Was waiting for this, Martial nails this, especially the problem with the ground grappling. Any of us that have played together, we all do the same thing when it goes to the ground......we wait. Wait for someone to move so you can deny and then get grappling advantage so your next transition is almost a certain. It's so rare you see that irl. Sure you get some stalls while both are planning their next move and that bjj is like chess waiting to counter your opponent but mostly in mma, they're always moving on the ground, scrambling to advance position, block, reverse. If you do that in ea ufc, your stamina shoots down and you get mounted or you're shot when you stand up.

Ground grappling in this isn't fun and their attempt to fix it with simplified grappling doesn't change the core. Also the not being able to transition when someone postures seems almost cartoony where they just want 'casuals' to hammer strikes to try finish the fight. None of that is gonna get fixed for the main game imo. BJJ is my favourite A of MMA and i understand it must be incredibly difficult to code a good ground game but it's just not fun in this game.

Watched it myself. Pretty much has the same issue as me.

Meh.. a lot of marketing hype and filler, very little we didn't already know after the beta. Would have liked more info on career mode but I fear they are just talking it up but it will turn out more or less the same as last year..

Yeah nothing new there at all. I‘ve been playing UFC 3 a fair bit since the beta closed and it’s reminded me that it’s a really solid MMA game, from what I’ve played of 4, it feels like it’s gone backwards but hopefully the final product will deliver. Just not hyped for it at all though, unlike the last 3 UFC games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,904 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

It actually looked like a trailer for investors. Most of the big points the talked about were broken in the beta. Now they might have been fixed but I'd say any fans of the series would see that trailer as BS.

Hopefully its a decent trailer, career mode is gonna probably play a big part in whether or not I get this at launch.

I don't have high hopes. Brian Hayes mentioned a few times a big thing this year is player choice like you can now refuse fights like " if you get offered khabib, but don't want to fight him, you can turn it down. Careful though, turn down too many fights and you can be cut". It's a ****ing game, why would you turn down fights when the main goal is to reach GOAT status. Also, you could choose your fight on career in ufc 3 as well.

Also, i don't know if i like the fact you can only improve moves through using it in sparring and fights. It will lead to fights where you are constantly throwing the same move to improve it.

One thing i do like the sound of so far is you can have a full career in WFA winning the title and defending it before going to ufc.

Hopefully it has something more interesting than previous career mode as without ultimate team, i don't know how much longevity I'll get out of this if career is ****.

Well that sounds really good but won't know the depth until we can actually try it which, holy ****, is next friday on ea access trial. I like the sound of how you can build your fighter, the coach davis figure although Davis MMA name is a bit lame, and the ko'ing sparring partners if you want to go the heel route. Looking forward to lashing into this.

Also, a few things look copy and pasted from last year like injuries and weigh ins.

I really don't know whether I'll start as backyard brawler, WFA or DW contender series. Glad ultimate fighter isn't v there, that was never implemented well.

Yeah, i couldn't pass it up for that price. Now, to see if the trailer tempted Axwell :)

To be fair to them it sounds decent - I just hope that it is unscripted like they say and you can have the journey you want on it. I assume while still unscripted you are forced at certain times to take certain options rather than being completely free to do what you want and then at that stage you are given choices to choose from.

I like the idea of replaying it going through the different organisations and routes to the UFC and the title but that appeal only works if your career does feel truly different each time you play it. Saying the same stuff to a different fighter just because you picked a different weight isn't enough, it needs to feel like you made the decisions and that makes a proper impact on your path.

Is the end game status the same as before do we know, get hired, win the belt and get GOAT status?

I have loads of idea's of how I would like it to be and how it would be great if it played that way but chances are that's not going to be what it's like so its more a case of what percentage of that it meets.

Its enough though right now to keep me interested anyway. Realistically there's not enough time between release and the beta feedback to make a lot of changes and fixes so I am hoping that the beta we got was a very early one and with the bigger issues that they already made a lot of improvements themselves just based off their own testing during development and that these were already implemented in the full game before they even dropped the beta and the feedback only compounded that those changes needed to be made when put in front of the players.

Probably will buy it but will be looking out to see what the cheapest option is. On a completely seperate note its really annoying that PSN doesnt allow you to change your profile region and store on your profile on a permanent basis - I understand why with content availability etc. But I have moved to the US and it means I have my Irish profile with all my PS plus games and digital purchases from before, but then a cheaper US store where id rather just move my profile to and use going forward. Will probably end changing to a new US profile and use that going forward and just let my Irish one expire next year and lose out on my content, I probably wont care as much when the PS5 comes out since i'll have less interest going back playing older games then.

Might be the best time to start a new US account so, get 7 day free trial with ea Access, download and install ufc 3 from it and get 20% discount off UFC 4.

Caught something absolutely class watching back the trailer. You start as a positive relationship with Colby and invite him to camp. You KO him in sparring. He tweets you should be cut as you couldn't last 2 rounds with him and then you can release the footage of the sparring ko on twitter. This leads to heated conference and a 'very high' hype fight. That was pretty cool.

Yeah, I noticed that, its the kind of thing I'm hoping happens off the back of it not being scripted - that your actions in camp and on social media can lead to potential fights but you don't have to take them. For example in the situation above you could already be training for an upcoming fight and then off the back of the camp with Colby have a fight with him lined up afterwards..but if you didn't KO him you would just have your fight that was scheduled and then continue on and find your next opponent as normal.

It would also be good if your actions of KO'ing him and the bad blood on social was something you could use later on, so maybe not fight him at the time but that bad blood remains and later on if he had moved up the rankings you could use your previous history with him to start some social media back and forth to try to build up a fight between you. Basically the freedom to engage with fighters when you want and not when the game wants or forces you to.

Yeah I have one that I have used to purchase a few games cheaper already, just haven't got a subscription for it and play the games on my Irish account. It works out fine for single player games or games where I am not going to buy any dlc that is locked to that account but might be time to just bite the bullet and move to it now.

So, knowing what we know so far, how are ye starting career? What division you choosing? What's your fighting base (i think we can choose 2 out of boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, bjj and a couple of others), what League are you starting in (i think it's a choice between amateur, wfa or DWCS).

Myself, i think I'll be going with a LW (jumping up to ww or down to fw means a nice choice of fights across 3 divisions. Definitely bjj background but as tempting as kickboxing or muay thai is, if it's like the last game, boxing will be the best choice for power, speed and chin. Then I'll be hoping to start amateur but not sure if backyard or kumite is part of career. If they are, will be picking backyard before moving into WFA and planning to stay there for a title run to help build up my fighter before moving to UFC. That's the plan in theory anyway.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,462 Mod ✭✭✭✭Axwell

Fighter base I plan to go BJJ and boxing..best combination of ground and stand up ways to finish the fight for me which I prefer to have..although the progression and learning moves might influence that more this time around and make you really have to focus on one of them to become any way proficient as a fighter. Probably go LW first time around for the same reasons as yourself.

For a true career experience I want and hope that you can start at the bottom and do backyard to WFA..win the title and defend it before being head hunted for a UFC contract and then move up the ranks there. It would at least mean a decent lenght to the career mode too hopefully and some variety.

Game informer article about career, nothing majorly new, says it's your choice to leak the sparring tape.

Also they mention you can do Dana White contender series where as in ufc 3, it was Dana White looking for a fight. Had me in stitches :pac:

Career mode seems amazing! Will probably go wrestler boxer maybe! Might try a submission specialist in a second playthrough. Only definite downside is not being able to see full cards, results of each fight and how it affects the overall rankings
Unfortunately, despite the simulation mechanics taking place, they aren't surfaced to you in a fight-by-fight capacity, so you'll have to keep your eyes on the movement in the rankings if you want to keep your finger on the pulse of what's happening in your division beyond your own career.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,904 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Career lead Raman Bassi replied to my question. So, backyard/kumite is not part of career mode. Everyone starts in the amateur message where Davis discovers you and brings you through it until you get an option to go wfa or dcws. Then in your 2nd career, you can pick a real fighter or caf and go straight to ufc if you choose.

That's a bit disappointing but in watching the other video about backyard I guess it makes sense since its standup only.

Watched some of the career video but didnt want to spoil it for myself too much - one bit that made me laugh was when he is doing the initial fight and he shouts "There's this thing where you clinch now"..made me facepalm..assume he means the clinch is different but the way he said it made him sound like a complete noob.

The fight styles stuff does look cool, first impressions are I like the way they have implemented it and will make it interesting. I'm sure as with everything some stuff will be OP but hopefully they make an effort this year to bring out relevant patches and updates to balance and improve things along the way.

I think between career and then the backyard brawl and blitz battles I can see myself getting enough value for money out of it. Blitz battles sounds like something I would spend a lot of time doing and the fact they rotate the rules etc should keep it fresh and keep it interesting. I am interested though to see how using the new controls vs classic works out and if it's balanced or you are matched accordingly. Looking forward to it a bit more the last few days, obviously some of it is just hype for a new MMA game and ill probably be back 2 weeks in moaning about how crap a lot of the new stuff is but its got potential at least the more content I see.

This looks so good, really like what they've done with almost everything so far not gonna lie. Career, caf/archetype system. New Star rating system is really really good imo

I'll probably go for one of the balanced builds, Top Dog the archetype that jumps out to me initially. I'd hate to be completely overmatched in any one area to be honest. Although it has v poor stamina, I do sometimes really enjoy conserving my stamina for later rounds and absolutely destroying someone them, and I rarely use overhands which is one of its top moves. Jabs and hooks all the way. :) Hopefully someone does a write up somewhere so we can easily compare.

Watched episode 1 of that career mode and a bit of episode 2 but I'm gonna try not to watch anymore so as not to spoil anything.

Can't wait for it to release now!

Contemplating going back to 3 to improve my ground game before release as it's more or less the same. I've always been dominated by high level grapplers which is annoying

Looking like this will be a fun game to play with the backyard mode and added stuff for career mode. The main thing for me will be I'm hoping the gameplay improves on the 3rd game. I'll hold out until people get early excess to this and the reviews start coming online.

Don't go on the Reddit for this game if you're in any way looking forward to it, it's just full of people complaining about EA and the game, completely over the top

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,904 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

The majority of reddit want Yukes to make the next game and won't stop going on about undisputed 3 as if it was the holy grail of mma games (i personally enjoyed ea mma more than UD3).

Yeah, EA went a bit mad on the customisation side and i see more people spending real money on that stuff than they ever did with ultimate team. On the whole, I'm looking forward to it, it looks fun.

They're overstating the whole customization thing. Yeah it's not for everyone, includng me, but who cares, it's only cosmetic.

Emotes are getting hate due to the type of people perceived to play Fortnite, but all they are is taunts, which should definitely be in the game unless I'm missing something?

They could've done more to improve the ground game, but in fairness they had put so much work into it in the series already, they couldn't just overhaul it all.

I think it's a thing where everyone loves to bash EA for anything they do and choose to overlook the positives. It's completely deserved for the monetization of lootboxes like FIFA UT and neglecting any other game mode and 2K are the same with NBA 2K, but if they make lots of money from cosmetic things then maybe they can move away from lootboxes. Hopefully legislation comes in to ban them eventually.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,904 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

2k are way worse imo but it's cool to hate ea so 2k get a pass.

I noticed as well this is just called UFC 4, not EA UFC 4 or EA Sports UFC 4. I wonder why they changed that. Surely not trying to hide the EA part to get more sales?

Also, the archetype video i posted from Bayliun earlier is a bit misleading. His character creating in career video looked different so i scoured online and found this.

When you start career, you choose between boxer, kickboxer, balanced, wrestling and bjj. Each has base stats and 1 perk.

According to Bayliun, when you pick your caf for online ranked, only the look carries over and you have to select 1 of 12 archetypes and your rating will never be over 3.5 star so basically you can't use your fighter from career. If this is actually true, very few people are going to use caf online. I was wondering why the boxer snipee had 2 kicking perks but this was just to round them out for online play.

Haven't noticed that - it's the same naming conversion the others were anywhere I have seen unless I am missing something?
    https://www.ea.com/en-gb/games/ufc

The customisation stuff doesnt really bother me, when playing online modes that's where people want to show off their caf's etc and it's purely cosmetic so if people want to waste money on it let them at it but I probably would prefer if they just had one online mode where you could caf's and then keep the rest with normal fighters for realism. For example just have an online world championship for any fighters and then a seperate one called something else and the blitz battles as rostered fighters.

Its all for show to look like something new..dynamic rankings were in UF3. DC won't be doing anything I bet, stats will go up and down like before and DC will tweet whatever he is told to say. He's not even doing it after every PPV, he said select ones. So I imagine every now and then he's gonna tweet saying he made some big changes after this weekends PPV to the rankings..and then they will barely change.

This guy has the best career videos hands down. I'm trying not to watch much, just skim through but he's paying on legendary and the fights are really interesting. Actually looks like you can play a journeyman career on legendary if you forget about the GOAT goal and it looks really interesting.

PSA: if you play on legendary, there are no retries including training. He had 80k and spent 75k on inviting Lauzon to camp to learn the kimura from FG/Side Control. To learn the move, he had to finish the fight with kimura. He had it locked in and saw the prompt to chain the submission. Switched to armbar and finished the fight. Didn't learn the move, didn't get his 75k back and didn't get to retry it. Sickner.

I'm really liking the look of career mode. Think the first will be on normal to take the DWCS, get into ufc early and become goat and 2nd career will be legendary with the goal of becoming wfa champ, anything beyond that being a bonus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,904 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

That guy Bayliun has a new vid up and even if you don't want to see career stuff, skip to his 2nd fight against Joe Duffy, cracking scrap. I remember Legendary difficulty last year was awful cheesy as the AI blocked everything but this looks like a proper fight.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,462 Mod ✭✭✭✭Axwell

Had a quick shuffle through those 2 videos, looks pretty decent. That submission chain thing was a sickner alright, very frustrating and as he says it makes sense but your instinct is to hit it during the move.

I haven't been watching too many videos or reading too much about it, I had decided I am gonna pick it up so I don't want stuff putting me off getting it now :D

Looking forward to playing it and while I plan to sit down and properly play through the career and take my time with it and learn the new controls etc I know well that 45 mins in I will be jumping online wanting to throw fists against randomers with no idea how to properly clinch or escape with the new controls and swinging for the fences :pac:

On Operation Sports forum, the EA Game Changers said they all opposed the customisation aspect (1 guy got released from the program for opposing too much apparently) but seems like EA didn't take much stock of them this time around except for one "very, very big decision" that they were all against and EA took it out. Dev stepped in to remind they are under NDA and can't talk about it but the GC's said that if the feature was still in, the game would be far far worse and no one would care about customisation, that's how bad it was.

Interested now to know what that was :)

Saw in mmagame's last video that there was no 'emote off' at the start of the fight and didn't look edited out. A new patch was released this morning so maybe they took it out.

I'm loving this series. Would be selling me the game above all else if i didn't have it preordered.

The only reason i wouldn't start in legendary is that it looks too hard to upgrade your fighter. Sparring shouldn't have legendary difficulty to a point where it's too hard to earn moves. Other than that, the actual fights are incredible and look like a different game than the other YouTubers spamming punch until KO.

Full roster revealed here. Some ommissions, some bad models, some great models. Overall, I'm happy with it and the new star system. Only 4 fighters with 5 stars (Jones, Khabib, Nunes & Izzy) and the majority are either 4 or 4.5 stars making them more tempting to use. I have a feeling 5 star fighters won't be allowed in the Boards Tourney, who wants to fight Marty using Khabib :pac:
