I really can't see how people are into a game so much as to invest these kind if figures, when it's not even fully made yet. It's kinda gotten me scared of the game now... I feel like there's something about it I'm not understanding here.

    To quote my favourite movie...
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

Everyone who has put money into it just hopes it can be exactly what is sounds like. A massive, AAA space game with all the bells and whistles added on. We've not seen anything like this in a long time, so we hope it lives up to expectations. If it works, it could be amazing.

Too expensive? what a cheap ass you are! 145€ is nothing for a game that isn't out yet, sure aren't you supporting the developers, might as well get a founders packs for 50€ to buy the game too. in my opinion i think everyone should give a months salary for Mr Roberts for being such a visionary

If this was another wing commander game then I'd be all over it. Might check it out when it's on a steam sale.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,213 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

$31 million! That's bloody insane. Is it ever going to stop? If it's not the best game ever made, a hell of a lot of people will be disappointed.

I do think they should stop added stretch goals now, and just focus on getting the game out. Any word on if the dogfighting module is still on schedule for December? I really hope they give us some proper news in today's 4 hour livestream.

Idris for sale, limited number $1250

    Banu Merchantman $250

    X'ian Scout $150

    Interesting....

    such cheap. Many deals. Wow.

Haha. Just had a peek there, the idris is already sold out.
Man people sure are hyped up over this game, it's mental.

    Star Citizen team will be hosting a 4 hour livestream starting at 7pm tonight;
    http://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/13396-Star-Citizen-Anniversary-Livestream-Sale

    Almost $32 million now!
These ship sales really have people digging deep in their pockets,
but I'm actually going to step back from getting one, they have plenty of money!
    The only thing that grabs me atm are one of these huge Star Citizen mouse-mats @ €28;

looks like they'll hit the 32million target within the hour too, i checked earlier today (an hour ago) and it was 31.6m it's at 31.9 now.

That's some serious spending going on there :)

Was tempted to buy the Starfarer yday or the Banu today, but too close to Christmas :(

Would anyone spend the 1250 on a Idris if you could?

    funny thing is
when the game is released I'd give it 6months at the minimum before someone who has not bought anything bar the game itself to catch up to people who spent over a thousand quid buying in game ships

I could of sworn I've seen some people in this thread who have done that complain about micro transactions when this is probably the most expensive micro transactions I've ever seen:pac: still the game does look great but I can see some people will be let down over the amount of money they put into a game not even made yet that turns out too be a big letdown
hopefully it won't be, wonder if my pc can handle it :D

I'm just going to buy the lowest pledge, so i get the game. I'd much rather earn the ships in game then just have them sitting there on day 1.

I've found my perfect balance of ships (and made some profit off selling LTI Bombers early on)
    Retaliator
    Constellation
    Super Hornet

Not saying i'm not tempted by the Hornet however...looks sweet. Just don't fancy spending $110 on the basic version.

    Good live-stream, I enjoyed it.
Now Chris is off to write another stretch-goal "Letter from the Chairman",
the day after his last one.
That's almost €2 million made in one day!

Honestly, I think I'll enjoy starting Star Citizen with just my Aurora... and a map, lol.
Out of all the games I've played & enjoyed, from Frontier:Elite to Minecraft to X3:Albion Prelude (which I'm playing right now),
there's a lot of fun and appreciation to be had with starting from zero and building up an Empire. :)

Not to mention the dev team have to keep making slightly better ships every few months to ensure the cash cow is fed :)

The one thing i hope they do well is to allow for a good sense of exploration. I love the idea of just being able to pick a direction, and try find random events or anomalies to scan/investigate. I'm all for combat, but i definitely don't want to just do that.

    Also, scavenging.

I think that was the biggest livestream pledge drive yet even bigger than the 24 hour long ones but it was the end of LTI sale too.

Seems the big ships (Connie, etc) will not be available for dog fighting,

only the small fighers (aurora, avenger, hornet, etc)

Wonder would you use the P52-Snub?

Why on Earth would they? They've gone to all of this effort creating a cult around a game that doesn't exist yet, and it seems like they can farm it for more cash than most fully-fledged games could ever hope to make - why on Earth would they stop? They can likely make more money stoking the hype flames and letting people pay for how awesome they imagine it will be, than they could with a real game they have to release.

People's insane desires for computer game spaceships are paying their mortgages and sending their kids to college. You can bet they are paying themselves massive salaries out of the pledge money.

At this point we'll mostly see smaller jumps. New ships etc and physical items will be the things to raise the pledge drive now.

    probably weapon ungrades for dogfighting

    Weapons for firing range

    The Origin 890i

And couple of odd ships like Frigate.

Are they planning on selling weapon upgrades? Cause that sounds like it would give people a massive advantage. Pretty much the definition of P2W.

Weapon upgrades are possible but only with UEE credits.

Do not think you can use real cash to buy them.

From what was said in the broadcasts and forum, those 'voyager' store items will be very limited and mostly used for cosmetics.

When the game actually kicks off the currency will change somewhat, between SC credits and UEE earned credits.

You could go for the entry level completionist package, only $15k. ;)

    actually those are sold out!

You'll have to settle with a measly wing commander package for $10k

No, I'd want Alpha/Beta access if I gave it any money upfront. It's gotten past the point where I'd give it cash just to see the game made (I'm convinced it'll see release now even if no one else gave a penny).

Well, they even said themselves the amount of funding they got is more than they could have imagined.
So, it's basically a given that the game will be finished, but it's another question whether it's actually going to be good or not.
The instancing and the microtransaction stuff has me a bit unsure.

I don't mind microtransactions hugely so long as I don't feel like I'm a cow to be milked (e.g. World of Tanks' stock grinds where without paying real money you face 100+ games in a very, very weak tank in order to get something playable). I'm ok with time vs money, e.g. if you have money but not time you can reduce the grind but if you have no money or don't want to pay you can just grind it out and have the same top end equipment. What I dislike is when they make the game experience deliberately unpleasant unless you hand over money as opposed to simply a time sink.

Cosmetic stuff like Paradox does for its grand strategy games is always welcome I think. Totally optional but gives the developer a bit more cash with which to make more games with.

So whats the bottom line on this, pay to win model?

Absolutely sick of them to be fair, it's a ****e model that just waters down skill and enjoyment. Not wasting a penny if its a case someone with zero skill and a bit of cash can just insta buy powerful stuff

The first thing that makes me think no is that they're giving private servers out from the start or near start. If you're building a P2W F2P game this is not how you do it (easier to encourage people to dip into the wallet when it comes to "catching up," private servers just allow groups to progress along at their own pace without having to worry about wallet warriors etc).

Time will tell though as usual.

    *shrugs*

in a lot of ways im glad i picked to back Elite dangerous over star citizen.
Although this has already lead to a good few arguments with people akin to the xbox ps4 fanboy arguments, one quite funny argument i had over the 2 games was with a guy who swore bling Elite was a rip off of star citizen :D
yes star citizen has sourced stupid ammounts of money and is a right cash cow but Elite is doing alright and has just that bit more history behind it.
its also got the edge over the 2 games imo.

jingles if you know of him has recently given Elite a bit of coverage
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X88vvPDpVc
can already see the spam war though in the comments though.
vid is worth watching to the end as jingles puts a good argument across abotu the game

Ostensibly it does seem pay-to-win, but the only thing I'd say about that is everything in the game will be obtainable without spending real money (beyond purchasing the game). However if it takes 10 years of playing 8 hours a day that obviously isn't much good.

Yeah, balance is very important in this. In Mechwarrior Online you can with real money buy premium mechs (only available for money) and regular mechs (available also for in-game money). It's not considered to be that big a deal by most people because whilst the premium mechs are usually good they're not automatic picks over regular mechs for competitive play or if you were picking them for effectiveness. Normally the only reason someone is in a premium mech is for the +30% ingame currency generation and that's it really, people would really prefer to be able to buy some kind of module which gave this benefit and put it into a regular mech of their choosing generally speaking.

Time vs Money is fine, so long as the grind isn't too long without putting in some money (something that is very hard to balance in F2P games, WarThunder are still messing about quite a lot with their economy to try and balance xp vs cash gains, so is MechWarrior and even old stalwarts like World of Tanks are tweaking the balance to get the desired mix of fast enough to not drive way the free player base that keep the game servers full and busy but slow enough to encourage people with free cash to spend a little).

The dogfighting module has been pushed back. Probably not surprising, and i'm ok with it if it means releasing a more polished product.

However, I do think they need to get more actual game content out, and actually show us more of what they are doing. At this stage, we should have seen more of the actual work that's going on with the game itself, rather than just seeing new ships and features being added. Hopefully they don't continue to miss their targets, and actually get something of note completed soon.
"I feel that the Dogfighting module, especially with Star Citizen’s greatly increased profile, needs to be more polished than a typical 'alpha'," writes Roberts in his lengthy update. "There are a lot of eyes on the game, and more than a few people wanting us to fail. Because Dogfighting is the first module that will involve significant gameplay, it has to be good – I don’t feel that we will get a pass just because it is pre-pre alpha.

"So we had two choices: either fork development and spend time building something that would involve throwing away work in order to meet the December deadline and deliver something that wouldn’t have the level of polish I’m happy with, or stay on course to build something that would lead directly into the finished game."
