    Just looking at the odds and unsurprisingly NZ are completely un-backable favourites. Couldn't disagree with that in fairness

    Bookies unsure as to who's best of the rest with England, Wales, Ireland and SA pretty similar in the betting. No-one else is given a prayer

    If England were to come second in a tricky pool, one half of the draw could see those 4 in it, with NZ on the other half. Very little separating all of England, Wales, SA and Ireland so that would be fascinating. If Argentina come second it would still be very interesting and that would leave a probable NZ and England semi.

    Anyway a long way to go till that.

    Just looking at the Pools, a lot will depend on the timing of matches.

    Some games which could be interesting though imo:

    Japan v Ireland - Japan likely coming in on the back of a handy, confidence boosting win v Russia and Ireland after a 6 day turn-around after Scotland.

    France v Argentina - first game up for France surely that'd be their best chance of putting in a performance? Recently in the 6n they seem to perform well in the first match. Wouldn't amaze me if they snuck this

    Australia v Fiji - First game up for Fiji, squad depth shouldn't be an issue for them and they'll be raring to go

    Given the timing of matches I find it difficult enough to see any other potential upsets. There's usually one or two though

    I'm reaching a point where I'm not sure if I prefer SA or NZ in the qtrs. We may look back on the fond memories of facing Argentina in knock out games, lol

    I've to meet a specialist in a couple of weeks to see about getting a hernia operation done.
    Going private so I reckon if I got it done a few days before the opening game then the 6 weeks recovery time (no work during this period) could work out just fine.

    Cipriani has been left out of England's latest WC training squad. It's a 12 day training period in Treviso and he's still amongst the wider panel and will be training with Gloucester for that period. But you'd have to imagine that he's not going to Japan now

    What’s peoples thoughts on Marler ‘coming out of retirement’? Seems to me he wasn’t arsed with the effort and time required for the 6 nations/Autumn Internationals despite missing out on the pay when he knew he could just walk into the WC squad.

    Seems like a very odd character from the podcasts I’ve heard him on. Seems like its impossible to get a straight answer out of him.

    He made it pretty clear that he was doing it because of family reasons, he has two young kids under the age of 5. English training camps are fairly intense and they're not like the Irish ones which are only a couple hours drive away at most for a lot of the players.

    He wasn't a lock for the RWC squad at all, if it wasn't for Mako's surgery he probably wouldn't have been called up.

    that wouldnt be my reading of him at all.... he seems like a good family man who wasnt willing to miss his kids growing up by being away so much with England. he also didnt exactly see eye to eye to eddie jones either.

    and it was Eddie who made the "come back Joe we need" you call...

    i think hes great, very intelligent and funny, and he'll have a chance at a TV career after if he wants.

    September 21 (Day 2) of the World Cup looks an unreal day although I'll likely sleep through the first game.

    5.45am Australia v Fiji
    8.45am France v Argentina
    10.45am New Zealand v South Africa

    October 12 is a decent day too with
    5.45am New Zealand v Italy
    9.15am England v France
    11.45am Ireland v Samoa

    It's more any club trying to twist a players arm by telling him his livelihood is at risk if he goes to the world cup needs a kick in the arse.

    A lot of the Pacific nations players are from poor backgrounds and are being told by clubs that if they go to the world cup and play for their country they'll be at risk when it comes to contract renewal time. They don't get paid by their home nation for playing also, and likely have a large family or in some cases an entire village to support financially back home.

    The choice given to these players is basically retire from international rugby, or we as a club will pay you peanuts

    Brodie Retallick looked in a bad way after today's game. Reported dislocated shoulder and he's off to hospital.

    Could be a huge loss for New Zealand if its as feared and he could face a good few months out depending on severity.

    Wales will still be strong and lucky they have a below par Australia in there group and one of Eng/France or Argentina in the QFs

    If NZ & SA draw that opening match, it will make for a very interesting pool. Could potentially mean that every game played in the group matters.

    Faletau is a great loss as a player, but in terms of Wales they have barely had him for the last 18 months. So I’m not sure how big a loss he will be. Obviously having your best players fit is important. Though they have prepared without him in effect.

    Wales have been very lucky on the injury front so far this year.

    Apart from the Italy game when Gatland rotated on purpose, they basically had the same starting 15 in every game. The law of averages would suggest that that cannot last.

    Shame on such French clubs and ther Union, they have already ruined the quality of its own national team with ther greed driven schedule , and pilfered some of the best from the Islanders and then tell some not to play for ther country , is any wonder the game fails to grow in developing nations ?

    This is nothing new. It's happened before the last 2 or 3 world cups too. Although whatever about the clubs, I'm not sure you can blame the FFR here. World Rugby need to bring in a rule like FIFA have stopping players who refuse to play for their country playing for their clubs.

    obviously the greed is driven by the clubs , but it is happening under the Unions watch , they should be ther to enforce fairness

    Again it's World Rugbys job to ensure that this doesn't happen, not the FFRs. A simple law change saying that you can't play for your club during the world cup if you turn down a call up or your club refuses to release you resolves the issue. It works in football, it can work in rugby and it would put manners on the LNR and PRL.
