Managed to squeeze an extra day in so now travelling on the 19th.

Quick question for those heading over, are you chaps bringing travellers cheques and are they easily changed over there? or is everyone taking a heap of cash? I remember someone saying something about there being a limit on the ammount of cash you can take with you, could be a figment of my imagination though.

If you're carrying more than $10k cash you will probably be brought aside and asked some questions. You're allowed bring more than that much but you won't get through airports/security with out being stopped and asked for an explanation.
Maybe ring the hotel you're staying at and ask them what the deal is with wiring money direct and how much it costs.

Its $10k is the max cash your meant to bring. I was onto the hotel Im staying about wiring money over (the mgm) which you can do but u can only use on their tables and cant cash it out :( they will wire back the balance when you leave.

The 10k is quoted on the customs form before you land and your meant to declare anything over , if you were honest enough to declare over the 10k dont know what happens the extra.

Most bank cards will work over there and you can use your visa for buy-ins or getting cash out.

Getting back to the Tax issue, have you guys done anything about getting an ITIN number?
I've looked around the net for more information and i've heard conflicting
views on this. Some people say you gotta get one before you go, some say you can look after it afterwards if you cash.
Anybody got any info on this?
I've used the search function but can't find anything, although i'm sure theres been threads on this before.

On the cash thing. No danger of me bringing anything near 10k like you pros but Travellers Cheques are fine. I used them before in Atlantic City with no problems. This time I have cleared my CC and will bring minimal cash to be going on with. The CC should do the rest and I can log into bank of ireland to transfer cash from my account to my CC if needs be. That'll be me at the Swimming Pool at the Trop on my wifi laptop moving cash around :)

    according to len
I got mine by going up to the cashier’s cage at the Mandalay Bay. The supervisor sorted out all the forms for me then and there, all I needed was my passport and the next day I had my ITIN number.

you can bring as much money travellers checks or any form of currency with you but if you have more than $10000 total u must declare it on the customs form.If u dont they can confiscate.sometimes they dont notice on the form and you walk thru but if they do it just means you have to fill out a form 10 minutes max no problem. One important thing if they ask you at immigrations what you do for a living dont under any circumstances say you are a pro card payer.they can then say you are not going on holidays and u would then need a work visa.they actually stopped an english golfer going toplay in the us open cuz he had no work visa.if u are a pro invent another job.good luck lads,i wont be going to the great wsop rip off this year or any other for that matter .dont forget that town is built from the ground up specifcally designed to get your money, your in enemy territory the minute u step off the plane.if anyone comes up to you and says hello tell them to **** off.

Yeah the ITIN thing is no problem, just go into one of the decent casinos like the Bellagio before you play any multis and get the poker room to sort it out for you. It takes about 5 minutes. Under no circumstances enter a tourney in the Rio before sorting this out though, they're a pack of **** when it comes to customer service.

very important to sort that out,a friend of mine was lucky enough to cash in last year and by some miracle they gave him the money even tho he hadnt got his itin sorted.after failing to sort it even after emails and a phone call from harrahs he went to the wsop this year and was sitting in the 10k plo when a suit walked up to him and said if he didnt give them 16k immediately they would take his chips and DQ him from thetournament.this obviously wrecked his head and spoiled any chance he had in the tournament.these guys dont care and the yanks take all that tax stuff VERY seriously

Dont tell them you are a journalist either. My mate was turned back at the border. They want the US journos to cover the events and syndicate the reports out to the rest of the world, securing jobs for the US journos.
Also they view outside journos and part pink commies and part taliban.

Thanks for the info on the ITIN guys.
One other thing..... On any forms i have to fill out or any questions i get asked by customs, do you say your just going on holiday and don't mention the WSOP?

Yeah I'd just stick with that. Loads of people say they are going for the WSOP and it's fine, but I don't see the point really, it'll just mean they'll ask you a LOAD more annoying questions. Tonnes of people head to vegas for holidays every year, so there's no need to mention poker.

  • Business & Finance Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 32,387 Mod ✭✭✭✭DeVore

Yeah, just say you are going to Vegas for a holiday. God knows the US officials are nosy enough that you dont need to be offering them information.

Yea, not sure how I managed, bit of shouting, asking to talk to managers etc and then all of a sudden it was oh you have your wsop ticket stub, thatll be $530. Niall managed to get ripped off for the next 3 weeks though so itll even out. Seems to be costing around $2700 for 21 nights.
