Can anyone explain simply what the differeance is between the canon 400d and the canon 5d,30d ,rebel xti Etc?

i'm looking for a good DSLR budget of about 900 euro.

bf has the Nikon D80 which i am getting the hang of and like, but he suggested i look at a canon so we can have the best of both worlds.

also what is the cheapest web site for these? I am looking at ebay but the prices seem to vary.

First things first if he has a Nikon then get a nikon so ye can swap lenses! Having both will be a major drain on funds.

The 400d and the Rebel xti are the same camera just different names for different markets. The 30D, 5D and 1D are steps up the pro ladder. the 30D still has a cropped sensor (1.6 times) where as the 5D and 1D both have 35mm sensors (and more mega pixels). The 5D and 1D also have better feature sets like higher frames per second, spot metering, more custom functions and are generally more sophisticated.

The 400D is a great camera for someone who is into photography but has a budget. the 30D comes close, its better built (magnesium alloy opposed to plastic) has a few more features but image quality is arguably just as good on the 400D.

THB you should really look at a nikon and pool your resources with your other half. Lenses are the biggest cost photography wise.

Yippee Mrs. 6th got me a 400D for my birthday so houldn't be long til I have some decent snaps.

Of course 6th jnr is not even 2 weeks old so the time to shoot is hard to get.

400D seems like a great camera but I've alot to learn to really make good use of it.

Guys, im a bit of a rush to buy a digital camera, I've got 350 euros to spend on one, it needs to be fast starting and feature packed, but I need it by Thursday, anyone any recommendations or is there any specials going in on the shops in Dublin.

    Hi Guys,

I posted this separately, only afterwards finding this thread so here goes again...

So I have set myself a budget of €300-€350. That’s to include camera, carry case & decent sized memory card. I have checked revues and came up with 2 options so far. I have chosen these 2 brands because of using then in the past.

    Fujifilm Finepix S5700

7.1 MP, 10 x (optical zoom)2.5inch screen. Anti blur and loads other stuff

    Kodak Easyshare, Z710

7.1MP, 10x (optical zoom), 2inch screen. easy settings and auto modes.

Okay, I like Fuji and use it in work. love the software package and is nice and easy to edit pics and all. Never used this model though, or in fact anything other than bog standard fuji com to think of it.

As for the Kodak, its €100yoyo reduced in Argos at mo, bringing price from €304 to €204 so seems great deal. Love the ease of use from Kodak and the docking station is great and handy. the software package with my standard kodak (at home) not as good but then again its 6 years old (so thats another thing to think of, the previous one was very reliable and durable) so I presume the software is better now.

So, anyone out there have either of these cameras or heard good/bad about them. any help would be appreciated...Or other options would be nice too.

I'm piggybacking on WexfordMusings's post. Advice will be received gratefully.

A few years back I did a good deal of photography, and fancied that I knew how to use a camera. Then I got out of the habit, and forgot a lot of stuff. I got myself a digital P&S a couple of years ago and got some good and a lot of bad pictures. I have persuaded myself that a better camera would increase the percentage of good pictures.

    What I want:
    - Good optics
    - Optical zoom x5 or better (macro not very important)
    - Highest sensitivity available
    - Large and bright LCD display (my eyes aren't as good as they were)
    - Decent flash (ideally, I would like one off the camera, but I'm not budgeting for an SLR, so the further from the lens the better -- a bit of power would be good, too, better than 2m cover)
    - Anti-shake, because I don't have the steadiest of hands.

I know such a piece of equipment would be hard on batteries, but I can live with that.

On what I have read so far, the Fuji Finepix S5700 looks like the best match for my needs, and I can have one in my hands from Pixmania for a little over €200.

Does anybody think I am going in a wrong direction?

I've never tried the s5700 P Breathnach but I have read and heard from one owner that Fujis picture stabilisation on the camera isn't supposed to be great .If thats a big issue for you you might be better to look elsewhere.Just a thought.

While we are on the subject of Fuji cameras there's a new one out next week called the s8000.
    http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/s/finepix_s8000fd/specifications/index.html
-It's going to be around E400.
-It has dual image stabilisation which is supposed to be very good and a big improvement on anything Fuji have had before.
    -It has 18x optical zoom.
However the apperature range is F2.8- F8.0, 10 steps in 1/3 EV increment and the sensor is 1/2.35-inch CCD.

Does that consitutes a big compromise on more creative application of the camera and on picture quality?(I've read the sensor is unusually sized for Fuji so mightn't be as good). The camera isn't too bulky and it's light weight enough.I want a camera for normal everyday use but also one to learn to be a bit more creative with. Anyone think the s8000 might be a good bet?
I realise giving advice when the camera is not even out is difficult or impossible.I suppose I'm asking if there's anything glaring in the specifications list that might make this a no-no.I'd like to know because I have someone who could buy it for me in the US in the next few weeks at over E100 cheaper than it would be here and it's very hard to pass up! Any nod in the right direction would be greatfully recieved.

thinking of getting my first DLSR but dont have to high a budget ie €300 - €400 for that price would it make sense for me to get a good second hand one or would i be able to afford a new one?

that budget is very tight, you might get a body but a good lens will add considerable cost. Expect to pay €1000 for the whole shebang new.

You may have to go down the 2nd hand route. I know a lot of people here are upgrading to the Canon 40D so there may be a few 350Ds about with the 18-55 kit lens.

HashSlinging, WexfordMusings and P. Breathnach I'd reccommend this:

A friend bought one recently and I was very impressed by it for a compact.

Some reasonable deals here, not the latest models but still good cameras.

I am going to Kuala Lumpur myself in Dec on my way to Oz, was thinking the same thing, I did a small amount of research and it doesn't seem to be as cheap as Hong Kong or Singapore.

I have a friend who may be in a position to buy a Fujifilm FinePix S2 Pro (review at DP review) along with 2 nikon film lenses, a 140-240 and 70-120 (42-160 and 28-80 are the digital equivalent focal lengths apparently). He has been offered it for 500 and he is looking for advice on whether or not it is a good deal. While this is a high spec professional or semi professional level camera, it is over 5 years old. My friend is an enthusiastic photographer, but this would be his first DSLR. He is looking for something relatively cheap, but I'm wondering if I should recommend something along the lines of a second hand 350D, or is the Fujifilm actually very good value even at it's age.

    Hello,
I have a big interest in Photography and have been looking at this forum for a while now. I dont have a "propper" camera as such and I am looking to pick one up.
Thing is, should I go for the D-SLR or a Bridge camera. To be honest I cant see my self investing in the lenses (until i actually get good at photography) and I am looking for opinion on whether a Bridge would be a good base to start from.

I'd say it would be a good base to start. Picture quality will never be as good as a DSLR, but the same sort of controls will be there. But would probably be better going for entry level DSLR than high end bridge camera if the DSLR is only a bit more expensive

you should have a look at what cameras are popular on flicker and the type of photos possible from various cameras

    Great, thanks for posting!
To be honest its not the picture quality I'm worried about as of yet, more getting practice at taking photos, styles and skills etc
I see your point about buy a expensive Bridge rather than an entry level DLSR...and I'm conflustered again :)

If there are other people in my position, i'm also looking at this site:

I would advise you to get a budget dSLR (like the Nikon D40 :) ) The good thing about SLRs is that you can upgrade them when your abilities improve - bridge cameras are a lot more limited when it comes to accessories.

See my small photo collection taken with the D40: www.flickr.com/photos/thirdfox
