Play.com are now refusing to take orders in STG to be delivered
outside the UK, so now one must order it in euro and pay extra
(in effect a delivery charge) this is surprising from play.com seen
as their selling point is free delivery.

I know its not much but it´s the principle of being charged extra
especially after buying so many DVDs books and CDs off them over the
    last 4 years.

Since when? They have always me charged in STG. I might stick to amazon.co.uk in future so. Hundreds in lost sales from me alone.

I made a site that shows amazon.co.uk in Euro and it filters out products that won't be shipped to Ireland.

Those faux amazon sites make baby Jesus cry!

Just tried putting in an order and got this;

"This item can only be delivered to a UK address."

    bastards!
there's over a Euro difference in the 2 prices according to xe.com :(
First the Wii game pricing, and now this... they've gone from being an etailer that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to one that I'll most likely stop using completely.

Just cancelled my remaining orders with play.com

Reordered them cheaper on www.cdwow.ie and www.sendit.com

    That's pretty poor alright.

I've been using them for over 5 years.. but that's the end of that now.

Any idea if this is going to effect preorders? If they want to start charging in euro then they had better start saying 'all euro prices quoted are estimates' and then charge the actual exchange rate, of course that's like we're doing ourselves by buying in STG!

I've always found play.com to have the about the worst exchange rate too, no matter where you shop STG will be cheaper, but on play.com it's more pronounced! They'll lose business on this unless they drop their euro prices.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

I think that they have really shot themselves in the foot with this move.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭whatsupdoc?

Is this to make money themselves from the exchange rate?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Probably to cover increased postage costs I would think.

Just noticed this now when I was about to buy Seven, £6.99 -> €11.49, whereas it converts to €10.34 on xe.com.

Has anyone gotten a reply from play on this new policy? I'm sending them a mail now too. Damn cdwow don't have Seven either so I'll probably buy it from Play anyway as it's £9.99 on movietyme.com.

    OT question, what's Wii?

Hmm i bought a DVD from there last Sunday and it went through ok, i got an email saying it was shipped on Monday

it still has not come and i thought maybe it was due to An Post.....maybe not...it better arrive

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

    Don't worry, it'll arrive eventually.
Play are still shipping to Ireland, but are just charging a bit more to ship the item now.
anything that was ordered or preordered before they made this change will still arrive (if Án post see fit....)

Been using play.com for a very long time, thought they were the best site around. I knew their euro exchange rate was a rip off but it never bothered me as I just left the price in sterling. This is a joke, they'll never see a bit of business from me again. I'll be emailing them to tell them that too.

Yep - same here, no excuse for it, when the likes of cdwow, sendit, blah etc all allow you to pay via sterling etc

Wont be using Play again if that policy doesnt change.

I heard it was something to do with the court case against them, regarding not paying VAT because they ship from Jersey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭redman

    What about www.playusa.com?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,352 ✭✭✭Ardent

Wow, I went to order yet another DVD on play and discovered the delivery/euro scam. Thanks for sendit.com link, I'm using them from now on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭alastair_doom

this is terrible news.... i bought about 25 items from them last year, if i did the same this year it'd cost about 37.50euro extra. Especially bad news with xmas just round the corner, did all my shopping there last year, not this year tho

its outrageous saying irish people must pay more!

i must write a strongly worded letter later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,451 ✭✭✭blastman

I haven't ordered that much from Play recently, to be honest, as I've always found somewhere else carrying the same thing cheaper. I think it's a stupid move on their part, though, although I don't know if the Irish market is big enough for them to care. I know I'll be going elsewhere while this remains their policy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

I'd prefer if they were honest about it said what the extra charge was instead of burying it in the exchange rate..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

It's like they just skimmed over my email and sent a generic response...

    Hi,

I tried to pre-order an item from your site today and was presented with the message above when I tried to checkout.

I have been using your site for over 2 years and have ordered in Sterling each time (105 items) as my card provides a more favourable exchange rate than your system.

I am disgusted that you are trying to increase your markup by targeting those customers aho are not based in the UK. I used to recommend play.com to all of my friends and even placed orders on their behalf from time to time - I also recommended your site in various internet forums - not least Ireland's biggest forum www.boards.ie (see here for a discussion on this subject: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2054992441 ).

If this business move remains in place I will happily take my business to your ever-increasing number of competitors such as CDWOW, SendIt and BlahDVD to name a few where, increasingly, it is not only their service that is superior but also their prices - never more so than now with you customers being forced to pay the (higher) euro price.

This new rule on your website would not be so bad if your system used any kind of a fair exchange rate (CDWOW use Worldpay for example which uses up to date market exchange rates upon payment). You advertise free delivery but it is obvious the increased euro price is to recoup some of the cost in delivering the items to non-UK destinations.

Please respond with something more than a generic response as was copied and posted on the link I provided above.

Will be nice to see if I get what tman got.

Its sad really, 83 orders they've got from me..... I ordered there last weekend, and the order was accepted in sterling and posted. Its yet to arrive, it will be interesting to see if/when it arrives.

I think whats happening is that the days of the internet being cheap are coming to an end.

I wonder how big their Irish customer base is?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

They are part of the Buy4now.ie website (probably get a good few customers from there), maybe they should be made aware regarding this issue also.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Buy4now will probably say that play are helping their customers by charging in Euro.

Their sterling/euro conversion rate is crap.

I think a complaint to some consumer watch dog may be needed or to email someone like Pat Kenny.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

I don't think the consumer watchdogs can do anything as they are in Jersey and therefore not in the EU.

Dunno if Pat Kenny would be interested in the story tbh.

Nothing. That's the big risk of the internet business model.
