    Restaurant or takeaway...

I got some food out of The Lotus, Dublin Road, earlier and it was smashing.

The Mayflower, Davis Street is now gone sadly.

    Where else would you rate?

Awww when did they close the mayflower? :(

Quite a while back; no idea why.
The Jazz is tolerable if you're around that area. There's one in Dooradoyle (Behind the Xtra-Vision) which is quite good.
Nowhere quite compares to The Mayflower though.

The Sun Flower in Nicholas St, portions are huge. God I miss it best chicken curry and fried rice ever.

You certainly can't beat The Jasmine on O'Connell Street, The Peony Court at Punches X and The Wokking on O'Connell Street. YUM!!!

That one beside the jail isn't bad. Can't remember what it's called now (Millenium I think) but it used to be the Hakasan.

The Dragonfly in Castletroy is excellent - always have had an excellent meal or takeway from there.

The sunflower has the best curry in limerick most def.

But for me the best chinese is the ze-we-ton they have
places in town next to the old quarter in raheen and out

Gotta be the Jasmine Palace (O'Connell Street), Ze-we-ton (Fr. Fussell Rd, Dooradoyle and The Old Quarter) or my regular the King Palace (beside the regional hospital)

The sister Pagoda restaurant in Castletroy is damn fine too.

The Ming on Glentworth street is quite good too.Either that or the Peony Court at Punches Cross for me

The Jasmine and Ze-We-Ton are owned by the same family apparently.

Normally I love the Lotus (it is my local) but last night I ordered a pork chow mein and got home and it was a portion of chow mien *grrr*

They are owned by two families who run the Jasmine as a partnership. One then has the Ze-We-Tons and one has the two wokking take aways

I had a 3 day bout of food poisoning which coincided with a trip to a certain take away in Limerick, the room rotated at one point as I projectile vomited for the 17th time.

I was usually left disappointed by Pagoda Castletroy so I've stopped eating there... The one on corbally road seems to be better. (A few people I know agree) Overall though their sauces seem to be a huge sugar-fest... Not my idea of good chinese.

Jasmine Palace for sunday buffet.... All you can eat...
    For me that's alot;)

I couldn't face a buffet of anything most Sundays.

    Barfsville Arizona :(

Anyone try the chinese in Thomond?
Iv gotten about a hand full of chinese takeaways from there..found them all very nice!

The Jasmine is lovely aswell..expensive tho.

Thanks for the compliments. I will pass that onto my dad. He is half-retired, and that is reason why the decor is "naff", as you call it. I don't work there (never have really), and in complete different sector (s/e). But watch out for a change in menu soon. :)
And yes, I recommend our restuarant's curry. It's an old family recipe, and almost all restaurants and takeaways have their version of our recipe, as they all worked in our kitchen at some point in time ('cause the HK is one of the 1st Chinese restaurants in Limerick. Huzzah! :D).
The Sunflower's my relative's place. Great value as well! Don't want to bias or anything. But try the curry! I'm a big fan myself.;)

agree with u on the curry sauce, could i suggest that they incluse meat sung on the new menu!:D

The Shamrock next to O'Mara Motors on the Ennis Road is top class and owned by a HK relative too if I'm not mistaken. Always get my take-away there or sometimes sit down too

I second that. It's bloody addictive. The restaurant is always packed in there so that's a good sign too.

Heh, yup, my uncle owns it. Good food.

Other places I would recommend (although I don't go to them, as it's awkward since you know the folks who run them)...
    - Peony Court
    - Jasmine Palace
Although both above are pricey compared to other restaurants in Limerick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 261 ✭✭cmurph

i know its the county , but i adore THE RIVER , in newcastle west , sit down or take out its fab. keenly priced too.

there is a chinese in croom too, but i would only go to order for the next day they are that slow.i phoned in an order last week at 8.30 pm and was told it would be ready for 9, was there at 9 and paid for the food , eventually i lost my patience at 9.25 and asked for my money back and left , there was only 2 in the restaurant and she only served 1 person while i was there!!

City Wok overhead Scott's bar are pretty cheap, I think a main course starts from €5.95.

Peony is doing a roaring trade with their All you Can Eat lunches these days. Best move ever for them to set up that buffet.
It used to be a ghost town at lunch, but now its always packed.

You must be joking. The Jasmine is overpriced and unexceptional. Not to mention the filthy dirty carpets. Considering that the Wokking is substandard to the Jasmine I wouldn't give it to my dog.

    China-Ki in Corbally is fantastic.

Before I gave up meat, I was a connoisseur of Special Fried Rice (it was the only thing i ever ordered in the chinese) and Hong Kong did the best one by a mile. A big fried egg, and gorgeous gravy on top of it. Very reasonable price too. Its even nicer when you sit down in the restaurant for it. Had a lovely vegetable noodle from Wokking in Caherdavin the other night.

Fusion is very nice, always get a good meal there.

I have eaten in most and usually settled on one for a certain length of time until I found something better and/or became more mature where I ate.

Started off all those years ago eating in the Lotus and now the Zweton would be my Chinese of choice.

The Jasmine is all good and well but pricey. The Wokking downstairs uses the same ingredients as upstairs except the Lobster(:p) as I have worked with the chefs and the ingredients in both kitchens. So better value downstairs but uncomfortable seats.

I used to like the Hong Kong because of the Egg Roll but the other food was pretty dry thinking back.

The King Palace is all good and well but I haven't been there in an age. Do they do special offers?

The Pheony court is ok but again not in a long time.

My current chinese in Newport is okay but everything is the same with a different sauce thrown over it and rice/chips is extra at full price.

The Shamrock on the Ennis Rd is not too bad either.

If I had to head out now for a Chinese I would head to the Zweton for a Hickory Chicken. ;)

Dragon Phoenix in Dooradoyle (above Xtra Vision) is really cheap and really nice. I think ots only 6.80 for most meals incl fried rice. Also, delivery is free!! Love it!!

I was in the Peony Court recently for the lunch buffet and wasn't that impressed with it to be honest. The starters and main course choices was pretty limited imo and found them pretty slow at topping up the trays.

In their defense though the place was pretty busy so alot of people are obviously happy with it but overall not my cup of tea.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 196 ✭✭irishleedsfan

I have to say the shamrock on the ennis road. Then send the OH into the golden gate in thomondgate for curry on the way home. Nobody in Limerick comes near their curry. their food on the other hand:(

The Wokking in Caherdavin always pleases me.
Very fast service, nice staff, very tasty food.

Have a fondness for Jumbo out next to the Groody Bar myself. Reasonably priced and portions are very generous.

I heard that Jumbo was good except it gets bad press in its other locations. Wexford for example was ordered to close by the health board until they literally cleaned their act up.

    Big chain of restaurants.

Thats like McDonalds in comparison to a chipper though. Poor choice and not authentic.
Not a fan of Zeweton at all.

Not authentic? Im sure, Mr P Tsang, the owner of the Jasmine palace would be surprised to hear you say that.

All the companies supplying the Jasmine supply the Zweton's. I know because I used to work for two of them.

If you eat in Ze-we-ton in Annacotty, then eat in the Dragonfly the next night, you will see what I mean.

Never ate in Dragonfly but prefer Zweton on the Father Russel road myself. Might treat myself to the Dragonfly when I get a job.

Jumbo in Castletroy is the best for takewaway imo. Their fried rice is the nicest in Limerick.

Half of Limerick can't be wrong! ;)

I wouldn't take the opinion of the majority of people in this city country as a barometer of what is right and wrong or good and bad.

Most don't know their arse from their elbow.
