brown rice, tuna, chickpeas, kidney beans, carrots, peas, mixed herbs and three scrambled egg whites all cooked and stir fried- i can't wait for my lunch :D

Alternatives are chicken salad (with heaps of lettuce/ cabbage, tomatoes, cucumber, bit of corn, more chickpeas, kidney beans, flax oil, sunflower seeds).

Stir-fry veg (cooked from frozen so no need for oil) with chicken left over from dinner the night before.

Or if I'm feeling naughty sesame seed bagel with extra lite cream cheese and baked beans.

Ah dammit now I'm hungry... where's my whey?

Each day i bring to work with me

two portions of chicken with just chilli sauce
two portions of chicken with brown rice and chilli sauce
    2 whey shakes
2 portions of amino acid tablets.

I normally stick with the wholefoods, but i like to be covered should i get a 5 minutes lunch or am stuck in a meeting at food time!

I don't actually have a lunch box, at least not since the days when my yellow Masters of the Universe lunchbox was kicked and walloped around the primary school yard prior to disintegration.

However, I do usually have lunch and for the past while this has consisted of either a tuna / ham & cheese / BLT baguette, with a banana and tea.

quite boring really for me- i'm in till college until 8 most nights sometimes 10 so usually bring 4 of my 6 meals with me

These are: 3 portions of brown rice (at the moment thats 100g uncooked weight per portion, normally 125g)
    2chicken breasts (150g cooked weight)
tin of tuna (35 - 40g protein roughly per tin)

    3wholegrain bread slices
    tin of tuna

couple of pieces of fruit (though i forget that sometimes)

It varies pretty much every day, but its usually either the remains of the previous night's dinner (I always cook double so I'll have lunch for the next day) with some brown or basmati rice, two tins of tuna with light mayo, cottage cheese and multigrain rivita.

As for the dinner, it varies between chicken/turkey with sweet chilli sauce (buy it in the Asian markets, it's so much cheaper than buying it in a supermarket), kidney beans, broc/carrots or steak and veg. Both are great for lunch the next day too, I just chop the steak up finely and add some kidney beans and sunflower seeds and then add some baby spinach and a balsamic dressing..yum. I'm so hungry now I think it's time to go home and cook!

I aim to please! Isnt rice dangerous if not eaten straight away? If I cook it tonight, put it in the fridge and eat it in obair tomorrow will it be safe (unheated)??

Strangely enough, day-old rice is supposedly better for stir frying than "freshly" made. It won't kill you if you eat it cold, but it sounds rather unappetising on it's own.

Can burn a hole in your wallet if you get them everyday.

Bread quality is normally junk and its fat peoples food - though i will be slammed for that comment i guess.

From my experience people who are looking to drop a few pounds or more do not do very well on wheat containing products and rolls (white especially) are digested at the same speed as lucosade i.e. it is not a good choice if fitness and health are your goals.

Personal choice - homemade flapjacks (oats, seeds, nuts, dried fruit etc) and a protein drink (when i am looking to gain weight) or a homemade juice (carrot, apple base).

Natural peanut butter with oat cakes or just anything with oat cakes is another snack attack food for me.

Quote's like this worry me. I'm currently in heavy training several nights a week (mostly fitness work for soccer with a little ball work) and I'm trying to lose weight. I'm taking several small meals throughout the day avoiding processed starchy food at all costs ie. cereal's, white bread, white rice.

I'm taking a protein shake first thing in the morning and another shake immediately after training. I assumed it was going to aid my recovery times and retain muscle while at the same time losing fat. Is this the case?

I'd say I'm consuming around 1800-2000 cals a day. Anything less and it reduces my performance in training.

    Advice much appreciated :v:

One thing that I have noticed drastically improves my recovery time is adding 3 heaped tea spoons of glucose (same as dextrose but much much cheaper) to my after work out shake. After training I have a protein shake with glucose, then half an hour/45 mins later I have another shake with wheatgerm mixed in. Wheatgerm is a good source of carbs and energy and good for the skin but wouldnt be good for weight loss. I recomend the glucose though!

    * you can get bags of it in Tesco. Around €1

You should be fine, your not taking in enough calories to grow huge so i would not worry about that. As the previous post said, take in some fastdigesting carbs as well and you body will soon be flush with glycogen and amino acids on it's way to recovery.

If you find yourself losing lean mass from all the cardio training simply add more calories from clean sources.

Regarding rice, yes it can be dangerous if left out of the fridge overnight. If you're not going to eat it straight away you need to get it into the fridge pronto, don't go letting it cool for hours, just stick it in the fridge once it's no longer really hot. You can also run it under the cold tap in a strainer so you can put it straight into the fridge. Fried rice is really just a byproduct of boiled rice from the night before, they cook it again to kill the bacteria that grows on it. You're probably not going to die from eating it, but you could be very ill for a couple of days.

Protein is odd, I have heard it touted for both weight loss & gain. I do find it is an appetite suppresant for myself.

It can help people looking to add weight as it aids in muscle recovery and you need amin acid's for grow the muscle, so taking in protein every 3 hours or so and working out is a good way to grow ( along with carbs and healthy fats but i don't want to get into that now )

It is a good help to people looking to lose weight as whey shakes are low in calories, fat and carbs and protein has a good thermogenic effect in that the body must use calories to break protein down to amino acids. Also, regular eating of small meals keep your metabolism going.

    Simple.

For those who take a protein shake during the day, how do they do it?
I heard that shakes had to be drank within 20mins of being made or they begin to denature making them useless?
Or do you bring the tub and blender to work and mix it up!?

If you get a shaker (from a supplement shop €3), add your whey powder and simply add water when you want to drink it. I don't need a blender at all. If I add the whey to a half pint glass of water I can fully disolve it by stirring with a folk for about 60 seconds.

Just thought i would throw in there that if you need a blender to mix your whey then your taking the wrong brand. No product should not be able to mix easily in a Shaker or a Mixboy at this stage in the game. Remember that part of the reason for shakes in the first place is convenience, so make sure they are.

Slighty off topic I know but could you visably notice a reduction in body fat after 25 days?

I've cut out alcohol, junk food, white bread, white rice, processed cereals etc. I know take protein shakes in the morning and straight after training.

I've also been cardio training 4 nights with light weights sessions every other night.

Looking in the mirror I feel I'm starting to tighten up and muscles look more defined.

    Am I imagining this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

The mirror is always a good judge on weight loss, I only really use that and how clothes fit, If you're doing weight training you may expect to build muscle which weights more than body fat, so weight loss may not be reflected on the scales but you may be more toned in the mirror.

I think thats whats happening in my case. An increase in weight on th scales, but like like ErinGoBrath, I've cut out all that ****e.

I must say I like them myself but no matter how many you eat, you can feel like you've eaten enough - yet not still be quite satisfied! Hence I find them dangerous as I usually end up eating rice cakes, then something else almost immediately after that to properly satisfy me!

Although for my lunch everyday, it consists of a simple Banana and a Special K bar. If you haven't already tried them, don't....too bleedin addictive

It's not that odd - if you look at the total diet that people use for mass gain v's fat loss you'll find the big differences are more in the fat & carb macronutrient intakes.
