to such an extent that i cant stand him now. And maeve higgins is not funny at all even on naked camera shes the worst!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,713 ✭✭✭branners69

Best for my would be Dylan Moran and I also have a soft spot for Dave Allen and Spike Milligan - if we are allowed to have past comedians?

Worst is Andrew Maxwell and Tommy Tiernan, he is about as funny as a verruca on my left testie!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 615 ✭✭✭walt0r

Ardal is one of the worst stand-ups there is. Jason Byrne sucks too. I actually told him he wasn't funny one night. He was shocked. I couldn't believe he hasn't realised this before now...
Also, how can ANYBODY like Karl Spain? Seems like a nice guy but he's so unfunny.

I'm gonna get flamed for this...but I like Dave McSavage a lot. He is a spoilt, ignorant prick, and was actually ignorant to me one night I talked to him but I still think he's pretty funny (even though some of his material is regurgitated)

    Tiernan has gone downhill...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

I saw Neil Delamere last week and he was absolutely brilliant. Dont judge him by his panel performances, he's excellent live.

Went to see Tommy Tiernan last night and he is by far the best comic i've seen. Went to see Dara O'briain and few weeks back and Neil Delamere earlier in the year, but they dont compare to Tommy!
