That is a savage fish. Any details: how, where (roughly)?

Caught in Pulaski in upstate New Yorkon the salmon river.
Caught it on a fly called Ham and eggs with lead in the leader!
Strange way of fishing up there-thought we were trying top knock them out rather than catch them!
Thousands of fish running but a serious smell off all the dead ones.

It's a lovely fish but I'd imagine the smell is rough alri.
What's the story on eating them. As in the ones about to die. If you see one struggling or in real shallow water about to die is it safe to eat them?

No dodderangler you couldn't them.they are known as zombie fish.they would be swimming past you with bits falling pdf them!
As they are freshwater salmon they are not as strong tasting as fish that come from the sea.

Slightly unusual pic of my catch. The sack at the front is yesterday's haul of mackerel from Clogherhead - about 40 or so. The swirl to the left of the kayak is one of the three seals that shadowed me - he dived as the camera clicked.

There's also one to the left of that one in front and looks like I can see the other one under water to the left of the shoe

Yeah the grey streaks just under the water beside the kayak is the one that dived beside me. I'd say the feicer was smelling the fish in the front of the boat because he nearly had his head over the side looking at the sack. Bloody shutter on the phone is way too slow - he was there when I pressed it but by the time it actually clicked he'd ducked.

I'd say its hard to get rid of them when they're around the kayak.
I usually rev the engine and they fcuk off for few mins until I start catching more macks.
Had a dogfish taken on me before.
    Didn't think they eat them

The seals at clogherhead will actually follow you feathers waiting on fish to bite.

They certainly do eat dogfish BTW.

2 wrasse this evening. The fishing was very slow. First one on limpets, the other took a lure intended for pollock.

Caught my best wrasse every yesterday evening, I'd estimate around the 4pound but crikey he was some weight.

    both caught on small crabs.

and another tiny fella, both beautifully marked.

Both returned alive and well :)
