Stargate sg 1 has lessened in its quailty story lines of late!
they seem to be stay at home more often than out among the stars!
they never show the the gate travel sequence anymore
and seem to jump here and there pesuming that the little bits in between are unimportant to the story line!
    i dunno, just a rant!

Its the best Sci-Fi show on TV in recent years. Nuff said.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 353 ✭✭Boberto

    I still think it's going great ;)

Though i thought the recent enough race episode was a ripoff of 'Drive' from Voyager... (Can't recall the name of the sg1 ep)

While we're on the topic of SG-1, it looks like the spin-off series Stargate Atlantis got green-lighted last week - 20 hours were ordered by the Sci-Fi channel, to be shown in 2004.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭bizmark

stargate is being somewhat cheap with its old effects this seasion more than likely because their's going to be a F*CKING HUGE space battle for the seasion 7 final god only know's how much thats going to cost......and anyway how many times do you want to see the stargate engage ? its the same old pool of water over and over lol

    thats what i hear anyway's

and ya stagate is the best sci fi around with its spin off comeing in 2004 along with seasion 8 of sg-1 and their still considering a new Sg-1 film it really is becomeing the new Star trek

+ that space race ep wasnt that good if it wasnt for the funny new cast it would of been pritty boreing

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,441 ✭✭✭The_Goose

the gate engage sequence is great + the traveling through it part!

I love the show i m not sayin should burn in hell or anything just the little things they dont include anymore made a difference!

Whats this new spin off aboot???

    I liked the 'Tech-Con' commentators though... :D

'Well, it sounds like maybe they could use a couple of bottles of Radon Shield 55 - new from Tech Con Cosmetics. Radon Shield 55 protects you and your whole family, from the intense radiation of the sun. Day in, day out, Radon Shield 55 keeps your fun factor up and your lesion count down. ' - nope i don't have that good a memory, got it from gateworld ;)

SG1 is dropping off in quality a fair bit imo. The storylines and characters are all a bit tired now; Jonas freshened things up a bit but now he's gone and its back to the tired old formula. Nothing has really changed over 7 seasons... SG1 gets a lot of praise for its story-arcs and whatnot but really they don't push out the boat very much. They have a few new technologies, know a bit more galactic history and the baddies names have changed, but there hasn't been much progression. All the main characters are still alive and together in the same roles they were 7 years ago, the humans, tokra, goauld and asgard are all in the same situation in relation to eachother, etc etc. Its a bit stale.

Its still a great show but it's not what it used to be. They need to change things to keep it interesting.

Afaik both season 6 and season 7 were supposed to be the final season originally. So will it end with 8 now, and pass on the torch to Atlantis before it gets REALLY stale?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,835 ✭✭✭BoB_BoT

Nah, Stargate is one of those shows that can go on and on due to the simple fact that they saw the future :) So they either have to completely finish it (the perfect happy ending, unless some of the cast are killed off :p) or keep it going with the new generation i.e. Stargate Atlantis or the really bad ending where they just kill the show, which would have many a fan in uproar lol. The story line seems to be going that the humans more or less have to build their own technology due to the other races being busy with wars and such (Asguard with the Replicators & trying to stay alive due to their race dying out etc...) Personally I think the plots are far from stale, although they are trying to introduce some new characters as comedy or possable helpfuls in the future. Not showing so much of the gate engaging is kinda good because I've heard about the final battle for the season aswell (where the feck is that link... :)) So I'm looking forward to it.

Anywho I think it's still fresh :) but that's only my opinion.

    Rob

I've heard other people make similar comments about star gate copying Star Trek, but you have to remember ST deals with 'real life' issues such as racism, prodigious, religion vs technology and so on, SG tries to do the same, but doesn't do it as well, it lacks the style and grace of ST :p

...or the franchised inter-series repetition of pompous moral and ethical cliches in place of actual thought and effort in a storyline ;).

    staff envy? :D

yeah, but stargate makes up for it with the zats. can't beat that. even got the one shot for stun two for kill thingy (almost the same as phaser settings, but giving you a bit of time to decide whether you want to vaporise the guy or not).

they're all the same formula anyway. sarcastic leader guy, geeky scientist guy, token female character, emotionless guy for alternative angles on stuff.

except enterprise combined the token female with the emotionless guy. :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭mr_angry

I think they had some really good Goa'uld storylines going, but they let them drop for a couple of "filler" episodes, just so the actual storylines still seem incredibly exciting. They have plenty of material to go on - Lord Yu (or Yu Quang Xian Ti, to give him his full name) is ****ed, 'cos he's so old, and now he's going crazy, Anubis with an incredibly advanced weaponary, but a small fleet, and Baal in charge of the combined forces of the System Lords. And, of course, the "Lost City of the Ancients" we keep hearing about.

My favourite moment of the series was Carter slagging off "Signs" - "Why would Aliens with incredibly advanced technology travel all the way across the galaxy, and then be defeated by water? Especially when 2/3 of the planet is covered with it!"

How often have we all asked ourselves this.

Zats or phasers? Phaser rifles? who cares??? ZAP ZAP ZAP
It could be a lot worse. I can imagine the cast of fair city running around with P90s shooting the Goa'uld. Talk about acting, they're the business

    Spoliers for Season 7 - Evolution parts 1 & 2 (episode 11 & 12)
This recent two parter with the Supersoldier guy was the best Stargate this season I think. Had a nice simultaneous story with those stereotypical kidnapper guys with Daniel and Jackob and Carter infiltration Anubis' supersoldier facility. The second part where O'Neill and one of his special op's "friends" has to rescue Daniel was really good. The banter between them was actually funny.

In recent episodes O'Neill sarcastic jokes haven't been all that funny I didn't think. He had a nice balance in the first 4 seasons with the odd joke, and usually very funny, and he still acted like a colonel. But he's lost a lot of that seriousness now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,997 ✭✭✭The_Bullman

It has dipped in quality lately, but it is still the best sci-fi show on the television, especially with the farce that is Enterprise.

I'll see how series 3 of enterprise goes, but I still get the feeling that star gate will come out on top.

Oh yeah, I loved that line about Signs. One thing that SG1 does well is the humour. I've seen enterprise try it on a few occasions and I remember thinking that it if it had been SG it would have worked.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

I Would say that at the moment i am more looking forward to new Sg1 than new enterprise but i watch them both regilously

Sg1 is very very good if u like it go to Liz`s Sg1 website it is very good

Maybe I'm being a little naive and hopeful but is there any place where stargate can be downloaded.....
I don't often get the chance to watch it at home:( .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,835 ✭✭✭BoB_BoT

yar there is, but it's a bit illegal and can't be mentioned here cuz it's reguarded as warez! hehe there used to be this great site called gammaquad.com/stargate now know as stargatearchive.com they used to have all the episodes in asf form only about 20mbs per episode! really low quality but was great if you missed an episode and followed it religiously but that no long does it due to it being illegal :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 326 ✭✭Cable

I used to love watching SG1, thought it was one of the best shows on,

granted i only have bog1, bog2, tv3 and tg-crap but really liked it, and as we all know we can all rely on rte getting rid of what we like and replacing it with something thats bound to reduce their ratings.
Anyway, I recently managed to watch the newer episodes (about 2 or 3 of them) and i hate to it but i was serioulsy disappointed, it actuall started to look like it was talking on a Star Trek feel to it.... not that Star Trek is bad but it just isnt SG1.

Anyone else agree? or am i just going crazy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

Well ive been watching it since the first episode was eired on sky1 all those years ago (and then the power went out in a few estates in dublin and loads of people missed it What a hoorible night)

I personley still enjoy SG1 mabe its because ive been constantley been watching it so i wouldent notice gradual change over time, while you missed allot of episodes and then acme back to it and then noticed a big change

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

Yeah, User is right. It's hard to notice a decline really if you've been sticking with it consistently over years because the decline - if there - is a gradual thing. One of the problems nowadays is they've seven years nearly of backstory. Unlike Trek though they preserve their backstory. This leads to situations like last night where characters say various things which will confuse you if you've missed a few years (e.g. Teal'c needing sleep, knowing sedative darts penetrate the Goa'uld body shield, who Mark is, etc.).

I still think it's highly enjoyable though because - if nothing else - the characters bond really well together on screen in a way few other shows, in any genre, have successfully replicated.

I think micheal shanks (danial jackson) actually married his wife from staqrgate

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 15,001 ✭✭✭✭Pepe LeFrits

It'll always be worth watching every week because they have a clever, talented bunch of people at the helm. The show still produces some truly great episodes every now and then, which are more and often coming in the form of isolated one-off shows (or mostly isolated, virtually every episode has some references to previous eps). The main problem is that the big plot arc episodes like Evolution this season have been done to death, and are sooooooo tired.

Chimera last night, was a good example of the good SG1. Ok, so it was a plot arc episode, but it was still pretty self contained and worked very well.

I never doubted the characters or actors...i mean the movie would have been a million times better if it had Richard dean Anderson in it.

Its just when i saw them on their spacship, and one of my buds explained that its their new way of gettin around I was a little let down, i mean appart from the ship the story was still great (was the one with the little girl talking to Sam while they're in some nebula cloud??)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

Yes that ship was called the promethus (Jack wanted to call it the enterprise :) )
Its not working propley yet the asgard weapons wont run probley and as u saw in that episode the engines arnt the best either.

I personley love there little fighters the X-303`s

I thought thuesdays nights episode was good but i thought she played a brillent gou`auld. She should have escaped to be a gouald another day.

I think your frends abit off their.....The prommy never worked right and was only seen 3-4 times since it was built its notting more than a last line of defence incase of a attack on earth

and they only have 1 :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

There planing to build more with evuentley the help of the Russians (they gave them the plans) and the chinsie (who found out about the SGC along with the English)
We dont know if the chinise or the english will bother with helpiging build more ships

They also have at least 2 , probbley more of the X-303 the smaller fighter that can dock with the promethus

Hi, I'm new here, but I noticed that there seems to be a good core of Stargate fans here. Who has seen Chimera? I think that brings Season 7 back on track and is definitely a good episode...

The simple fact is, Stargate is far better than any current offerings from anywhere else - including Enterprise. The stories, characters and arcs are all superior and I thoroughly enjoy them. I can't wait for Atlantis! :D

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,004 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

I enjoyed Chimera too and thought it was a nice return to form. Cleaned up a few dangling plotlines (principally Osiris) and we just about heard the word "Atlantis" mentioned - spin off set up any episode now :)

the alliance is nearly dead :( that might be bad for earth in the end

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

I thought excelent episode. Very unexpected ending.
    Interesting story develpment.

I dont understand why the tokra would care that the tarai are builind ships.

EDIT: The Tokra quenn Hargeia is probbley still alive.

One of the tokra`s most important beliefs is that they are not to use a Cercoughagus - it makes them "eviel" When Martuf died they took out the symbiote and keept it in stasis for several months. We have to assume they did the same with there queen. There seems to be a "movement" in the conciel, the guys that didint let jackub know about the opertive. I would say that they are keeping the queen alive in stasis until they find a new host.

Also- do you remember the gouald from the epsidoe on Jonus planet?
She was a gouauld but she was not eviel, in the end she gave her own life for the host. Its clear that she was the way a gouauld/tokra is suposed to be. She didnt use a cercoughagus so she wasent eviel.

The worst part is next week is a 2 parter and the week after those is a 3 parter :(
