We should all copy and paste that email and send it off to them

Its sad really, 83 orders they've got from me..... I ordered there last weekend, and the order was accepted in sterling and posted. Its yet to arrive, it will be interesting to see if/when it arrives.

I think whats happening is that the days of the internet being cheap are coming to an end.

I wonder how big their Irish customer base is?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

They are part of the Buy4now.ie website (probably get a good few customers from there), maybe they should be made aware regarding this issue also.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,466 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Buy4now will probably say that play are helping their customers by charging in Euro.

Their sterling/euro conversion rate is crap.

I think a complaint to some consumer watch dog may be needed or to email someone like Pat Kenny.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,466 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

I don't think the consumer watchdogs can do anything as they are in Jersey and therefore not in the EU.

Dunno if Pat Kenny would be interested in the story tbh.

Just checked and I've actually ordered 248 items from them since 2001.

They won't allow you to checkout if you select sterling.

Just checked, still getting the "This item can only be delivered to a UK address." message.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,204 ✭✭✭kensutz

This item can only be delivered to a UK address.

Datel Play & Charge Kit For XBox 360 (Xbox 360)

Oh well one less customer they have until they sort it.

But are you trying to order a gadget/electrical item? There is a distinction here...

Just tried with a DVD and got "This item can only be delivered to a UK address."

I have about 20 item's on pre order with them,I have agreed to pay sterling prices so if they charge me the more expensive rate what is stopping me from doing a cc chargeback on every item?

    Paul.

Nothing. That's the big risk of the internet business model.

    Just done more research,,,

    I just checked PLAYUSA.COM

    Hard Candy

    32.99 $CA

    27.99 $US

    14.99 £

    23.99 €

    Now the exchange rate say's

    32.99 $CA =

    29.51 $US

    15.52 £

    23.06 €

It seems we are paying more for our DVD'S so the US and UK can get them cheaper?

    Paul.

That's a bit of a shock now. I ordered from them not a week ago, ordered in pounds sterling as you do and I had no problems. I must have been lucky and made one of the last orders before this came in.

It looks like my first order with them might be my last.

That's a real shame. Play have been a positive name drop on this site for years and were a great service each time I ordered off them.

At least the internet shopping climate has improved. CDWOW, BlahDVD, BangCD, and countless others at your disposal.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 18,115 ✭✭✭✭ShiverinEskimo

CDWOW I hope are sitting in Hong Kong laughing their heads off at this. I hope play.com aren't the first to go dabbling in ripping people off with many of their competitors to follow...

Can anybody recommend some other DVD sites apart from cdwow, blahdvd and sendit? I've order 275 DVDs from play in the last 3 years and I've emailed them to tell them I wont be ordering any more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭Drag00n79

I have used them a lot too. Ah well, looks like it will be just Blah DVD and Sendit for me from now on. Shame...

well my luck ran out just now when i was ordering a book "This item can only be delivered to a UK address."

anyone know of a good site for books ?

Just got this email from them in response to my complaint...
    Thank you for your email.

Following a recent update to our website we can advise that customers
outside of the UK now need to purchase in Euro's.

We continue to endeavour to keep play.com as competitive as ever and
we will be reviewing the Euro's pricing on the site.

Please except our sincere apologies for any confusion this change may
    have caused.

    Kind regards

    Email Support Team

    Play

Seems they may have realised people aren't as stupid as they first thought... or they're just bullsh*tting and have no intention of reducing the Euro prices.

Just got the same reply as Royale with Cheese.

Shower of ****ers. Last order I place with them after 2 or 3 years of loyal custom.

CDWOW - welcome to my visa card. You will be close friends and will get to know each other quickly and intimately.

I got no response to my complaint yet, not that anyone got much of a response seemingly.

Anyway, I used to always check prices on various sites before buying, but play.com used to mostly be the cheapest. They still may end up cheaper sometimes, just not as much cheaper. It's a bit of a con that they hide this extra charge in the exchange rate instead of saying outright what it's for. Seems to me like we are subsidising the UK market with a higher discount. Hard to know if it actually costs more to post to Ireland than to the UK mainland from the Channel Islands.

Thanks to indiewindy for the link to blahdvd.com too when I was looking for Seven. I bought it off sendit.com in the end, cheaper again at just £5.79.
