Other thread was 8 months + old, so for those that have no idea what this is or perhaps a better word is "will be", it's going to be a giant space simulator persistent one server trading/economic game. Think Eve Online from the cockpit view but much more detailed than that description does it justice.

After you watch all the below I'd be interested to know if anyone is considering joining the pledge army or already have!

Promotional Squadron 42 video (basically the single player side)

From that same cinematic with have Chris Roberts (founder/creator) doing a in game fly around with one of the fighters basically showing that it's really not just cinematic.

    Main Site - https://robertsspaceindustries.com/
    Wiki - http://starcitizen.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

There is a mountain of material on the main site in their comm-link, there are forums which are a little hard to follow and the Chat which actually has some pretty helpful people in there.

    - My Part / Opinion -
So I saw this start of June 2013 and was like "meh" but seeing more of it made me turn from meh to fanatical about every update and thread I managed to grab myself a Rear Admiral package with the LTI (Life Time Insurance) which has turned into something very coveted. Even though this isn't available anymore I would recommend if you have 30-40e lying around to drop it into this game if it's your thing as community support is simply mind-boggling. Of course if you have more dosh around then there are more pricier pledges with better benefits but that's up to you.

They've hit the 14 million mark and very soon be at 15 million (320k as of this posting).

I'm joining the game with a load of old Eve Online mates and we'll probably form so sort of squadron but still in discussion.

Other great videos on the topic -

Been following it since it was announced, and if it comes off as good as it sounds, it's pretty much going to be the best thing ever. Amazing in scope, but we'll see how much of it actually becomes a reality. Would definitely love to see some more gameplay, though i know it's still early enough days yet.

One thing i'm not so fond of, but understand, if giving players pretty advanced looking ships for backing the game. Will give people a pretty big advantage when it starts up.

    I'm a Star Citizen backer too. :)

It's gonna be a fantastic game going by progress I've witnessed this last 6 months.
It really is aiming to be a truly immersive space sim experience,
and with Chris Roberts & the team I believe they can achieve it.

Btw, there was lots of great reveals in the 24-hour live-steam a few weeks ago.
Did anyone stay up for it?
I did, except for a few hours I crashed out, lol, it was chaotic at times but fun to watch.

The Constellation reveal at the end of the live-stream is a great example of
    just how much work has been done already;

    Amazing progress.:D

Sounds interesting. Can't afford to back it now. But, might do next month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,455 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

Yeah, I backed it back when it was announced. If they pull it off, fantastic it will be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,929 ✭✭✭✭ShadowHearth

They are trying to do EVE online on Steroids in one go. Sorry, but I am a bit skeptical.

It sounds great on paper, but I doubt they will be able to pull it off with no cuts to content or mechanics. EVE online is huge now and it took years and years to get there. Thing is EVE online is not even near what this game promises to deliver.

I am all up for such game, but I will wait and see, before giving my money to them.

No, it won't be like Eve Online at all, lol, thank heavens!

Star Citizen will be a twitch-based combat space sim, think Star Wars.
It's basically going to be a 21st century combination of Wing Commander (Single player, missions, linear progression etc)
and Privateer (Open-world, Multiplayer, pirate, trade, scavenge... do whatever you like) game.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,649 ✭✭✭Not The Real Scarecrow

This hasn't been on my radar at all but after looking at the vids and reading up on it, it's definitely something I'll be picking up.Think I'll be waiting closer to the beta , to get it.

I am not sure how they will make this mmorpg/single player work. Are they talking about sub too?

From the wiki, it looks like they're going with a guild wars model, as in pay for the game and no subs. People will also be able to host private servers, so I don't think its going to be like EVE with just one persistent world on one server. At least that's what I've read so far, could be wrong.

So some people say one big world, some say private server based. I am a bit confused.

Most likely it might be something like DayZ so?

There will be one official universe, one shard or whatever you want to call it but private servers will be possible.

Backed this osme time ago by buying 2 ships, looking forward to it but it does sound like Chris Roberts is promising a lot, I got hints of Molyneux while reading/listening to some of the stuff he's been saying.

    I'm cautiously optimistic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,012 ✭✭✭BizzyC

Bought in ages ago on this, cant remember how much exactly, think it was the 2nd tier level, so a slightly better than starter ship.

    Should be interesting.

WooHoo, Star Citizen has just passed $15,000,000 ! :)
    http://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/13159-15-Million

That means it has raised a $1 million in one month, without any kind of promotion, that's pretty cool.
Every backer will also get a free digital 42-page Upgrade Handbook manual
with their game which goes through the process of customizing and overclocking ship systems!

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 23,282 Mod ✭✭✭✭Kiith

That's a pretty crazy amount of money for a community backed game.

Star Citizen hangar module is now released :)
    http://robertsspaceindustries.com/hangar-module

Download speeds are a low but steady 1-2 MB/sec atm.
    Hangar Module minimum system requirements are;
    • Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
    • DirectX 11 graphics card with 1GB Video RAM
    • Quad core CPU
    • 8GB Memory
If you can't log in, just keep trying, it took me a few attempts.
This is pre-pre alpha so lots of derpy things happening that I am sure will be ironed out in time.
Also the Xbox 360 controller works fairly well.

    Here's a screen cap from my hangar;

    I bought the Hornet too

Going to use it as my escort for missions with the Constellation.
May invest in a Cutlass or 325A at later date.

    My Handle is 'The_Valeyard'

Which should think about forming a guild / team / etc.

You have a Starfarer!!!! Lucky man!!!

I shall invest in an Idris- P at some stage!!!

Think this is correct. The 'Digital Bounty Hunter' pack gives you access to alpha and Beta, do not think 'Digital Scout' gives you that option.

Raised another 500k in a week, some 179k in a day after a new (previously available) ship was made available on the pledge store again.

    I'm a backer.

I don't know why, I wasn't a fan of the wing commander games and I wasn't a fan of freelancer. Chris Roberts has passion and a little bit of an ego to match which meh, I don't love or loathe it. In my opinion this game is going to hit big or bomb spectacularly. I wouldn't wish a ****ty game on anyone so I hope he takes my little bit of money and does well with it.

The forums and chat seem to be a nice community, I hope that continues.

WhooHoo, Star Citizen just reached $20,000,000
Fantastic achievement for all you space sims fans out there. :D

Yes, I resisted, I was tempted..... but I think it'll be more fun to earn them in-game anyway.
However, I am tempted to upgrade to the business hangar though for €16.
I find the starting hangar is way too dark.

I got the Deluxe Hanger with my Connie, very happy with that ship :)

Will be honest though, if the Starfarer comes on sale again or gladiator, I feel my wallet may empty

Live Stream next Thursday (night for us around 11pm) for an hour and a half to celebrate the anniversary. 10/10

Possible sales/new ship brochures etc. Almost at the 21 mil mark also!

New Wingman's Hangar from yesterday also -

yes, my wallet is going to suffer next weekend :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,242 ✭✭✭Moon54

Yeah, going to be a lot of fun :)

    Some ship sales would nice.
I'm considering getting the Freelancer atm as it's a exploration/transport type ship.

    Miscfreelancer.jpg

Also, as an added plus, it would bump me up to Business hangar if I got that.
So a Freelancer sale is what I'm hoping for!

How much are people spending on this? Some of the ships are well into the hundreds of dollars. I spend $60 and I think I'm out of my mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,455 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

I think I got the option for about €35 back a while ago.

I assume you can buy other types of craft in game, simlar to X3?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,242 ✭✭✭Moon54

I'm about the same, I got the starter Aurora, digital map and something else, that was about 8 months ago.

With funding at nearly $21 million now, Star Citizen is pretty well funded, but I'm thinking long-term with this game.
It's just I'm growing tired of the cookie-cutter game-play from new release games these days.

@Dave, yes everything will be available for purchase with earned in-game UEC credits,
so it's not really necessary to get extra ships or items now.
Any extra funding is just going to hopefully help the devs to make it an even better game.

Search the galaxy for a host of valuable and interesting secrets using both the flight and FPS components. Discover the secrets of the ancient Hadesians, locate valuable components and cargo… or go down in history the first to make contact an entirely new alien race!"

Cool stuff, this really suits my play-style!
